When the other kids find out he’s Jewish–a fact he’s been hiding–his fortunes and relationships instantly change. The Education of Catholic Girls (Paperback)

The Education of Catholic Girls (Paperback)

$32.58

A century after its first publication, Mother Janet Erskine Stuart s classic The Education of Catholic Girls is back, and it s as relevant and useful as ever! Practical as it is pious, witty as it is wise, this collection of counsels not only helps educators in school or at home meet Catholic girls special intellectual needs, it offers sage strategies for whole-person formation: showing us how to help our girls grow into virtuous Catholic women.Catholic girls among other girls, writes Mother Stuart, and Catholic women among other women, have the privilege as well as the duty of upholding what is highest. The Education of Catholic Girls will help you teach your girls whether through math and science, needlework, Catholic philosophy, or good manners to uphold what is highest; it will help you train them to live a perfectly honorable and fearless life. This centenary edition of The Education of Catholic Girls features English translations of the original s foreign phrases and quoted sources (Mother Stuart s presumption about her readers knowledge of Latin, French, and German points to something education has lost over the years), as well as a new preface by Catholic homeschooling author and speaker Susie Lloyd.

I was born the youngest of three children in 1973 to a diverse heritage. My mother is Mexican-Hungarian and my father is full blooded Italian, so emotions ran high in my household. My parents divorced when I was four years old, and although I lived primarily with my father and two siblings in Yonkers, New York, I also spent much of my time in the Berkshires with my mother. I went to a small private Catholic high school for girls in Manhattan called Notre Dame, and it was there that I discovered my love of poetry. Writing became a way for me to express myself. I went on to Syracuse University in 1991 with the intentions of becoming a writer, but found my love of teaching instead. I became a special education teacher and settled in the Berkshires after college with my husband. My daughter, Emma, was born in 1999 and she is my everything. Since that time I have been divorced, and I had to learn how to truly survive on my own and take care of my little girl. It was a scary and extremely emotional time in my life, but it has helped me become the person I am today. Through it all I have turned to writing as my solace, and I am sure that will continue with each new experience. I have also had the good fortune to find my soul mate. Our road has not been an easy one, but we seem to complete and complement each other in a way I did not think possible. Many of my poems were written to him. Somehow, we have made it through the hard times, and after much hurt and healing we are getting married in December.

Being Catholic Now: Prominent Americans Talk About Change in the Church and the Quest for Meaning

Being Catholic Now: Prominent Americans Talk About Change in the Church and the Quest for Meaning

$1.99

For Kerry Kennedy, who grew up in a devoutly Catholic household coping with great loss, her family’s faith was a constant source of strength and solace. As an adult, she came to question some of the attitudes and teachings of the Catholic Church while remaining an impassioned believer in its role as a defender of the poor and oppressed.“Generations ago,” says Kennedy, “the search for spirituality came predefined and prepackaged. [The Church] not only gave us all the answers, it even gave us the questions to ask.” Now many of the old certainties are being reexamined. In an attempt to convey this sea change, Kennedy asked thirty-seven American Catholics to speak candidly about their own faith—whether lost, recovered, or deepened—and about their feelings regarding the way the Church hierarchy is moving forward. The voices included here range from respectful to reproachful and from appreciative to angry. Speaking their minds are businesspeople, actors and entertainers, educators, journalists, politicians, union leaders, nuns, priests—even a cardinal. Some love the Church; some feel intensely that the Church wronged them. All have an illuminating insight or perspective.Kerry Kennedy herself speaks of the joy of growing up as one of Robert and Ethel Kennedy’s eleven children, of the tragedies that eventually befell her family, and of how religion was deeply woven through good times and bad. Journalist Andrew Sullivan talks about reconciling his devout Catholicism with the Church’s condemnation of his identity as a gay man. TV newswoman Cokie Roberts recalls the nuns who taught her and “took girls seriously when nobody else did.” Comedian Bill Maher declares, “I hate religion. It’s the worst thing in the world”—and goes on to defend his bold assertion. Writer Anna Quindlen depicts a common parental challenge: passing along traditions and values to a younger

