The Catholic Comparative New Testament (Hardcover) $22.36 The history of Bible translation within the Catholic Church is characterized by a rich tradition of rendering the Scriptures into the language of the faith community. The CCNT features eight complete Catholic New Testaments that show the full range of expression for this central text of study, worship, prayer, and contemplation. A wide spectrum of people — including new and experienced Bible readers, homilists, and teachers — will gain from having this resource on their bookshelves. The Douay-Rheims, RSVCB, NRSVCB, and NAB are called formally equivalent translations (popularly referred to as "word-for-word" translations). This means that scholars rendered the New Testament`s original language into English that is as close as possible to its original wording. The result is a translation that is particularly valuable for careful analysis of the text. Meanwhile, the JB, GNB, NJB, and Christian Community Bible represent the "thought-for-thought" school of Bible translation (technically described as dynamic or functional equivalent). This method places the priority on the intended meaning of the original vocabulary, adapting it to English syntax and grammar. Such a translation tends to be easier to read and understand. The texts are conveniently displayed on facing pages (four translations per page), with the same set of verses on each one. The order in which the translations appear on the pages demonstrates a progression in translation philosophy from formal to functional equivalency. * New readers of the Bible will find answers to their search for an entry point to the confusing choices of Bible translations available today. * People familiar with any of these version will gain further insights by comparing translations new to them with those they have already studied. * Teachers will help their students discover new texts that will provoke their interest. * Homilists will find new renderings of familiar texts that deliver fresh insights to listen |

Excerpt: The Biblia Polyglotta (also called the Biblia Regia ) was printed between 1568 and 1573 by the printer Christoffel Plantijn in his printing house in Antwerp (now Belgium ).Plantin was suspected of Calvinist sympathies, although Antwerp at that time was firmly Catholic . He developed a plan to prove his loyalty to the Catholic king Philip II of Spain by producing a version of the Bible in five languages. The king financed the plan and sent the Spanish theologian Benito Arias Montano to Antwerp to watch over the production of this eight-volume masterpiece of printing, which was printed in 1100 copies. The first four volumes contain the Old Testament . The left page has two columns with the Hebrew original and the Latin translation, the right page has same text in Greek with its own Latin translation. Underneath these columns there is a Aramaic version on the left-hand page and a Latin translation of this on the right-hand side. For printing the Hebrew text Plantin used among others Daniel Bomberg ‘s Hebrew type, which he had received from Bomberg’s nephews. Volume 5 contains the New Testament in Greek and Syriac , each with a Latin translation, and a translation of the Syriac into Hebrew. Volume 6 has the complete Bible in the original Hebrew and Greek, as well as an interlinear version that has the Latin translation printed between the lines. The last two volumes contain dictionaries (Hebrew-Latin, Greek-Latin, Syriac-Aramaic, grammar rules, list of names, etc.) that were of value to scholars.A complete copy of this Bible is on display at the Plantin-Moretus Museum (the site of the original printing press), including the typefaces which were designed for this project.Sources Notes A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The Modena Triptych is 1568 triptych (three panel |

A Brief Declaration of the Sacraments $0.99 William Tyndale (sometimes spelled Tindall or Tyndall; pronounced /ˈtɪndəl/) (c. 1494 – 1536) was a 16th-century Protestant reformer and scholar who, influenced by the work of Desiderius Erasmus and Martin Luther, translated considerable parts of the Bible into the Early Modern English of his day. While a number of partial and complete Old English translations had been made from the seventh century onward, and Middle English translations particularly during the 14th century, Tyndale’s was the first English translation to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, and the first to take advantage of the new medium of print, which allowed for its wide distribution. In 1535, Tyndale was arrested, jailed in the castle of Vilvoorde outside Brussels for over a year, tried for heresy and burned at the stake. He was strangled before his body was burnt by some people who associated themselves with the Roman Catholic Church.Much of Tyndale’s work eventually found its way into the King James Version (or “Authorised Version”) of the Bible, published in 1611, which, as the work of 54 independent scholars revising the existing English versions, drew significantly on Tyndale’s translations. The King James Version New Testament is 83.7 per cent Tyndale’s work, with the KJV Old Testament 75.7 per cent Tyndale’s.Whereas John Wycliffe had earlier produced an English translation of the Bible from Latin, Tyndale was the first to translate from the original Greek language. This was only made possible after Erasmus made the Greek New Testament available in Europe. |

