The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day $8.05 A cult phenomenon returns with The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day. The vigilante MacManus brothers (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus, reprising their roles from the first movie) have retired to Ireland, but a copycat killing of a Boston priest brings them back to dish out their unique brand of quasi-spiritual justice. The story line doesn’t differ much from the first movie; the brothers … |

Catholic Paws/Catholic Pause $15.98 After the slightly disappointing Behind the Barber (not bad, simply a bit insubstantial), Rollerball answered with one of their best albums yet, the more song-oriented Catholic Paws/Catholic Pause. Actually, the 15 tracks on this CD are almost evenly split between songs and instrumentals, but Mimi Wagonwheel and company are smoothing things down on this release. Exit the ska-punk episodes: the songs lean toward intelligent pop, with accessible arrangements and moving melodies. Of course, things are not that simple and the lyrics would not pass by unnoticed on mainstream radio (even songs like the beautiful “Erzulie” and “Coburn” have an odd atmosphere), but Catholic Paws/Catholic Pause contains some of Rollerball’s best-written, most memorable material. Plus, it features Mae Starr as a full-fledged singer, her deep alto voice crooning seductively. As usual with this band, the instrumentals shuffle the deck: odd beats, strange solos, a reggae feel here, an avant-garde jazz angularity there — they act like prisms showing different facets of what has just been heard. Both songs and instrumentals are kept short and to the point: no wasted time, no extra chorus repeated for the sake of duration. Melodies are catchy enough to catch them the first time, so once they have been exposed, the band moves on to the next transitional tune, then straight into another song. The basic quintet receives help from a cast of regular friends, including singer Stefania Pedretti and drummer Bruno Dorella (of OvO), tubaist Ben Wright, and maverick sax player Jacopo Andreini. There is not a single throwaway on this album, except maybe for the “hidden” lo-fi jam, which will definitely not be to everyone’s liking. But who cares, as long as there are songs like “Erzulie,” “Tipping the Tree,” and “Sores”? Recommended. ~ François Couture, Rovi Performers: Ben Wright – Tuba; Bruno Dorella – Drums; Gilles – Drums (Electric), Percussion, Drums; Jacopo Andreini – Sax (Alto), Vocals, Percussion; Jamie Smith – Clarinet; Stefania Pedretti – Vocals |

A Catholic Education $24.78 Hard to believe now, but Teenage Fanclub first attracted critical attention for a record far removed from the sparkling power pop on which their fame largely rests — with its gloriously sloppy and sludgy sound, their debut album A Catholic Education instead prefigures the emergence of grunge, its viscous melodies and squalling guitars owing far more to Neil Young than Big Star. With not one but two songs dubbed “Heavy Metal,” it’s pretty obvious where A Catholic Education is coming from; the title track (also here in duplicate) is a surprisingly snarky attack on the church (at least for a band not exactly renowned for its political agenda), while the great “Everybody’s Fool” is a merciless scenester put-down without any of the gentle sarcasm that characterizes similarly themed efforts like Bandwagonesque’s “Metal Baby.” Regardless, for all its glaring differences in attitude and approach, there’s no mistaking the effortless melodicism that remains the hallmark of all Teenage Fanclub records — in particular, the opening “Everything Flows,” for all its meandering abrasiveness, is still as good as anything the band ever recorded, and that’s saying something. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi |

13th-Century Roman Catholic Priests $22.63 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Gui D’ussel, Nicholas of Arbroath, Pierre Clergue, Peter González, Amaury de Montfort, Canon of York, Thomas of Cantimpré, Brother Robert, Bernardus Compostellanus Junior, Richard of Ingworth, William de Stanwey, Serlo, Roger de Wynkleigh, Dearmid O’cuana. Excerpt: Gui d’Ussel, d’Ussèl, or d’Uisel (fl. 11951209) was a turn-of-the-thirteenth-century troubadour of the Limousin. Twenty of his poems survive: eight cansos, two pastorelas, two coblas, and eight tensos, several with his relatives and including a partimen with Maria de Ventadorn. Four of his cansos melodies remain. According to his vida, Gui was the youngest of three sons of a wealthy noble family of the castle Ussel-sur-Sarzonne, northeast of Ventadorn. He and his brothers Ebles and Peire, as well as his cousin Elias, are all reputed troubadours and castellans of Ussel according to the author of the vida, who makes Gui himself a canon of Montferrand and Brioude in the diocese of Clermont. Among his relatives Gui was known for his cansos. The only confirmation of Gui’s family from outside his vida is a reference to the brothers Guido and Eblo Usseli donating land to the abbey of Bonaigue. Gui’s biographer believed him to have been in love with Malgarita, wife of Rainaut VI, viscount of Aubusson. He supposedly later fell in love with Guillemette de Comborn, wife of Dalfi d’Alvernha, and composed many songs about her. Gui spent almost his entire life in the Limousin and Auvergne, rarely travelling abroad. Gui addresses several of his songs to Maria de Ventadorn (including the partimen) and makes reference to Peter II of Aragon in one which survives with a melody. The reference to Peter’s queen in the song’s razo puts the date of its composition in 1204 or later, after Peter’s marria… |

