The Catholic Comparative New Testament (Hardcover) $22.36 The history of Bible translation within the Catholic Church is characterized by a rich tradition of rendering the Scriptures into the language of the faith community. The CCNT features eight complete Catholic New Testaments that show the full range of expression for this central text of study, worship, prayer, and contemplation. A wide spectrum of people — including new and experienced Bible readers, homilists, and teachers — will gain from having this resource on their bookshelves. The Douay-Rheims, RSVCB, NRSVCB, and NAB are called formally equivalent translations (popularly referred to as "word-for-word" translations). This means that scholars rendered the New Testament`s original language into English that is as close as possible to its original wording. The result is a translation that is particularly valuable for careful analysis of the text. Meanwhile, the JB, GNB, NJB, and Christian Community Bible represent the "thought-for-thought" school of Bible translation (technically described as dynamic or functional equivalent). This method places the priority on the intended meaning of the original vocabulary, adapting it to English syntax and grammar. Such a translation tends to be easier to read and understand. The texts are conveniently displayed on facing pages (four translations per page), with the same set of verses on each one. The order in which the translations appear on the pages demonstrates a progression in translation philosophy from formal to functional equivalency. * New readers of the Bible will find answers to their search for an entry point to the confusing choices of Bible translations available today. * People familiar with any of these version will gain further insights by comparing translations new to them with those they have already studied. * Teachers will help their students discover new texts that will provoke their interest. * Homilists will find new renderings of familiar texts that deliver fresh insights to listen |

Invitation to the New Testament: A Catholic Approach to the Christian Scriptures $9.95 “More than merely a retelling of events, the New Testament was written for the purpose of evangelism — not journalism. With that in mind, author Alice Camille offers this enlightening and informative explanation of the New Testament from a Catholic viewpoint. Intended to give readers an appreciation for what compelled the early church to form the New Testament as we know it, this book covers the four gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, letters, and concludes with the Book of Revelation. Careful explanations bring readers into the world of the biblical scholar with language that is both inviting and accessible. Each chapter opens with an anecdote to draw readers in, and concludes with discussion questions for personal reflection or group use.” |

Encountering Jesus in the New Testament $24.95 “Encountering Jesus in the New Testament has been found in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Encountering Jesus in the New Testament helps students further their personal relationship with Jesus Christ by growing in understanding of Jesus’ historical, cultural, and religious background through an in-depth look at Scriptures. Answering the question, “Who is Jesus of Nazareth, the person people of faith call “Christ, the Son of God?,” is a central focus of the text. In answering this question, the students will explore how the New Testament scriptures provide us with an answer.” |

1 Peter $22 Identifying the theme of 1 Peter as how the church is to witness responsibly in a non-Christian world, Boring emphasizes the necessity of a sympathetic historical understanding of those parts of the letter that collide with modern cultural values and understandings of what Christian commitment and theology require. He gives special attention, as well, to the narrative world within which this ancient writer operated, and to the strong affirmation of ecumenism implicit in the letter’s amalgamation of traditions stemming from Peter and Paul, respectively. “Through the years, Professor Boring has shown himself to be a master of technical exegesis and theology wedded to great pastoral concern. These twin talents are fittingly brought to bear on a New Testament document that shows the same union of rich theology and pastoral care. Indeed, the sober, centrist, yet moving commentary squares perfectly with the sober, centrist, yet moving document that is 1 Peter. If this commentary is a popularization, then it is a popularization of very high caliber; a tremendous amount of research and insight is made available and intelligible to a wide public. This commentary is not just a rehash of what everyone else has said on 1 Peter. The innovative appendix detailing the narrative world of 1 Peter is alone worth the price of admission. All in all, an excellent contribution to present-day literature on an often neglected book of the New Testament.” –John P. Meier, The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. |

