Bring God to the Negro, Bring the Negro to God $72.99 Archbishop Thomas Joseph Toolen was the Bishop of Mobile through some rather turbulent times for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mobile, Alabama. One of the most frequently occurring questions he had to deal with was the question of race. During the early decades of his episcopate, Toolen carried out his mission of saving the souls of Alabama’s African Americans by establishing separate missions, thereby expanding the South’s only truly biracial religion while also respecting societal norms crystallized in the Jim Crow laws of segregation. When the atmosphere was such that it was practical, Toolen acted quietly to integrate all levels of Catholic education which included Spring Hill College in 1954 and the parochial school system in 1964. As the Civil Rights Movement brought turbulence and violence to the State of Alabama, Toolen responded by condemning the activists’ methods, not their goals. This book is great for those who are interested in the Civil Rights Movement in America viewed from a different angle or anyone interested in the American South, the American Catholic Church, or race relations in the United States. |

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Jugendweihe (youth consecration) is a secular coming of age ceremony practiced by German 14 year olds. It originated among the secular societies in the 19th century as an alternative to Confirmation by the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. It was especially widespread in East Germany, where atheism was encouraged under the GDR, but has become less popular since German reunification. Today it is occasionally known as Jugendfeier (youth ceremony). The term Jugendweihe first appeared in 1852, to mark a new form of initiation developed by the secular movements, who developed a course of moral instruction for their children, founded on cultural history, as an alternative to Christian teachings. The concluding Jugendweihe was above all a ceremony to mark the child’s leaving school, and so was held at the age of 14. Since the 1890s the form of the ceremony has remained largely unchanged. The teacher makes a speech about the humanist worldview, the young person makes a pledge, and is given ‘pages of remembrance’ (Erinnerungsblätter) and a commemorative book. The ceremony is broken up |

”Cradles of culture, gardens of civilization”: Elementary schooling in Germany, 1900–1914. $49.99 This dissertation examines the elementary schools of late Imperial Germany as agents of socialization and “civilization” and arbiters of morals and manners, health and hygiene, that changed relations between the family, the community, and the state. Using the official regulations surrounding the schools, scholars have embedded the elementary school (Volksschule) in a master narrative of German history. This so-called Sonderweg neglects the lived experiences of the schools with all their attendant diversity, complexity, and conflict. Beginning inside the elementary school itself, this study argues that the impact of education was open ended and multifaceted. The state remained present and powerful at the Volksschule but schooling was also a social phenomenon, enmeshed in a web of shifting cultural and communal relations. Not only did government ministers determine educational policies and practices, so too did a variety of social groups as well as the Protestant and Catholic churches. There is no better indication of the diversity of German schools than the absence of a national education ministry before 1934.;This study takes an ethnographic approach to its subject, showing how the school’s rituals and rules, hierarchy of age and grade, splintering of information into separate subjects, and division of boys and girls, Protestants and Catholics, shaped the pupil’s ways of seeing and knowing. Focusing on Prussia and Saxony, it uses textbooks, lesson plans, the pedagogical press, didactic literature, memoirs, and school journals (Schukhroniken) to illustrate the ways in which the Volksschule and its teachers mediated ideas about the family, community, and the nation. Moral messages on cleanliness, thrift, punctuality, obedience, and order accompanied portraits of the Kaisers and patriotic texts. Pupils took field trips to local landmarks and celebrated the invented traditions of Sedan Day and the birthday of Wilhelm II. More than policies and prescriptions, the |