Good Catholic Girls: How Women Are Leading the Fight to Change the Church

$0.99

The widely exposed transgressions of priests within the Catholic Church stunned the faithful and sent a new surge of energy through the progressive church reform movement in the United States. Despite the movement’s growing profile, the world has only recently learned that Catholic women are the driving force behind reform. Good Catholic Girls is a lively account of these courageous women, as seen through the eyes of an impassioned journalist, Angela Bonavoglia. They include Joan Chittister, the Benedictine nun who refused to obey a Vatican order not to speak at an international conference for women’s ordination groups; Mary Ramerman, ordained a Catholic priest before 3,000 jubilant supporters; Frances Kissling, whose fight for women’s reproductive rights has shaken the Church at its highest levels; Barbara Blaine, a priest abuse survivor who created the nation’s most powerful voice for victims; and Sister Jeannine Gramick, who built a pioneering ministry to gays and lesbians, despite Vatican orders to silence her and ban her work.Backed by supporters worldwide, these and other women are rethinking Catholic theology, changing the face of ministry, and resurrecting the lost lives of female church leaders. As Bonavoglia shows, the hierarchy ignores them at its peril.

Importance of Being Kennedy: A Bittersweet Comedy About America's Royal Family

Importance of Being Kennedy: A Bittersweet Comedy About America’s Royal Family

$0.99

From bestselling author Laurie Graham comes the late-life diaries of the Kennedys’ fictitious nanny: an inside look into the early years of the Kennedy dynasty—with all the juicy bits intact. When Nora Brennan, fresh to America from Ireland, lands herself a position as nursery maid to a family in Brookline, Massachusetts, she little thinks it will place her at the heart of American history. But her job is with the Kennedy family, so how could it not? Nora has charge of all nine Kennedy children, practically from the minute they’re born. She sees the boys coached at their father Joe’s knee to believe everything they’ll ever want in life can be bought. She sees the girls trained by Rose Kennedy (“Herself”) to be good Catholic wives. With her sharp eye and her quiet common sense, Nora is the perfect candidate to report on an empire in the making. World War II changes everything. When war breaks out, Nora and the Kennedys are in London, where Joseph Kennedy is the American ambassador. His reaction is to send the entire household back across the Atlantic to safety, but Nora, surprised by midlife love, chooses to stay in England and do her bit for the war effort. Separated from her Kennedys by an ocean, she nevertheless remains the warm, approachable sun around which the older children orbit: Joe Jr. and Jack, both serving in the US Navy; Rosemary, tragically unable to fit into the Kennedy mold; and Kathleen, known affectionately as “Kick,” who throws a spanner in the Kennedy works by marrying an English Protestant. Dear Nora has a deliciously inside view of everything that is happening upstairs, and in thisfictional diary she tells all with the humor and candor that only a nursemaid dare employ. Witty, irreverent, and a rollicking good read, The Importance of Being Kennedy is social satire at its best.