An Introduction to English Poetry $204.23 A wise, absorbing, and surprising introduction to poetry written in English, from one of England’s leading poets James Fenton is that rare scholar not ashamed to admit that he mostly reads for pleasure (Charles Simic, The New York Review of Books). In this eminently readable guide to his abiding passion, he has distilled the essense of a library’s–and a lifetime’s–worth of delight. The pleasures of his own verse can be found in abundance here: economy, a natural ease, and most of all, surprise. What is English poetry? Fenton argues that it includes any recited words in English that marshall rhythm for their meaning–among them prisoners’s work songs, Broadway show tunes, and the cries of street vendors captured in verse. From these beginnings, Fenton describes the rudiments of–and, most important, the inspiration for–the musical verse we find in books, and concludes with an illuminating discussion of operas and songs. Fenton illustrates his comments with verse from all over the English-speaking world. Catholic in his taste, shrewd in his distinctions, and charmingly frank, Fenton is an ideal guide to everything to do with poetry, from the temperament of poets to their accomplishment, in all its variety. In all his writing, prose or verse, Fenton has always had the virtue of saying, in a way that seems effortless, precisely what lies at the heart of the matter. In this vein, An Introduction to English Poetry is one of his highest accomplishments. |

Anne’s Bohemia $28 The first book in English on medieval Czech literature.Anne’s Bohemia is the first book in English to introduce the little-known riches of medieval Bohemian culture. Alfred Thomas considers the development of Czech literature and society from the coronation of Count John of Luxembourg as king of Bohemia in 1310 to the year 1420, when the papacy declared a Catholic crusade against the Hussite reformers. This period is of particular relevance to the study of medieval England because of Richard II’s marriage to Anne of Bohemia, the figure around whom this book is conceived.Anne’s Bohemia offers a social context for the most important works of literature written in the Czech language, from the earliest spiritual songs and prayers to the principal Hussite and anti-Hussite tracts of the fifteenth century. The picture that emerges from Thomas’s close readings of these texts is one of a society undergoing momentous political and religious upheavals in which kings, queens, clergy, and heretics all played crucial roles. Expert but accessibly written, the book offers an engaging overview of medieval Bohemian culture for specialist and nonspecialist alike. |

Austrian Pop Singers: Falco $10.28 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Johann (Hans) Hölzel (19 February 1957 6 February 1998), better known by his stage name Falco, was an Austrian, pop , rock and hip hop musician and had six #1 Hits – “Der Kommissar”, “Rock Me Amadeus”, “Jeanny”, “Coming Home (Jeanny Part 2)”, “Vienna Calling”, “Body next to Body (with Brigitte Nielsen) and “The Spirit never dies (Jeanny final)”. With “Rock Me Amadeus” he is the first and so far only artist to score a #1 Hit in the U.S. with a German language song. His estate has sold 40 million albums and 20 million singles to date, which makes him one of the best selling Austrian singers ever. Born in Vienna on February 19, 1957, Hans Hölzel was the sole survivor of triplets. He began to show signs of unusual musical talent very early. As a toddler, he was able to keep time with the drumbeat in songs he heard on the radio. He was given a baby grand piano for his fourth birthday; a year later, his birthday gift was a record player which he used to play music by Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, and the Beatles. At age five, he auditioned for the Vienna Music Academy, where it was confirmed that he had perfect pitch. In 1963, Hölzel began his schooling at a Roman Catholic private school; four years later, at age ten, he switched to the Rainer Gymnasium in Vienna. Shortly thereafter his father Alois Hölzel left the family. From then on, Hölzel was raised by his mother and grandmother and remained very close to them all his life. He left school at sixteen in 1973 due to absenteeism. His mother then insisted he begin an apprenticeship with the Austrian employee pension insurance institute, but this only lasted a short time. At seventeen, he volunteered for eight months of military service with the Austrian army. He entered the Vienna Music Conservato… |

However, in the early years of the state censorship was widely enforced, particularly in areas which were opposed by Catholic dogma; including abortion, sexuality and homosexuality. In the past, Ireland’s Film Censors Office renamed in 2008 to the Irish Film Classification Office heavily cut films, and also videos for rental release; or placed extremely high age ratings on them. However, since the release of Michael Collins in 1996, which was rated PG for historical reasons, despite its depictions of extreme violence, the censors office has reduced age ratings in general and rarely cuts films. For example, the controversial 2004 film 9 Songs was released uncut with an 18s certificate. Ratings usually match those of the UK, or are one level higher or lower. Also, in 2000 The Cider House Rules received an 18s certificate in Ireland due to its themes of abortion and incest, despite the fact that in UK the film received a mere 12s certificate. Six film rating categories exist, although a film may have been re-rated by the time of its video/DVD release. Three separate categories exist for video releases, although only two are in use: The G, PG and 18 certifications have the same principles on v… More: |

East Bench $19.95 Living in Salt Lake City in the mid 1960s, three naive parochial school friends are swept up by Beatle-mania and the British Invasion. Obsessed with music, their band, their original songs, and equipment they can ill afford, the former altar boys also become infatuated with Mormon girls, much to the mortification of their priests and fanatically Catholic parents.