101 Questions and Answers on the Four Last Things $12.95 Joseph Kelley has written a short, accessible, thorough introduction to, and overview of, Christian teaching on death, judgment, hell and heaven, called in theology the four last things. Presented in the popular 101 Questions format, this book shows how these four topics, also referred to as Christian eschatology, have their ancient roots in the sacred books of the Hebrew Scriptures, especially in the later writings known as apocalyptic literature. The New Testament receives and builds upon Jewish thought and piety, finding in Jesus Christ a new revelation about the meaning of death, the nature of judgment, and God’s desire that all be saved and united through Christ in heaven. Kelley clearly presents the major theological ideas about the four last things that have emerged in Christian history, as well as the sacramental and pastoral practices surrounding death. This one-step guide to Catholic teaching on death, judgment, heaven, and hell is a one-of-a-kind book and will make informative, fascinating reading. |

Excerpt: The Biblia Polyglotta (also called the Biblia Regia ) was printed between 1568 and 1573 by the printer Christoffel Plantijn in his printing house in Antwerp (now Belgium ).Plantin was suspected of Calvinist sympathies, although Antwerp at that time was firmly Catholic . He developed a plan to prove his loyalty to the Catholic king Philip II of Spain by producing a version of the Bible in five languages. The king financed the plan and sent the Spanish theologian Benito Arias Montano to Antwerp to watch over the production of this eight-volume masterpiece of printing, which was printed in 1100 copies. The first four volumes contain the Old Testament . The left page has two columns with the Hebrew original and the Latin translation, the right page has same text in Greek with its own Latin translation. Underneath these columns there is a Aramaic version on the left-hand page and a Latin translation of this on the right-hand side. For printing the Hebrew text Plantin used among others Daniel Bomberg ‘s Hebrew type, which he had received from Bomberg’s nephews. Volume 5 contains the New Testament in Greek and Syriac , each with a Latin translation, and a translation of the Syriac into Hebrew. Volume 6 has the complete Bible in the original Hebrew and Greek, as well as an interlinear version that has the Latin translation printed between the lines. The last two volumes contain dictionaries (Hebrew-Latin, Greek-Latin, Syriac-Aramaic, grammar rules, list of names, etc.) that were of value to scholars.A complete copy of this Bible is on display at the Plantin-Moretus Museum (the site of the original printing press), including the typefaces which were designed for this project.Sources Notes A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The Modena Triptych is 1568 triptych (three panel |

Excerpt: Simon Peter (Greek: , Pétros, “stone, rock”; c. 1 BC AD 67), sometimes called Simon Cephas (Greek: , Symn Kphas; Aramaic: ; Syriac: , Sëmn Kêfâ) after his name in Hellenized Aramaic, was a leader of the early Christian Church, who is featured prominently in the New Testament Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. Peter was the son of John or of Jonah, and was from the village of Bethsaida in the province of Galilee. His brother Andrew was also an apostle. Simon Peter is venerated in multiple churches and regarded as the first Pope by the Roman Catholic Church. After working to establish the church of Antioch for seven years presiding as the city’s bishop and preaching to the ones who were scattered (i.e., Jews and Hebrew Christians.), in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia Minor and Bithynia, Peter went to Rome. In the second year of Claudius, it is claimed, he overthrew Simon Magus, and held the Sacerdotal Chair for 25 years. At the hand of Nero, |

