All Things Are Labor $19.95 The enigmatic stories in this haunting collection deal with individuals striving to live outside the dominant American culture–people who do not want to be incorporated, appropriated, or consumed. Their battles are waged on interior and external landscapes, pitting clarity against confusion, faith against fear, the marginalized against the powerful, the passive against the aggressive. In one story, a Mennonite mother leaves her alcoholic husband and moves with her three children into an abandoned house and back to a life of faith, though a new faith, one of her own making. In another story, a teenager living in the darkness of a failing rust-belt city holds before her the only light she sees, her child, to guide the way as she moves across the border and beyond. A young artist in New York City pursues a simple life, a passive life, the yielding life of a Mennonite, even as she immerses herself in the gritty urban culture of the East Village. Another woman, given a short time to live, sets up ant farms on her stoop in Alphabet City and is determined to discover how worlds are made by watching the ants and only the ants. A Vietnam veteran finds meaning as a dishwasher at the Catholic Worker, where he circles on his stump of a leg, aware that the thing that is missing, that cannot be seen, is most present. Many of these stories experiment with the form of writing itself. They reflect the vision of an artist who remains separate-in the world, but not of the world–and whose goal is not to dazzle or entertain, but simply, humbly to be present for each word. |

Along the Shore (Dodo Press) $11.6 Rose Hawthorne Lathrop (1851-1926) was an American Roman Catholic nun and social worker. Born in Lenox, Massachusetts to Nathaniel Hawthorne and his wife Sophia, she was educated in London, Paris, Rome and Florence. She married author George Parsons Lathrop in 1883; the two of them converted to Roman Catholicism in 1891. Rose Hawthorne Lathrop was well known for her service near and within New York City, caring for impoverished cancer patients by founding St. Rose’s Free Home for Incurable Cancer in the Lower East Side. After the death of her husband (from whom she had separated before moving to New York City) in 1898, she became a nun, and as Mother Mary Alphonsa, she founded a community of Dominican nuns, now known as the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne. She was awarded an honorary A.M. from Bowdoin College in 1925. Among her famous works are: Along the Shore (1888), A Story of Courage (with George Parsons Lathrop) (1895), and Memories of Hawthorne (1897). |

American Catholic Pacifism $130.38 This collection of mostly original essays by scholars and Catholic Worker activists provides a systematic, analytical study of the emergence and nature of pacifism in the largest single denomination in the United States: Roman Catholicism. The collection underscores the pivotal role of Dorothy Day’s Catholic Worker movement in challenging the conventional understanding of just-war principles and the American Catholic Church’s identification with uncritical militarism. Also included are a study of Dorothy Day’s preconversion pacifism, previously unpublished letters from Dorothy Day to Thomas Merton, Eileen Egan’s account of the birth and early years of Pax, the Catholic Worker-inspired peace organization, and in-depth coverage of how the contemporary Plowshares movement emerged from the Catholic Worker movement. |

At My Mother’s Knee… and Other Low Joints $1.99 In his own uniquely acid tongue, Paul O’Grady traces the hilarious tales of life in Irish Catholic Birkenhead that took him from a virtuous altar-boy (“my first drag”) to Britain’s best loved entertainer. It’s a life that includes, varyingly, stints in an abbatoir, as a social worker, in a high-class Mayfair brothel, and traipsing down to London to chase his dreams. By 23, Paul O’Grady had been a father, husband, drag queen, gay lover, divorcee, and degenerate. He did it all with a smile on his face, making a mental note to register the whip-smart one-liners that would later inform his star-studded path from the fringes of comedy to the heart of the British establishment, first as his own brilliant comic creation Lily Savage, then, triumphantly, as himself. Paul’s remarkable childhood and early life is littered with a dizzying cast-list of rogues, rascals, lovers, fighters, saints, and sinners. Oh, and one iconic bus conductress. Told with pathos, love, empathy, and naturally, biting humor, the story of Paul O’Grady is that of everyman, everywoman, and inevitably, every drag act ever. He has been rich and poor, posh and common, straight and gay. He has mixed with stars and whores and all that’s in between, slyly spotting the similarity between them all. His amazing and riveting life story reminds us that there is, when all is said and done, a bit of savage in all of us. |

Christian Anarchism: A Political Commentary on the Gospel $26.22 Christian anarchism has been around for at least as long as “secular” anarchism. The existing literature cites Leo Tolstoy as its most famous (sometimes even as the only) proponent, but there are many others, such as Jacques Ellul, Vernard Eller, Dave Andrews or the people associated with the Catholic Worker movement. Both individually and collectively, these Christian anarchists offer a compelling critique of the state, the church and the economy based on numerous passages from the New Testament. Yet despite the relevance and growth of this literature, no generic study bringing together these different thinkers or reflecting on their contribution has been published to date, because such work involves meticulous searching, compiling and structuring of countless different texts and sources, not all of which are easily accessed. This book, however, provides precisely such a study, and thereby presents Christian anarchism to both the wider public and the wider academic community. |
