Excerpt: Leiden University Library (Leiden, The Netherlands) is a library founded in 1575 in Leiden, the Netherlands. It is regarded as a significant place in the development of European culture: it is a part of a small number of cultural centres that gave direction to the development and spread of knowledge during the Enlightenment. This was due particularly to the simultaneous presence of a unique collection of exceptional sources and scholars. Holdings include approximately 3 500 000 volumes, 1 000 000 e-books, 20 000 current serials, 30 000 e-journals, 60 000 Oriental and Western manuscripts, 450 000 letters, 70 000 maps, 100 000 prints, 12 000 drawings and 120 000 photographs. “Est hic magna commoditas bibliothecae ut studiosi possint studere”Josephus Justus Scaliger”The greatest advantage of the library is that those who want to study, can study.” William I, Prince of Orange, main leader of the Dutch revolt against the Spanish, founder of Leiden University, donated the first book to the library, a copy of the Polyglot Bible. Copy of a painting by Antonio Moro, dating from 1555. Chapters: 1764 Novels, Dictionnaire Philosophique, Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime, the Castle of Otranto, Quaker Bible, 1764 in Literature, Dei Delitti E Delle Pene, New Essays on Human Understanding. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Dictionnaire philosophique (Philosophical Dictionary) is an encyclopedic dictionary published by Voltaire in 1764. The alphabetically-arranged articles often criticize the Roman Catholic Church and other institutions. The first edition, released in June of 1764, went by the name of Dictionnaire Philosphique Portatif. It was 344 pages and consisted of 73 articles. Later versions were expanded into two volumes consisting of 120 articles. The first editions were published anonymously in Geneva by Gabriel Grasset. Due to the volatile content of the Dictionnaire, Voltaire chose Grasset over his usual publisher to ensure his own anonymity. The Dictionnaire was a lifelong project for Voltaire. It represents the culmination of his views on Christianity, God, morality, and other subjects. The Enlightenment saw the creation of a new way of structuring information in books. The first work to employ this method was the Dictionnaire Historique et Critique (1697) by Pierre Bayle, in which the information is ordered in alphabetical order. Other important works using a similar structure followed, such as the Encyclopedie by Diderot and DAlembert. Having witnessed first hand the popularity and many advantages of this form, Voltaire used this information while preparing the Philosophical Dictionary in 1752, although it wasn’t completed until 1764. Having had the opportunity to write his Dictionary at a later point in time, Voltaire saw that there were certain problems with previous dictionaries, chiefly that they |

A Brilliant Deceit and Other Essays $14.19 A noted biblical scholar argues that the resurrection of Jesus was a hoax. In the first part of A Brilliant Deceit and Other Essays, author L.M. Barré offers fresh evidence to support a thesis put forward by the famous New Testament scholar Hermann Samuel Reimarus (1694-1768) that the disciples of Jesus perpetrated a resurrection hoax. That evidence is presented in a series of short essays that contain references to overlapping observations made by Reimarus. The second part of the book isolates socio-religious trajectories in ancient Israelite religion. Dr. Barré’s fundamental findings challenge the widespread notion that ancient Israel was a homogeneous culture united under the worship of the high god Yahweh Sabaoth. Instead, he argues that the Old Testament traditions are not the product of one people but two, originally and distinctly worshipping the high gods El and Yahweh. Author Biography: Dr. Barré received his doctorate in religion from Vanderbilt University in 1986. His writings have been published in such scholarly journals as the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, Vetus Testamentum, Zeitschrift für die alttestamentlische Wissenschaft, the Journal for the Study of the Old Testament, and the Mercer Dictionary of the Bible. Dr. Barré has taught at Vanderbilt University and at the Southern Methodist University. He recently received an editorial nomination for inclusion in the 56th edition of Who’s Who in America. |

In this concise yet thorough study, John Long answers the above questions, exploring the lives and deaths of John Wycliffe and William Tyndale and explaining their roles in translating the Latin Vulgate and the New Testament, respectively. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Textus Receptus (Latin: “received text”) is the name subsequently given to the succession of printed Greek texts of the New Testament which constituted the translation base for the original German Luther Bible, for the translation of the New Testament into English by William Tyndale, the King James Version, and for most other Reformation-era New Testament translations throughout Western and Central Europe. The series originated with the first printed Greek New Testament to be published; a work undertaken in Basel by the Dutch Catholic scholar and humanist Desiderius Erasmus in 1516, on the basis of some six manuscripts, containing between them not quite the whole of the New Testament. The lacking text was translated from Vulgate. Although based mainly on late manuscripts of the Byzantine text-type, Erasmus’s edition differed markedly from the classic form of that text. The Dutch humanist Erasmus had been working for years on two projects: a collation of Greek texts and a fresh Latin New Testament. In 1512, he began his work on a fresh Latin New Testament. He collected all the Vulgate manuscripts he could find to create a critical edition. Then he polished the Latin. He declared, “It is only fair that Paul should address the Romans in somewhat better Latin.” In the earlier phases |

Breaking the bread, sharing the wine: Religion as culture and community in the civic life of Filipino-Americans. $49.99 At nearly 2.5 million people and growing via native birth and immigration, Asian American Catholics are an important part of the demographic transformation of American Catholicism. Among the Asian groups making the greatest impact are Filipino-Americans who are the second largest Asian American population and represent the second largest source of Catholic immigration to the United States, second only to Mexico. Woefully understudied, little is known about Filipino-Americans and the ways in which Catholicism impacts their community. Drawing on ethnographic data collected in Houston, Texas as well as survey analysis of the Social Capital Community Benchmark survey, this study explores the dynamic relationship between religion and civic life among first-generation Filipino-Americans. Contrary to what may be anticipated from the social scientific literature on Asian American Catholics in general, Filipino-American Catholics participate in civic life to the same degree as Protestants, if not more. Although the Filipino-American community may currently face internal concerns that can detract from civic participation, religion plays an important role in overcoming these obstacles and mobilizing active civic lives. Focusing on four sets of extensive religious resources: (1) religious institutions, specifically the Catholic Church, (2) involvement in church through active weekly attendance, (3) involvement in church through other activities not associated with regular attendance such as Bible studies, and (4) involvement in religious groups such Couples for Christ and Palitaw that are not affiliated with a church, the findings of this study point to Catholicism as a dynamic and vibrant faith that bridges the spaces between culture, home, and civil society. It also highlights the more intimate and intensive resources found in these home devotional and prayer groups that inform and shape not only how Filipino-Americans define community but build it and engage it in the |

The fall is taught a dogma that has elements that are incompatible – and often – with Catholic dogma. Also, if you talk about a hard core of Baptist studies the Bible, are likely to be flat-out hostile to the Catholic dogma. Is what you want in a Bible study, as a Catholic? Hope not.