2nd-Century Historical Documents: 2nd-Century Christian Texts, Gospel of James, Diatessaron, Didache, Clementine Literature $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: 2nd-Century Christian Texts, Gospel of James, Diatessaron, Didache, Clementine Literature, the Shepherd of Hermas, on the Detection and Overthrow of the So-Called Gnosis, Epistles of Clement, Apology of Aristides, Apocalypse of Peter, Gospel of Truth, Inscription of Abercius, Apocryphon of John, Apocryphon of James, Epistle to Diognetus, Acts of Peter. Excerpt: The Didache (pronounced ; Koine Greek: , Didach “Teaching”; Modern Greek ) is the common name of a brief early Christian treatise (dated by most scholars to the late first/early second century). The Didache of the Twelve Apostles had been written and widely disseminated by about the year 100, and became increasingly important in the second and third Christian centuries. It is an anonymous work not belonging to any single individual, and a pastoral manual “that reveals more about how Jewish-Christians saw themselves and how they adapted their Judaism for gentiles than any other book in the Christian Scriptures.” The text, parts of which may have constituted the first written catechism, has three main sections dealing with Christian lessons, rituals such as baptism and eucharist, and Church organization. It was considered by some of the Church Fathers as part of the New Testament but rejected as spurious or non-canonical by others, eventually not accepted into the New Testament canon with the exception of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church “broader canon” which includes the Didascalia which is based on the Didache. The Catholic Church has accepted it as part of the collection of Apostolic Fathers. In 1886, soon after the Didache was first published, and some sixty years before the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls and Nag Hammadi Codices, Scottish Professor M. D. Riddle commented: “Bryennios… More: |

A Body Broken for Broken People : Eucharist in the New Testament, Revised Edition $2.94 Roman Catholic exegete Francis J. Maloney in a study of the biblical passages and social context of the Eucharist raises the question as to whether prohibiting participation of faltering members meets the spirit of Christ’s intent. |
|
|
A Body Broken for a Broken People: Eucharist in the New Testament $16.61 "Here we have a Catholic exegete, on the basis of a close analysis of the New Testament texts, challenging his church to a reexamination of its disciplinary tradition: if the meal practice of Jesus embodied a never-failing presence of the Lord to his ever-failing disciples, then should not the church think twice before excluding faltering members from communion? Moloney’s stimulating study gives food for thought even to Protestants who may consider that their own communion discipline has relaxed to the point of disappearance. In any case, this book makes a significant contribution to reflection on the ways to hold together the divine generosity in forgiveness, the call of sinners to repentance, and the responsibility of the church as beneficiary, messenger, and steward of the gospel."–Geoffrey Wainwright, Robert Earl Cushman Professor of Christian Theology, Duke University |

A Brief Declaration of the Sacraments $0.99 William Tyndale (sometimes spelled Tindall or Tyndall; pronounced /ˈtɪndəl/) (c. 1494 – 1536) was a 16th-century Protestant reformer and scholar who, influenced by the work of Desiderius Erasmus and Martin Luther, translated considerable parts of the Bible into the Early Modern English of his day. While a number of partial and complete Old English translations had been made from the seventh century onward, and Middle English translations particularly during the 14th century, Tyndale’s was the first English translation to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, and the first to take advantage of the new medium of print, which allowed for its wide distribution. In 1535, Tyndale was arrested, jailed in the castle of Vilvoorde outside Brussels for over a year, tried for heresy and burned at the stake. He was strangled before his body was burnt by some people who associated themselves with the Roman Catholic Church.Much of Tyndale’s work eventually found its way into the King James Version (or “Authorised Version”) of the Bible, published in 1611, which, as the work of 54 independent scholars revising the existing English versions, drew significantly on Tyndale’s translations. The King James Version New Testament is 83.7 per cent Tyndale’s work, with the KJV Old Testament 75.7 per cent Tyndale’s.Whereas John Wycliffe had earlier produced an English translation of the Bible from Latin, Tyndale was the first to translate from the original Greek language. This was only made possible after Erasmus made the Greek New Testament available in Europe. |

