The uniformity across the uniform: the experience of a parent with school uniforms
Thanks to the uniformity Uniforms
by
Dave Posner
My friends, we have problems. This is the problem with a capital T that rhymes with P and E is synonymous with public education! When he was flim flammery, Harold Hill is nothing more than Bill Clinton. During the '96 campaign, the project Bill has found the perfect solution to what is wrong in our school uniforms public schools! We all Johnny and Sally a school uniform and discipline problems the magic disappears and test scores rise. and does not cost taxpayers a dime! As a campaign theme was perfect. In addition to cost anything, the only people who could oppose it, the students could not vote. And it is obvious that what children needed was the discipline and what better model of discipline that the Army and the soldiers wear uniforms as well as prisoners and members of gangs. I do not mean to suggest that Clinton does not believe in the idea – all good sellers believe that their own spiels. After helping to win the election, Clinton made a proposal school uniforms central state of the union leadership.
My own engagement with school uniforms before actually epiphany of Clinton. School Uniforms "Movement" began in Long Beach, California in 1994. With great fanfare the district of Long Beach school deployed its main weapon in the war against truancy, delinquency and poor academic performance. Usage statistics and computer the creators of the uniform policy of the school was able to demonstrate deep reductions in absenteeism, violence, sexual harassment and solid anecdotal evidence that students were much more focused and more content as a result of wear uniforms. Never since the discovery of cold fusion was so powerful evidence presented scientific phenomena. Nobody was sure how it worked, but surely, the panacea for our ills of education were found.
In light of the such powerful evidence, our school district in San Jose, California, could not act otherwise than to join the cause of school uniforms next year. Our motto is: unity through uniform! The new policy applies to primary education (first through the fifth year) and secondary (sixth to eighth grade) schools in the Alum Rock Unified School District. Alum Rock has long been one of the poorest neighborhoods to arrive at school in California. It is also one of the poorest neighborhoods – 80% of our students are eligible for free lunches – With a large population of families who do not speak English and students passing. The district also has a long history of meeting the most controversial – in a single incident in one of the board of directors was charged with assault for trying to crush another member Board – fast rotation policy and staff – Do not remember the last superintendent who terminated his contract – and mismanagement of resources diversion ends and a huge deficit caused by the cost of the technology used and quantity absurd administrative costs. Given the extent of their problems is perhaps not surprising that the neighborhood is an easy target for any form of snake oil salesman is going to come around. A year of school throughout the year, this year is "small schools" and public hearing, and in 1995 was the uniform school.
In 1995, my third child, Rebecca, was a student back in the eighth arrondissement. During the summer, had received a letter informing us that our daughter will have to comply with a new school uniform policy. Now, I must confess that all my children, and especially Rebecca have difficulty within the ad hoc. It is without doubt the culpability of their parents. Rebecca could not understand why they were forced to wear uniform and therefore vowed to defy the order. Personally, I was ambivalent on the issue but could not reach a convincing argument why should conform to the policy that you're in trouble if they are not.
My second son, who was at school school at the time, had received a pamphlet explaining the rights of UCLA students in general and the rights of students on school uniforms in particular. Among other things, the booklet explains that California law allows school uniforms in public schools said that students with consent parental right to opt for uniform policy, with no effect on their rights and privileges. The law also provides for districts to implement a policy school uniform was compelled to inform parents and students of their right to choose. None of the literature he had received the school had talked of such rights – a fact that raises our anger. This, combined with our inability to find a justification for school uniform policy has led us to send a letter to the school principal informing him that Rebecca had our permission to refuse. "
This course prompted a phone call from director, who wanted to know why and how we right to exclude. When he was informed that as a right guaranteed by law, tried to argue that, despite all the literature refers to the new policy as a school uniform policy was simply a dress code more restrictive and therefore not covered by the law. Having rejected these arguments in hand tried to argue the main reason the policy. Now he was all for a reasoned debate about politics and at one point during the year had my daughter write your case for not wearing the uniform and suggested she and the director who meet to discuss their reasons. This meeting was a disaster, as the main do not really dare to try to understand the point of view of one of the three.
- Finally whatever the reason, statistics show that Long Beach work uniforms for a theory of causation is not necessary.
Before the fight against these arguments that I've never felt very passionate about the school itself uniform. My main interest lies in understanding what are the policy as the policy of school uniforms say about the values and goals of their creators and the reasons for the acceptance uncritical of the policies of the population in general. My concern is not of this particular policy that I regard as very mild, so stupid, but that point of view represented and the inability to see many potential problems with this view and in fact led to the creation of policies that are actually harmful to students, and therefore the future of our society.