1513 Establishments: Nottingham High School, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Panam , Tournai $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Nottingham High School – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Dame Agnes Mellers founded Nottingham High School in 1513, after the death of her husband, Richard, partly in his memory, but also as an act of atonement for his several wrongdoings against the people of Nottingham. In order to do this she enlisted the help of Sir Thomas Lovell, who was both the Governor of Nottingham Castle and Secretary to the Treasury. As a result of their combined efforts, King Henry VIII sealed the schools foundation deed on the 22 November of that year. Since 1868, the school has been located high on Waverley Mount to the north of the city centre, looking down towards the site of its foundation in St Mary’s Church and its continuance in Stoney Street. There has subsequently been a long programme of building and development, resulting in the modern site. War Memorial InscriptionIn the Foundation Deed, Mellers provided that a Commemoration Service should be held in St Mary’s Church in the Lace Market “on the Feast of The Translation of St Richard of Chichester, namely 16 June” each year. With the exception of the Goose Fair, it is the most ancient ceremonial event still perpetuated in the City of Nottingham, and the oldest which is still largely in its original form (the Goose Fair is now a funfair rather than a livestock fair), although there seems to be no record of it being held between the middle of the sixteenth century and its modern revival in 1923. The formal procession is an important part of Founder’s Day and seeks to symbolise the ancient links the School has with the Crown, the City and the Church. The Foundation Deed also provides for the distribution (out of a total sum of 20 shillings) of certain moneys to the Lord Mayor, Vicar and others and for the… More: |

Chapters: Settlements Established in 1515, States and Territories Established in 1515, Havana, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Turin, Camagüey, Koch Dynasty, Phyang Monastery, Acla. Excerpt: Phyang Monastery Phyang Monastery , Phyang (or Phiyang) Gompa is a Buddhist monastery located just 15 or 16 kilometres west of Leh in Ladakh , northern India . It was established in 1515.History There are a couple of divergent traditions regarding its founding..”The site where the monastery now stands was once a part of the numerous monastic properties, offered during the time of Dharmaraja Jamyang Namgial to Chosje Damma Kunga. The hill of Phyang served as the venue of a monastery, known as Tashi Chozong, established in the year 1515. A monastic community was introduced to the monastery and with this started, the first establishment of the Digung teachings in Ladakh.” Others say that it was founded by king Tashi Namgyal , whose reign has been established from independent sources to have been in the third quarter of the sixteenth century. There are a number of chronological difficulties in establishing events in Ladakh at this period and it is assumed that some names have been omitted from the Chronicle either from mistakes in memory or tradition, or a deliberate attempt to eradicate some events which were thought better forgotten. The monastery is one of only two in Ladakh belonging to the Drikung Kagyu , Dri-gung-pa or Drigungpa school, one of eight schools derived from the teachings of Phakmadrupa Dorje Gyelpo (1110-1170 CE). After the monastery was built, it specialised in Digung teachings under Skyoba Jigsten Gonbo. The current head teacher is Apchi Choski Dolma and the reincarnation of Skyabje Toldan Rinpoche is the head lama. Description Phyang contains numerous sacred shrines |

Excerpt: Cranbrook School Cranbrook School is a co-educational boarding and day grammar school located in Cranbrook, Kent in South East England .Brief history Founded in 1518 for poor boys of the town, it received a charter from Queen Elizabeth I in 1574. Although in 1817 the town petitioned the Master of the Rolls, complaining boarders were favored over day boys, its complaints were rejected. By 1850 the Headmaster had converted the student body to boarders. A later conflict caused the school to lose many pupils and masters, nearly causing its closure near the end of the 19th century. In the early 20th century, the school began to receive state aid and made a tentative recovery. In the 1970s, Cranbrook School became coeducational and tripled its number of pupils. Selection is made of pupils at age thirteen. Boarding and day pupils come from a 6.2 mile-diameter catchment area. The school sponsors an annual Lenten Appeal, in which students raise money for a variety of charities. The current Headmistress is Mrs. Angela Daly.History Foundation The school was founded in 1518 by John Blubery, during the reign of King Henry VIII . A resident of Cranbrook, Blubery was a King’s armourer under Henry VII . He worked first at the armoury at Greenwich and later at the Tower of London . He was briefly imprisoned in the Tower, possibly for having taken concealed commissions. He owned an exceptionally high number of estates. Blubery’s crime was considered |

