Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Summa Theologica (Latin: “Summary of Theology” or “Highest Theology”) or the Summa Theologiæ or simply the Summa, written 12651274) is the most famous work of Thomas Aquinas (c. 12251274), although it was never finished. It was intended as a manual for beginners as a compilation of all of the main theological teachings of the time. It summarizes the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West, which, before the Protestant Reformation, subsisted solely in the Roman Catholic Church. The Summa’s topics follow a cycle: the existence of God; God’s creation, Man; Man’s purpose; Christ; the Sacraments; and back to God. It is famous for its five arguments for the existence of God, the Quinquae viae (Latin: five ways). Throughout his work, Aquinas cites Augustine of Hippo, Aristotle, and other Christian, Jewish, Muslim and ancient pagan scholars. The Summa Theologica is a more mature and structured version of Aquinas’s earlier Summa contra Gentiles. This earlier work was more apologetic, each article refuting a belief of a heresy. The Summa is composed of three major parts, each of which deals with a major subsection of Christian theology. Each part contains several questions, each of which revolves around a more specific subtopic; one such question being “Of Christ’s Manner of Life.” Each question contains several articles, which are phrased as interrogative statements dealing with specific issues, such as “Whether Christ should have led a life of poverty in this world?” The Summa has a standard format for handling each article. This method of exposition is derived from Averroes, to whom Aquinas refers respectfully as “the Commentator.” The Summa makes many references to certain

Excerpt: The Fourth Crusade, begun by Innocent III in 1202, intended to retake the Holy Land but was soon subverted by Venetians who used the forces to sack the Christian city of Zara. Innocent excommunicated the Venetians and crusaders. Eventually the crusaders arrived in Constantinople, but due to strife which arose between them and the Byzantines, rather than proceed to the Holy Land the crusaders instead sacked Constantinople and other parts of Asia Minor effectively establishing the Latin Empire of Constantinople in Greece and Asia Minor. This was effectively the last crusade sponsored by the papacy; later crusades were sponsored by individuals. Thus, though Jerusalem was held for nearly a century and other strongholds in the Near East would remain in Christian possession much longer, the crusades in the Holy Land ultimately failed to establish permanent Christian kingdoms. Islamic expansion into Europe would renew and remain a threat for centuries culminating in the campaigns of Suleiman the Magnificent in the sixteenth century. On the other hand, the crusades in southern Spain, southern Italy, and Sicily eventually lead to the demise of Islamic power in the regions; the Teutonic knights expanded Christian domains in Eastern Europe, and the much less frequent crusades within Christendom, such as the Albigensian Crusade, achieved their goal of maintaining doctrinal unity. The final breach is often considered to have arisen after the capture and sacking of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade in 1204. Crusades against Christians in the East by Roman Catholic crusaders was not exclusive to the Mediterranean though (see also the Northern Crusades and the Battle of the Ice). The sacking of Constantinople and the Church of Holy Wisdom and establishm… More:

Headmaster, Stephen Davidson is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC). The school was founded in 1548 and granted its Charter by King Charles II in 1662. Pupils are selected by examination, however many teachers have noted the standard of pupils within the school slipping, as in a bid to maximise their balance sheet, the school has loosened the previous stringent requirements .The school motto is Latin : Hoc Age (Do This ).Current senior school fees are around £11,900 per annum and some bursaries are available to help with fees, however no performance based scholarships are available. This has implications for intelligent pupils choosing their school, as at many equivalent private schools scholarships to such intelligent pupils are offered .The school grounds have been used as a helicopter landing ground by the royal family when they are visiting the local area due to its large fields. The most recent landing was by the Princess Royal and Prince Charles has also landed at the school.Education In 2007, the pass rate for GCSE (Grades A* – C) was 97 %, which was equalled by the A-Level students. 31 courses are offered for A-Levels, and 97 % of sixth-form