Let's start with the idea that uniforms promote unity. My interpretation of the unit is a belief among those who are united in a common set of objectives and a specific set of measures to achieve these objectives. Now, the unit itself is not necessarily a good thing. Sometimes, as in the establishment of American democracy is clearly good and other times on the drive to subdue and destroy other cultures and races that show poor thing. After all, members of a lynching are united in their goal. So what type of unit required students to wear uniforms of parenthood? One type of unit that I could imagine that arises is the unity of the oppressed. One could imagine students by saying: "Whatever our differences ethnic, cultural, social or class can agree that we hate being forced to wear uniforms and we hate! "This would certainly represent unit values that could lead to a unity of action, but probably not the kind of unity is the author of this policy to promote.
If Take Action back and know what kind of unity that the authors wanted to achieve. It is assumed that, since the authors are teachers who want the unity of students is a common belief in the value of education and a commitment to become the education working hard in their classes. I have no argument with this objective, but that superstition and the same logic can be connected to be forced to wear a uniform belief in the value of education? No matter how I approach the question I do not see how it could promote the uniform any positive form of the unity of all.
My conclusion is that this really means is that the theme uniforms promote unity, but rather the lack of uniform promotes disunity. The theory is that differences underscore our differences of dress, cultural, Social and ethnic and class so it is difficult for students to be unified. But, again, by what logic or superstition connection the existence or nonexistence of differences, superficial or otherwise, with others of my belief in the value of education and commitment to work hard in my classes? Worse, what message are we sending to students by suggesting that there is a link? Are we saying that people differences can not all be educated?
Taking the value of eliminating superficial distinctions. What value does it not? Perhaps we are trying to convince students that the clothes do not make the man by placing students in an environment where everyone the door. We see this as a kind of experience that will enable students to observe firsthand the suit does not matter. But what the relationship between an experiment in which all students in the same dress and the assumption that the suit does not care? Any experience could prove the tautology that is clothes does not matter in an environment where the clothes are forced to be constant. I think If we get students regardless of the clothes of the message must be placed in an environment that can see for themselves that people arbitrarily well dressed can be arbitrarily ignorant and stupid. I've certainly been able to see that in my education in public schools.
Perhaps the developers believe that uniform clothing that really matters, but aims to provide an environment in which they are not. Could be interested by the poor student whose self-image and hence its ability to function in class is equally negatively by their lack of beautiful clothes. These would be inconsistent to equalize the chances for him? To this question I will ask for some economic theory ", with the observational data of teacher I know. The lack of economic theory (contained incorrect) is that the decline of the options available to consumers can increase their costs. When the student poor before the uniform policy can choose from a variety of sources, including clothing worn clothing, thrift shops, discount stores, and a variety styles to achieve respectability to a lower cost, is now limited to the available supply of uniforms. These higher costs the clothes he buys or otherwise receive it is forced to buy less of them. The result is that their uniform (which may one) are used more often and be replaced less often if the clothes they have in the absence of a uniform policy. The result as evidenced by teacher observation, that the uniform really poor children are generally much dirtier and much worse in general that the standard of other children. In schools with a uniform policy there is absolutely difficult to distinguish from the money they have with their new boosts costs that have not damaged their old uniforms dirty. donations is true that some schools districts have organized public or provided to subsidize purchase of uniforms for poor students. (I do not agree, but perhaps even a requirement under the Uniform Act.) But the same economic argument, supplements, clothing for poor children could be more effectively used to buy clothes in an environment in which they are not limited in respect of products and supplies. Uniforms can only make things worse for poor children.
What about stories of children killed by their jackets or sneakers? No uniform to avoid such tragedy? The problem with this theory is that if students want to use or carry expensive items in an environment where children kill for expensive items that will always be able to find a way of doing things compatible with a uniform law. Rolex watches, expensive jewelry, computers, etc., booties and jackets are made consistent with the uniform policy in our district. I think we can assume that students are not willing to die and that the real solution is to educate students and their parents about the risk carry expensive things in an environment where people kill themselves for such objects. There are things you can do except when you see students at risk because they carry these items, send them home in the basis that we can not guarantee your safety while you are taking these issues. You not need a uniform policy for doing so.