The link between the school and successive Archbishops of York has been continuous throughout the school’s history, and as recently as 2004, the Archbishop of York held the post of Chair of Governors for the school. The original grammar school was in Ogleforth near York Minster . In the 1800s it was referred to as “The Rev. Shackley’s School”, and James Cooke taught there. (See White’s Directory of York 1840 : Shackley Rev John (Bishop Holdgate’s Grammar School) Ogleforth .)In 1858 the school moved to Lord Mayor’s Walk (now occupied by York St John University ) in 1858, and moved again in 1963 to its present purpose-built home in Badger Hill, off Hull Road .Until 1985, it was an all-boys’ grammar school . With the reorganisation of education in York in 1985, the school changed its name to Archbishop Holgate’s School, and became a co-educational school. During this transition period the outdoor swimming pool was converted to an indoor pool, a new sports hall was built, and upgrades were made to music, design and technology, home economics and other facilities. The school’s facilities now include an indoor heated swimming pool , a chapel and a boathouse on the River Ouse . In 2009 a two-storey, curved-roof learning centre with landscaping, |

Excerpt: Christ Church Library.Christ Church Library is a Georgian building which forms the south side of Peckwater Quadrangle in Christ Church, Oxford , England. It houses the college’s modern lending library and early printed books on two floors. The first library at Christ Church was established in 1562 in what had been the refectory of St Frideswide’s Priory . The books, of which around 140 remain in the library, were originally chained to wooden lecterns.A new library was designed in the eighteenth century, with the intention of attracting aristocratic students to the college by equalling the great classical library buildings of Trinity College, Cambridge and Trinity College, Dublin . The most likely candidate for the architect is Dr George Clarke of All Souls ; the master mason was William Townsend or Townesend. Building work started in 1717 and was only completed in 1772.The books were housed on the first floor to avoid damp and flooding, while the ground floor was designed as an open loggia . However, a bequest of paintings from General John Guise during the protracted construction of the library led to the enclosure of the ground floor as a picture gallery (since moved to a separate, modernist, building). The front elevation and plan. The collections incorporate substantial bequests of books from, amongst others, Robert Burton ; Henry Aldrich , Dean of Christ Church; William |

Will High School Rankings Affect your Future?
With all the emphasis on mandatory testing and national standards it’s no big surprise that high school rankings have been getting a lot of attention. American high school students face a global economy, high technology demands, and the reality of living in a capitalistic society without the benefit of a solid financial education. Parents, teachers, and students look to high school rankings to help them evaluate their school’s progress and to consider moves to new areas.
Should Students Worry About High School Rankings for K-12 Gen Interest?
What if you are a high school student? Should you be concerned about getting into a good college if your school is poorly ranked in high school rankings for k-12 gen interest? Well yes and no. Most colleges aren’t going to bother digging up the high school ranking for k-12 gen interest for every student who applies. They simply don’t have the time. Your greater concern should be whether your school is really preparing you for the college if its ranking is that low. Even so- don’t despair. Attending a school with low high school rankings can work in your favor if you are a hard-working students who’s getting good grades. Focus less on the rankings and more on your personal achievements.
The Washington Post reported on an informal survey that found it made no difference to college acceptance whether students had attended private or public schools. I think it’s a fair correlation to surmise that your high school rankings will net similar results. Your chances of getting into a good college rest more on your personal merits than those of your school. Most colleges recognize that your school’s potential doesn’t reflect your personal potential.
Can I Use High school rankings to Get into a Better School?
If, despite my words of comfort above, you’re concerned about your school’s low high school ranking for k-12 gen interest you might be wondering about switching to a better school. On the one hand, it’s easy to access school info now that high school rankings are available on numerous websites and in national magazines. But before you run out the door, consider a few factors.
Switching schools isn’t easy. The private school route is expensive, even at the Catholic School option which runs thousands of dollars a year. Now your district may have charter or magnet schools that are reasonable alternatives to your current location. This is a good time to consult the high school rankings for k-12 gen interest. I’d advise against choosing a brand new charter school- you just don’t know what you’ll get. And you can only apply to most magnets at a certain time of the year. But if the high school rankings have you convinced that another school will better prepare you for college then consider your move carefully. You are still the most important factor in your success.