Excerpt: Decet Romanum Pontificem (English : It Pleases the Roman Pontiff ) (1521) is the papal bull excommunicating Martin Luther , bearing the title of the first three Latin words of the text . It was issued on January 3, 1521, by Pope Leo X to effect the excommunication threatened in his earlier papal bull Exsurge Domine (1520) since Luther failed to recant . Luther had burned his copy of Exsurge Domine on December 10, 1520, at the Elster Gate in Wittenberg , indicating his response to it.There are at least two other important papal bulls with the title Decet Romanum Pontificem : one dated February 23, 1596, issued by Pope Clement VIII , and one dated March 12, 1622, issued by Pope Gregory XV .Toward the end of the 20th century, Lutherans in dialogue with the Catholic Church requested the lifting of this excommunication ; however, the Vatican’s response was that its practice is to lift excommunications only on those still living. Roland Bainton in “Here I Stand after a Quarter of a Century,” his preface for the 1978 edition of his Luther biography, concludes: “I am happy that the Church of Rome has allowed some talk of removing the excommunication of Luther. This might well be done. He was never a heretic. He might better be called, as one has phrased it, ‘a reluctant rebel.’” Luther’s rehabilitation has been denied however by the Vatican, “Rumors that the Vatican is set to rehabilitate Martin Luther, the 16th-century leader of the Protestant Reformation, are groundless,” said the Vatican spokesman, Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi.Notes References (URLs online) Websites (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Doutrina Christam em Lingoa Bramana Canarim (Christian Doctrines in the Canarese Brahmin Language, Konkani : Dovtri , English

Excerpt: Anastasius Bibliothecarius (c. 810-c. 878) was Head of archives (bibliothecarius, literally “librarian”) and antipope of the Roman Catholic Church. He was a nephew of Bishop Arsenius of Orte, who executed important commissions as Papal legate. Anastasius learned the Greek language from Eastern Roman monks and obtained an unusual education for his era, such that he appears to be the most learned ecclesiastic of Rome in the barbaric period of the 9th century. During the pontificate of pope Nicholas I (855-867) Anastasius was abbot of Santa Maria in Trastevere on the farther side of the Tiber. Among other matters, he was employed by the pope as secretary and he has been shown by Ernst Perels to be the ‘ghost-writer’ behind much papal official correspondence of these years. He was also active as an author, and translated Greek language works into Latin. Among them was the biography of St. John the Merciful, which he dedicated to Nicholas I. The successor of Nicholas, Pope Adrian II (867-872), appointed Anastasius bibliothecarius (Head of archives) of the Roman Church, an important office at the Lateran Palace that gave him further influence at the papal Court. In 869 he was sent by Louis II, Holy Roman Emperor as envoy to Constantinople, with two men of high rank in the Frankish Empire, to negotiate a marriage between Leo VI the Wise, oldest son of the Byzantine emperor Basil I, and Louis’s only child, Ermengard. When the envoys arrived at Constantinople, the Fourth Council of Constantinople was still in session, and Anastasius, who atte… More:

William Tyndale (sometimes spelled Tindall or Tyndall; pronounced /ˈtɪndəl/) (c. 1494 – 1536) was a 16th-century Protestant reformer and scholar who, influenced by the work of Desiderius Erasmus and Martin Luther, translated considerable parts of the Bible into the Early Modern English of his day. While a number of partial and complete Old English translations had been made from the seventh century onward, and Middle English translations particularly during the 14th century, Tyndale’s was the first English translation to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, and the first to take advantage of the new medium of print, which allowed for its wide distribution. In 1535, Tyndale was arrested, jailed in the castle of Vilvoorde outside Brussels for over a year, tried for heresy and burned at the stake. He was strangled before his body was burnt by some people who associated themselves with the Roman Catholic Church.Much of Tyndale’s work eventually found its way into the King James Version (or “Authorised Version”) of the Bible, published in 1611, which, as the work of 54 independent scholars revising the existing English versions, drew significantly on Tyndale’s translations. The King James Version New Testament is 83.7 per cent Tyndale’s work, with the KJV Old Testament 75.7 per cent Tyndale’s.Whereas John Wycliffe had earlier produced an English translation of the Bible from Latin, Tyndale was the first to translate from the original Greek language. This was only made possible after Erasmus made the Greek New Testament available in Europe.

 A Kindly Providence

A Kindly Providence

$16.95

This comprehensive and illustrated volume is both a rich history of the Catholic Church in Alaska, and the autobiography of Fr. Louis Renner, S.J., who was a dedicated missionary in Alaska for 40 years. He tells here a compelling story of a full and fascinating life in service of the people and the Church of Alaska amid the incredible natural beauties, challenging elements and vast regions of the Great Land. Beautifully interweaving the history of the people and Church in Alaska, Fr. Renner tells his story of a dedicated missionary priest who loved the people he served. A scholar, a teacher, and always a Jesuit priest, he taught German and Latin at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, edited the Catholic newsletter The Alaskan Shepherd, and ran missions at two different Indian villages on the Yukon River. This pastoral priest became a friend to people in all sectors of Alaskan society. Tony Knows, the governor of Alaska, even presented him with the “Governor’s Award for Friend of the Humanities”. The outline of Fr. Renner’s life is fleshed-out richly in A Kindly Providence. One reviewer writes that “all is there, a clear picture of his life.