 Not That Kind of Girl

Not That Kind of Girl

$1.99

A moving, witty, and intelligent memoir of one woman’s quest to find the answers to life’s biggest questions Raised in evangelical churches that preached apocalypse now, Carlene Bauer grows up happy to oblige the God who presides over her New Jersey girlhood. But in high school and college, her intellectual and spiritual horizons widen, and she becomes skeptical of the judgmental God she’s been given. Still, she finds it hard to let go of the ideals she’s been raised with, and to rebel as she knows she should. She loves rock and roll, but politely declines offers of sex and drugs; she thinks the Bible and the Norton Anthology of American Literature are equally authoritative guides to life. Since there are no churches worshipping the Jesus Paul Westerberg sang about in “Can’t Hardly Wait,” and no tidy categories for those who are neither riot grrrls nor altar girls, she hovers between a hunger for the world and a suspicion of it. In her twenties, however, determined to make up for lost time, Bauer undertakes a belated and often comic coming-of-age in New York City. Between late blooming at parties and staying late at work, it seems that she might become as bold as she’d hoped to be—even if the late blooming is a little more hapless than highly erotic. And yet the city and its pleasures do not distract her from another hope: that she might learn how to have a faith that she can truly call her own. Enter the Catholic Church, and a conversion. But then she falls in love, and loses her religion—which leaves her wondering just what it means to be good. Sharply written, hilarious, and touching, Not That Kind of Girl is the story of one young woman’s efforts to define worldliness, ambition, and love on her own terms—while believing in, among other things, The Smiths, Virginia Woolf, and the transformative power of New York City. Fellow restless seekers will find solace in Bauer’s struggle

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Queen Street is one of the oldest streets in Singapore and once had a very strong Eurasian presence. Beginning at Arab street, Queen Street forms major junctions with Ophir Road, Rochor Road, Middle Road and Bras Basah Road before ending at the junction of Stamford Road and Armenian Street. The area around Stamford Canal, Dhoby Ghaut and Selegie Road was known for the laundry services provided by the dhobies (laundrymen) from the colonial days. Many schools of high regard like the Raffles Girls’ Secondary School, Saint Joseph’s Institution and the Catholic High School used to be located here. Queen Street is known for the many churches that line it. The first Roman Catholic church still in existence, the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd was built here in 1847 with the churches of Saint Joseph’s, Saints Peter and Paul and Our Lady of Lourdes following after. Other churches on this street include the Cantonese Methodist Kum Yan Church and Grace Singapore Chinese Church.

In this book Scars you Can’t See, Rita talks about her anger, bitterness and hatred which developed in her through the course of the years. She uses her own life experiences to tell the story. God gave her two tools to help her with her negative feelings. These tools are her attitude and her thinking. We have no control over anyone but ourselves. Resentments do no good at all. They just hurt the one who is harboring them. Rita spent her life under a great deal of stress trying to live up to the expectations of others. Every word of this book is true but it is not meant to hurt anyone. When she talks about people who hurt her she does not want anyone to look down on them. Rita is the victim of a stressed out unhappy childhood. This all took its toll on her later on in life. She mentions in this book that people stay in unhealthy marriages because they don’t have the courage or strength to admit they made a mistake. It is really much easier to stay. She says we all have scars you can’t see. This explains why sometimes people can display unacceptable behavior to one another. Rita is also the author of a poetry book My Heart My Mind and My Pen Combined published through Xlibris. She attended Catholic all girls boarding schools and colleges, but has her bachelor’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison NJ. Rita is a practicing Roman Catholic. In addition to writing this book she is a singer songwriter and musician of Christian Gospel songs.

Listed at 5′ 7″, 150 lb., she batted and threw right-handed. A dependable and versatile utility, Horstman excelled as a pitcher and catcher in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, being also able to play at third base and all outfield positions. As a pitcher, she was the dream of every manager, being a long reliever one day, volunteering to make an emergency start the next, and saving a game out the day after that. Horstman also was a good defensive catcher, with a good throwing arm and the ability to get most out of a pitching staff. But she was a superb defender at third base, demonstrating good range and throwing from any angle with remarkable accuracy. As a hitter, she ranks in the AAGPBL all-time list with a career .286 average (6th) and 23 home runs (11th), despite playing just four of the league’s twelve seasons. A native of Minster, Ohio, Horstman was the only girl in a home of six children. Whenever they played baseball she did it. She started to play on the Catholic Youth Organization softball team in Minster since the fifth grade. At 16, she was invited to tryouts for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and signed a contract for $250 a month to play with the Kenosha Comets before the 1951 season. Horstman started 1951 with Kenosha but was traded to the Fort Wayne Daisies during the midseason, playing for them until the demise of the league in 1954.