A Brilliant Deceit and Other Essays $14.19 A noted biblical scholar argues that the resurrection of Jesus was a hoax. In the first part of A Brilliant Deceit and Other Essays, author L.M. Barré offers fresh evidence to support a thesis put forward by the famous New Testament scholar Hermann Samuel Reimarus (1694-1768) that the disciples of Jesus perpetrated a resurrection hoax. That evidence is presented in a series of short essays that contain references to overlapping observations made by Reimarus. The second part of the book isolates socio-religious trajectories in ancient Israelite religion. Dr. Barré’s fundamental findings challenge the widespread notion that ancient Israel was a homogeneous culture united under the worship of the high god Yahweh Sabaoth. Instead, he argues that the Old Testament traditions are not the product of one people but two, originally and distinctly worshipping the high gods El and Yahweh. Author Biography: Dr. Barré received his doctorate in religion from Vanderbilt University in 1986. His writings have been published in such scholarly journals as the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, Vetus Testamentum, Zeitschrift für die alttestamentlische Wissenschaft, the Journal for the Study of the Old Testament, and the Mercer Dictionary of the Bible. Dr. Barré has taught at Vanderbilt University and at the Southern Methodist University. He recently received an editorial nomination for inclusion in the 56th edition of Who’s Who in America. |

A Daring Game $11 In 1837 George Borrow, the brilliant polyglot and future author of best-sellers, arrived in Madrid as agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society with the assignment to print and distribute a Protestant version of the New Testament in a staunchly Catholic land. In the first months of the year he saw through to press an edition of no fewer than 5,000 copies. Then he spent the next three years selling the book, against tremendous opposition from the Catholic Church and hostile conservative authorities, in all the nooks and corners of the land, to all classes of Spanish society, in big cities and in tiny villages. Thrice imprisoned, a dozen times nearly killed by bandits, firing-squad, disease or accident, Borrow persisted where saner men would soon have yielded. When at last he returned to England, the greater part of his ‘Scio New Testament’ had been duly sold to noblemen, donkey-drivers and jailbirds, to ‘muleteers, carmen, and contrabandistas’, to city bourgeois and intellectuals craving for a look at Europe’s most fundamental text. A Daring Game does not repeat the whole story of Borrow’s adventures as told in his sensational 1843 travelogue ‘The Bible in Spain’. Instead, it investigates the conditions and circumstances under which Borrow’s New Testament was produced and distributed, and for the first time in two centuries calculates the exact numbers of sales attained by a bookseller of genius in a land plagued by war, pestilence, ignorance and hatred. |

A Dynamic God Large Print Edition: Living an Unconventional Catholic Faith $27.95 When Nancy Mairs published her spiritual autobiography Ordinary Time, Kathleen Norris greeted it in the New York Times Book Review as “a remarkable accomplishment,” calling Mairs “a relentlessly physical writer, as fiercely committed to her art as to her spiritual development.” A Dynamic God is Mairs’s return to the subjects of religion and spirituality—a passionately individual book of meditations on a life of engaged faith. “A Dynamic God owes its power to Mairs’s sensitivity, her attention to detail, her honesty about herself. Wheelchair-bound with multiple sclerosis, she is increasingly unable to take care of herself. Throughout the essays here, she touches on these and other issues to get at not just the roots of her progressive Catholicism—Dorothy Day is a favorite role model—but the nature of faith in a world where it often doesn’t seem to be rewarded, where ‘most of us face, from time to time, more than we can handle.’” —David Ulin, Los Angeles Times “An eloquent and witty account of a spiritual quest to find the holy within and without. It suggests a way back to the sacred for Catholics of all varieties.” —Margaret Regan, Tucson Weekly“For those struggling with contradictions between organized religion and their personal beliefs, this testament to living an intimately unique brand of Catholicism will be welcome reading.” —Booklist“Mairs is an extraordinary woman . . . able to write with passion about a God that others in her position would have walked away from a long time ago . . . Her self-deprecating humor iswonderful—much like the writing of Anne Lamott, although Mairs manages to create her own style.” —Publishers Weekly“Early in the book, the author states that her intent is to throw wide the door for the Holy One to enter. She has done that and much |

A Mery Dialogue Declaringe the Properties of Shrowde Shrews and Honest Wives (Dodo Press) $11.88 Gerrit Gerritzoons (1466 or 1469 – 1536) was a Dutch humanist and theologian. He wrote under the pseudonym Desiderius Erasmus and was sometimes known as Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam. He was a classical scholar who wrote in a pure Latin style. Although he remained a Roman Catholic throughout his lifetime, he was critical of what he considered the excesses of the Roman Catholic Church. Using humanist techniques he prepared important new Latin and Greek editions of the New Testament which exposed inaccuracies and raised questions that would be influential in the Reformation. He also wrote The Praise of Folly, Handbook of a Christian Knight, On Civility in Children, The Colloquies of Erasmus which appeared at intervals from 1500 on and many other works. |