The latter applies also to wear gang colors. All Everyone knows what the gang colors alike. If you see gang colors on a guy who was sent home on the grounds that its holding is likely to cause violence and put him and others in danger. Again, you do not need a uniform policy in this regard. (This would be a pleasant surprise anyone who thinks that if a band member in contact with the ACLU and tried to make a case for their constitutional right to fly its flag. Unfortunately, this will happen not.) Now, of course maintenance school colors of gangs are not really solve the problem of gangs. I find it hard to imagine a child decides not to join a gang in the base colors to use against school policy. ("Dear Leader Group: I wish to express my sincere thanks for the opportunity to join your group excellent. But I must reject because my school uniforms are incompatible with the colors of a gang. )
I think one of the strongest reasons for not joining a gang is a natural desire not bump around. As I understood, the bands are strictly hierarchical. The leader of the group said this, and how and what he wears. Therefore, it seems likely that the promotion of individuality to strengthen the resilience of a young person to join a gang. ("Who is this idiot space to say what to do?") To establish a uniform policy of the school seems to be discouraging individuality. In this sense, different types of activities in which the groups concerned, it appears that little difference between the politics of the band and school policy.
- Decisions that come to mind are chatting with friends, hair, makeup and jewelry, download and listen to music, games, Internet, Drugs and sex.
The theory that the uniforms that the students are teachers indistinguishable prevent discrimination against students has been exposed by the director of my daughter. I confess that this argument makes me almost speechless. Is this really the case that discrimination against students by teachers is a widespread problem? Are those camouflage uniforms effective and / or teachers are so blind that even after few weeks to see almost every day, students are not able to find a way to distinguish between them? Is not it sometimes helpful for teachers to be able to distinguish a student from another? Should we extend the uniform policy for students must wear masks and speak through distortion voice?
The final argument in support of the uniform above is that the empirical data shows its Long Beach operation. I have two basic concerns of this argument. My first concern is the ethics of a pure trial and error to improve schools. This implies an approach in which the experiments were conducted without theoretical foundations and apply them to the lives of human beings without their consent. Having decided that the uniforms are good, we must now begin a series of experiments different outfits to see if we can do better? Maybe put all students in Bermuda. What are the effects of having students dress as? Should we treat a school naked?
My second concern is scientific. As the first on a Limb and require school uniforms in Long Beach has a obvious interest to find success in their statistics the same way that the people of Cold Fusion I wanted to find free neutrons in their experiments. This phenomenon is well known in science and peer review and the requirement of repeatability by impartial observers. All science is difficult and science based on analysis of data is particularly prone to errors. Are we confident in the data of Long Beach?
Apparently not. An Internet search showed the effects of uniforms for students in attendance, behavioral problems, substance use, and academic performance of David L. Brunsma and Kerry A. Rockquemore Department of Sociology at the University of Notre Dame. (See http://www.cprlafayette.com/study.htm .) I apologize for my prejudice, but when I saw this link that I have assumed that the study of school uniforms, made in a university Catholic would be biased in favor of uniform. This was not the case at all.
The document begins with the following, in my opinion, the statement strange.
- This is a high level of research studies genuinely based on recognized methods Scientific Research. It became a way to minimize bias on the part of researchers and establish an objective finding.
- We could not find a studio opposition to match this level of study.
- Many studies, including the famous Long Beach (one district school without school uniform and an opt-out for all others) have referred to the benefits of school uniforms, but they are based more on guesswork than scientific research – can be found continue until more rudimentary elements of a study of scientific research.
- We are open to anyone who can find and send it to us.
"In search of design testing valid this is supposed to test and indicate whether the concepts under study are actually measured or tested. (Research Methods – 3rd Edition of the Survey process Graziano / Raulin)
I've never seen a scientific study he felt compelled to state explicitly that he used scientific methods instead of something else (superstition?). Apparently the field is so full of garbage that the authors believe that this statement was necessary.
As to its conclusions, the summary says:
recent discourse on public school reform has focused on mandatory uniform policies. Supporters of the measures reform emphasize the benefits of uniforms for students in academic results and performance. The search for empirical evidence of claims made by proponents of uniform tenth year using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988. Our results indicate that school uniforms have no direct effect on drug use, behavioral problems or attendance. A negative effect of the uniform on academic achievement was found. These results are contrary to current discourse on school uniforms. We concluded that uniform policies may indirectly affect school environments and student outcomes, providing a public and visible symbol of the commitment to improvement School and reform.
- If the winds of the cost-benefit analysis at least slightly positive and allowed them a chance.
If this last statement seems correct, please think again. In particular, there is a missing piece of our analysis cost-benefit? In the jargon of management, are there any actors whose interests are not taken into account? What about students? Have you rights? Your interests and feelings on the issue of having something? Does anyone believe that if given complete freedom of choice to students who have opted requirement for a school uniform? I believe that this failure to students of all settlements or state's rights over their own life and education is the most damaging of these policies. We are mostly students, saying: We will say what to do, when to do and even what to wear during you do. Just sit back, silent, and educate!
