 A Cloister In The World

A Cloister In The World

$19.95

This book is the true story of a lay Catholic Movement in Chile (known as the Manquehue Apostolic Movement) which is deeply involved in education and in the opportunities and problems today of living the gospel in charity in the midst of the confusions of contemporary cultures and counter-cultures. The early narrative chapters tell the story, which must be of lively interest to any Christians dealing with the young, living with the handicapped, seeking to bring the wonder of gospel truth into the everyday life of the laity in families, in workplaces, in their hopes and dreams for the future. In the later chapters the author links all this experience to the vision of Vatican II for the laity of today, showing its vital relevance to everyone, not only in South America but wherever Christians are truly seeking their own role for the laity in bringing the gospel to all mankind. Vital to all, this story is the role of Benedictine spirituality in the development of this Chilean Catholic Movement. In the life of this lay Movement Saint Benedict’s Rule has played a vital role. The story of how it has come about, not only in this Movement but in other lay Movements and groups throughout the world, is explained by the author before he ends with living examples of how many young people have been affected by the Rule and the Manquehue Movement.

A Fractured Relationship: Faith and the Crisis of Culture

A Fractured Relationship: Faith and the Crisis of Culture

$12.16

“Contemplating the current alienation of religion and Western society, Norris seeks its cause, then its cure, in a properly understood Trinitarian theology that allows the depth of Christian living to emerge.”John M. McDermott, S.J.Theological Studies”Throughout this book Norris is concerned primarily with faith, to the extent that at times he becomes almost breathless with conviction. It comes as no surprise to see him highlighting the radically communitarian spirituality of Chiara Lubich, who along with a few companions learned from war and desolation how to live the New Commandment of Jesus Christ. The Focolare movement that they initiated seems to this reviewer to be, in terms of hope for the future, the best-grounded spiritual movement that has come into existence since the Second Vatican Council.”Brian PowerBooks Ireland”It is the remarkable achievement of Thomas Norris to blend clear-eyed doctrine and deep devotion, as his critical thought grapples with present problems with a contemplative vision that sees beyond them. This work is indeed a remarkable instance of a revitalized Catholic theology: the range of its reference and its keen sense of the historical moment make it an inspiring source for theological students and a challenge for their teachers.”Anthony Kelly, CSsRAustralian Catholic University”Norris raises question that are of fundamental importance to Christians … highly recommended.”Edin CassidyThe Furrow

 A Journey With Jonah

A Journey With Jonah

$13.65

The Book of Jonah, although a work of only two pages long, has made an extraordinary impact on the history of Jewish, Catholic, and Islamic spirituality. As the author demonstrates in this compact and readable book, the Book of Jonah emerges as perhaps the most profoundly Christian of all the books in the Hebrew Bible, and the book that speaks with the most telling resonance for our own age. The Book’s message is a serious and compelling one.

 A Mennonite Woman

A Mennonite Woman

$15.01

As Sara Wenger Shenk, President-Elect, Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, puts it, “Rooting Mennonite spirituality within the earthy settledness of her grandmother’s story, Nelson lovingly shows the way toward a spirituality of pilgrimage, in the company of Jesus” In a book that is part narrative, part theology, part spiritual memoir, Dawn Ruth Nelson draws on a Mennonite background, encounter with Irish Catholic faith, and the spiritual life she discovers in her grandmother and her own everyday life to propose contemporary forms of spiritual formation and expression. “Although Nelson’s six suggestions for contemporary spirituality are focused on Mennonite tradition and experience,” observes Joann Wolski Conn, Professor of Christian Spirituality, Neumann University, “their transforming power make them applicable for anyone desiring Christian formation.” C. Arnold Snyder, Professor of History, Conrad Grebel University College, comments that “Nelson’s search leads from her grandmother’s life in Mennonite community, through peace work in Ireland and engagement with the Roman Catholic tradition, and finally to the essential inner/outer balance of the Anabaptist spiritual tradition-a response of discipleship made possible by the spiritual connection to the living vine, Jesus Christ.”

A Monk in the World: Cultivating a Spiritual Life

A Monk in the World: Cultivating a Spiritual Life

$1.99

The Mystic Heart chronicled Brother Wayne Teasdale’s journey into a multifaceted spirituality blending his traditional Catholic training and the Eastern way of sannyasa (Indian monkhood). A Monk in the World tells what that journey has meant for him — living as a monk outside the monastery, integrating teachings from the world’s religions with his own Catholic training, combining his vigorous spiritual practice with the necessities of making a living, and pursuing a course of social justice in a major American city. In telling his story, Teasdale shows how others can find their own “internal monastery” and bring spiritual practice into their busy lives.

A Short Course in Christian Doctrine

A Short Course in Christian Doctrine

$27.17

A Short Course in Christian Doctrine sets out to offer an introduction to Christian doctrine, emphasizing that ”doctrine” refers primarily to a dynamic teaching process, rather than to a set of propositions about belief. The chief model for this process is the divine life itself, both in its inner Trinitarian movement and in its sacramental and historical self-expression in creation, incarnation and tradition. Drawing on Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox sources, as well as being in dialogue with such modern philosophers as Habermas and Heidegger, this Short Course also involves extensive discussions of homiletics, spirituality, the relationship between Christianity and culture, and perspectives for Christian approaches to ethical and political challeneges.