The Catholic Bible, Revised Edition
Revised Standard Version Bible, Catholic Edition – also known as Rsv Catholic Bible or the Catholic Bible Ignatius.
What is the Revised Standard Version Catholic Bible for beginners?
Revised Standard Version – Catholic Edition is often called "title = RV" Bible "> KJV Bible or the Catholic Bible RSV or RSV-CE (Catholic Edition). RV-EC the title is more accurate because it is a non-Catholic KJV Bible. Also referred to as title = "Ignatius Catholic Bible"> Ignatius Catholic Bible, because the RSV-CE has been available for a short period in the 1990s revived Ignatius Press printing of this translation. It is now also printed by other publishers and Ignacio.
The RV-EC is the Revised Standard Catholic Edition. The RSV translation is a joint project between Catholics and non Catholics, starting in the 1940s. Catholic Edition was officially released in 1965, and an updated version was published in 2006. (The New Revised Standard Version was published in 1989, which will be discussed later.) The basic text of this translation is as follows: the New Testament: Correspondence old editions the Novum Testamentum Graeca (the Latin name of the Greek New Testament). OT: Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (Masoretic Hebrew text of the Jewish Bible), Targum (translation Aramaic of the Bible in Hebrew), the Vulgate, with an influence of the Septuagint (Koine Greek version of the Hebrew Bible). Deuterocanonical: Septuagint with Vulgate (Latin Bible fifth century) influence.
The KJV Bible is what is called a formal equivalent translation. This can also be called a literal word or "word" translation. This means that the original Hebrew and Greek writings have been translated into English, the word literally as possible or phrasing. This allows a clear and transparent reading the original text. (This method of conversion is rather the "thought of thought" translation, which focuses on the priority of meaning vocabulary of origin. "Thinking thinking" is a popular method for Bibles in English designed to be easy to understand, especially for those with English as a second language. Examples include the right translation News). The advantage of the literal translation official or the equivalent is the version that is in English from the original words used in ancient writings, and therefore has no opportunity translators, consciously or not, their interpretations and translations in casting thoughts. What is the difference between the RSV and NIV?
There are two available versions of the approved Catholic Bible KJV, RSV-Catholic Edition (1965 edition) and RSV Second Catholic Edition (2006). Although briefly available in the 1990s, two editions are in print. The Catholic Rsv Second Edition has made some changes and added the notes of Liturgiam Authenticam, composition and new features and maps. The main difference between the RSV-CE and the second Catholic edition is an updated day of some of the more archaic language.
Neither RSV-CE or RSV-Catholic Edition to be confused with the Standard Edition (NIV). The New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition, which was published in 1989, first received approval from the National Conference of Catholic Bishops of Canada and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in 1991. In addition to the inclusion of the Deuterocanonical books, no difference in the New Revised Standard Version, and Nrsv Catholic Edition.
Yet it was rejected by the Vatican, as published in Catholic News Service, who reported that The Vatican has rejected the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible for use in the liturgy and catechesis texts after officials found flaws in the doctrine of the use of inclusive language. "
Inclusive language included changes as a Cor 1:11 p.m. when the expression Paul told him "when I became a man, I gave way to children," was changed to "when I became an adult …" or no Daniel 7:13, where the NIV says: "As we saw in the vision of the night, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven" in instead of the original "came like a Son of man …"
This kind of "neutralizing" writing the movement beyond simply adding "and sisters" at an address that uses the word "brothers." The translation replaces the current text, and therefore meaning of original texts, and make mistranslates changes and aspects of the Catholic Faith and heritage.