I'm not the opponents of formal education. Obviously children are not able to take control of their own life and education. But as we grow more and more that the structure is to relax and maintain the idea that education is the responsibility of the student. The more control we give to students process may become an active participant in the pursuit of an education. The more control, we remove a student, rather than pushing to become a passive or even unwilling. The constraints that we impose should be viewed as a necessary evil. We must not impose arbitrary restrictions belief that "good can no harm. "
If logic and science are not compatible with a policy like school uniforms why it is so popular and what is the motivation behind creation, which seems to me that the motivation of the school uniform policy, and many others in a way superstition called magic friendly. The idea of sympathetic magic is that in order to create the phenomenon of creating a similar phenomenon B to A in some With regard to the hope that comes into existence through a kind of resonance with B, as sympathetic vibrations in strings and other objects that vibrate. Primitive peoples, for example, try to induce rain by spraying water or other liquid on the floor or make the sky with clouds of smoke or dust. It's certainly the idea behind the theory that uniforms create unity of purpose – the same clothes that people somehow, that are similar in other respects.
A form of sympathetic magic postulates of reverse causality: if the occurrence of an B, followed by the creation of BI through a reverse causality are brought to life. Conditions due to rain from the sky to cloudy skies that facilitates the "cloud" will bring rain, rain makes the road wet, so to convert the wetland rain. I think that in the uniform of the defenders heart of trying to create a set of attitudes and values to our children, what would you wear the uniform of reversed causality in them wear uniforms.
So what kind of mental state are the uniformed lawyers trying to create in our children? All we can assume that is uniform across all children. It is a state that delights in compliance. He is comfortable with individuality and differences of any kind. It is accepting of conventional views and decisions of the group without a critical analysis critical analysis would take at least the possibility disagreement, so it is not uniform. These ideals school students with the manager a dream. They are without will or the spine. This is not a new ideal. In The Mechanical Bride: Folklore of Industrial Man, Marshall McLuhan described the ideal formation around 1950 as follows:
"Our educational process is necessarily appropriate to remove all bones. The flexible, well-set is one who has learned to jump in the meat grinder, humming a song charts. individual resistance to this process is labeled as destructive and uncooperative. "
McLuhan 1950 Education for grinding meat seems particularly relevant today. In recent years, executives, most retirees from the business community have become very active in educational reform. These executives almost always see the value in the application modern industrial processes and operational research to improve the efficiency and quality of education. For scale large volumes of these processes depends on the consistency, predictability and measurability. Quality is the result of processing the application Uniform uniform methods for materials with constant monitoring of data in strict compliance set. In this school which implies a need for consistency in student populations and tight control and measurement of teaching methods. This view is inconsistent with the notion of an autonomous physical responsibility for their own production. This material may not prescribe methods of selecting targets who could enter the field of the metric used to measure progress.
My feeling is that the promotion of corporate executives from this point of view are far behind the times. The human material is ridiculously ineffective as a basis for the types of components of these programs seem to be trying to create. We much better material to silicon, for example. The reliability of silicon devices and control in adaptation to predict the behavior of several orders of magnitude higher than that of humans. These devices can be constructed and operated under cost in quantities that are desired. In addition, the complexity of behavior These devices are able to include all types of problems that affect small areas and little or no creative analysis within the domain of the metric underlying process improvement in education. In short, the products of this type of educational process are more likely to become obsolete before they are finished.
Humans will be useful for the present and the future should be the opposite of the uniform and predictable. Excel where humans are in the creative and unpredictable. A system that promotes consistency and unquestioning acceptance of arbitrary political minimizes exactly the kind of mental faculties of our children and our society needs to survive.
My daughter survived the end of his final year of the rebellion, but I do not think she was spared. Certainly suffered various forms harassment by teachers, administrators and students. Its non-compliance appears to be a point of obsession at school. Curiously the harassment only increased last year and peaked at the end of the year. After all how my daughter Non-compliance could lead director has decided to terminate the final attack. He did not allow him to appear on the graduation picture of the class without a uniform – A policy clearly in violation of the Uniform Law School in California. Do not go into the gory details of what followed, because he does not speak well my intelligence. Suffice it to say that my daughter was published in his class picture her father was arrested for disturbing the peace school! Recently, the director was removed from school because students are not progressing sufficiently in relation to another piece of idiocy called California Academic Performance Index. I almost felt sorry for him.