A Short Encounter With The Latter-Day Saints

A Short Encounter With The Latter-Day Saints

$10.57

The faith of ‘The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ was not an important matter to the local Vicar until they built a massive Temple in his parish! Apart from the sheer size of the building, he soon learned that the matter was of considerable importance because of the challenge to catholic Christianity which went with it. The challenge is that they are the only true Church. Such a claim by a backwater cult would not matter, but this was by an alternative spirituality with a presence in as many countries as the Roman Catholic church. This book describes his getting to know the new neighbours while at the same time learning their beliefs and the way they are lived with no pre-judgemental thought of denigrating them. This fact-finding journey took a circuitous route: from visiting the early LDS settlement at Nauvoo (USA,) attending a ‘Mormon Studies’ Conference at Durham (UK,) meeting the Temple- and Missionary Training- Presidents in the new Preston Temple, and living with LDS families in New Zealand around the first Temple built outside America. This was followed by extensive academic study. The result is to see the Latter-day Saints as a people with a sustaining, and in many ways a fulfilling, faith but not one which justifies their claim that all other churches apostatized soon after the earthly life of Jesus Christ. This is the heart of their belief: that they form the Christian Church restored as Jesus had always meant it to be, in these ‘latter days’ .

A Table in the Desert: Making Space Holy

A Table in the Desert: Making Space Holy

$1.99

In his previous book, A Season in the Desert, W. Paul Jones developed a richly imaginativeapproach to “Making Time Holy.” In his companion volume, A Table in the Desert, he applies the same creative Christian approach to “Making Space Holy.” From the maternal wombs of the Appalachian coal mines of his upbringing, to his life-changing pilgrimage into the Grand Canyon, he shares how the sacredness of space shapes our very understanding of God. Using architectural examples from Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Fallingwater” to the Vietnam Memorial wall, Fr. Jones portrays Christain spirituality as the call to shape public and private spaces into beauty. The seamless melding of his earlier Protestant life with more recent experiences as a Catholic monk and priest, makes this volume thoroughly ecumenical and provides clues to a reconciling approach to the sacraments. Presenting erudite theological ideas in earthly, spirited prose, Fr. Jones invites our senses to enter into a “carnal spirituality,” ecstatically experiencing God by falling in love with Life and living.

A Tapestry of Beliefs: Christian Traditions in Northern Ireland

A Tapestry of Beliefs: Christian Traditions in Northern Ireland

$13.75

While religion is not the only factor in the Northern Ireland conflict, myth and misinformation about the similarities and differences that exist between the four largest Churches (Catholic, Presbyterian, Church of Ireland and Methodist) and the score or so of smaller denominations contribute to the poisonous climate of sectarianism. In this important new book, representatives of each Christian tradition in the North dispel much of this misinformation in clear statements of their actual beliefs, practices and structures.Written by members of the denominational traditions, each chapter follows broadly similar themes: their origins, doctrinal position, sacraments and ordinances, spirituality, worship and liturgy, buildings and artefacts, and attitudes to other denominations.Additional chapters analyse some of the issues — and isms — which cross denominational boundaries, including evangelicalism and fundamentalism, ecumenism, politics, sectarianism, and the role of women.

A Thankful Heart and a Discerning Mind: Essays in honour of John Newton

A Thankful Heart and a Discerning Mind: Essays in honour of John Newton

$21.76

‘A Christ for All, A Church for All, A Theology for All’ is the abiding theme of the life of John Newton, one of British Methodism’s great pastors, educators, ecumenists and scholars. Rooted in the theology and spirituality of the Wesley brothers, John Newton showed himself to be very open to the insights of the wider Christian Church. In Liverpool, his friendship with Bishop David Sheppard and Archbishop Derek Worlock enabled him to express the ‘social’ Christianity of his upbringing through a fruitful ecumenical partnership that did much to help the city during a very troubled period. And when the centenary of Cardinal Newman’s death was commemorated in an ecumenical service at St Paul’s Cathedral, John was invited to preach. Now, in celebration of an active ministry that spanned thirty-five years before continuing well into retirement, international Methodist, Anglican and Roman Catholic scholars have contributed essays that reflect John Newton’s varied interests: Methodist history, spirituality, ecumenism, Mariology, theological education, Newman, preaching and theology. The book also includes a biography of John Newton by Henry Rack.

So, let me share with you the three major milestones of spiritual growth of which most serious Catholics would recognize as part of their tradition and heritage.

Our journey into the expanded consciousness of God has many detours. This isn’t one of them.

The first stage is called the purgative stage. Especially as one embraces the concept of original sin, there’s the obvious need to ditch that monkey. However, if you believe that we’re created in the image of God and more from a state of original innocence, hen the purging, cleansing, is more about one’s EGO than what might have happened however many mythical years ago in some garden.

Next comes the illumative stage wherein we begin to see moe fully who we are. That means that we recognize the divine that mixes with the human. We realize that we’re one with God as Jesus had prayed. It’s always exciting when we see the light go on in various aras of our life.

Finally we move closer to the unitive stage and we let go of so many things in this world that we thought we wanted, and we relaize that we only want to return home and be ONE with our Creator. We finally realize that we can’t threaten people into being good, we can’t hold the fear of hell over their head, and  in fact, we’re helpless to do anything but LOVE everyone. It’s a great gamble filled with great uncertainty.

Are you there yet?

Can you hear me now?

Can you just love everyone now?