A Brilliant Deceit and Other Essays $14.19 A noted biblical scholar argues that the resurrection of Jesus was a hoax. In the first part of A Brilliant Deceit and Other Essays, author L.M. Barré offers fresh evidence to support a thesis put forward by the famous New Testament scholar Hermann Samuel Reimarus (1694-1768) that the disciples of Jesus perpetrated a resurrection hoax. That evidence is presented in a series of short essays that contain references to overlapping observations made by Reimarus. The second part of the book isolates socio-religious trajectories in ancient Israelite religion. Dr. Barré’s fundamental findings challenge the widespread notion that ancient Israel was a homogeneous culture united under the worship of the high god Yahweh Sabaoth. Instead, he argues that the Old Testament traditions are not the product of one people but two, originally and distinctly worshipping the high gods El and Yahweh. Author Biography: Dr. Barré received his doctorate in religion from Vanderbilt University in 1986. His writings have been published in such scholarly journals as the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, Vetus Testamentum, Zeitschrift für die alttestamentlische Wissenschaft, the Journal for the Study of the Old Testament, and the Mercer Dictionary of the Bible. Dr. Barré has taught at Vanderbilt University and at the Southern Methodist University. He recently received an editorial nomination for inclusion in the 56th edition of Who’s Who in America. |

A Daring Game $11 In 1837 George Borrow, the brilliant polyglot and future author of best-sellers, arrived in Madrid as agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society with the assignment to print and distribute a Protestant version of the New Testament in a staunchly Catholic land. In the first months of the year he saw through to press an edition of no fewer than 5,000 copies. Then he spent the next three years selling the book, against tremendous opposition from the Catholic Church and hostile conservative authorities, in all the nooks and corners of the land, to all classes of Spanish society, in big cities and in tiny villages. Thrice imprisoned, a dozen times nearly killed by bandits, firing-squad, disease or accident, Borrow persisted where saner men would soon have yielded. When at last he returned to England, the greater part of his ‘Scio New Testament’ had been duly sold to noblemen, donkey-drivers and jailbirds, to ‘muleteers, carmen, and contrabandistas’, to city bourgeois and intellectuals craving for a look at Europe’s most fundamental text. A Daring Game does not repeat the whole story of Borrow’s adventures as told in his sensational 1843 travelogue ‘The Bible in Spain’. Instead, it investigates the conditions and circumstances under which Borrow’s New Testament was produced and distributed, and for the first time in two centuries calculates the exact numbers of sales attained by a bookseller of genius in a land plagued by war, pestilence, ignorance and hatred. |

Many persons have assumed, owing to the absence of any intervention on the part of the Roman governor in the condemnation of Stephen, that his murder must have taken place while the office of procurator was vacant, i.e. between the deposition of Pilate and the arrival of his successor. If so, the entire interval would be about six years; but our information is too scanty to enable us to assume this as positively certain. At any rate the period cannot have been longer. CHAPTER VI. ITS DOCTRINAL DEVELOPMENT DURING THE SAME PERIOD. IJAVING narrated the general facts of the history, I must now consider the development of Christian doctrine during this period, and the gradual emergence of Catholic Christianity out of Judaism. To enable us to form a correct opinion on this subject, it will be necessary for us to revert to that state of thought and feeling which must have existed before a single line of the New Testament was composed. Our sole materials for estimating its character are the addresses of St. Peter, the narrative in the Acts, a few intimations in the Gospels, and the Messianic portions of the Old Testament Scriptures. We must keep strongly in our recollection while considering this subject that at this period the Old Testament was the sole Bible of the converts, and that all that they knew about Christianity must have been derived from oral instruction, or the reminiscences which any of them might have possessed of the |

Bible In English $50.94 How did the Bible get translated into English and made available to English-speaking people? ” The Bible in English” tells the dramatic story of these events, and of the human costs involved. In this concise yet thorough study, John Long answers the above questions, exploring the lives and deaths of John Wycliffe and William Tyndale and explaining their roles in translating the Latin Vulgate and the New Testament, respectively. Long discusses the Roman Catholic Church’s resistance to translation of the scriptures from Latin into English and other languages, and he shows which parts of Tyndale’s translation endured to appear in the King James, Revised Standard, American Standard, New American Standards, New King James, and other translations of the Bible in English. This easy-to-read, comprehensive book is a fascinating study of a dramatic time in the Bible’s history.Author Biography: John D. Long is Arthur M. Weimer Professor Emeritus of Business Administration at the School of Business, Indiana University. |

Bible Wisdom $15.49 How many Psalms are there in the Bible? Nobody knows. Psalms are scattered all through the Old Testament, but this new translation is concerned only with the Psalms in the Biblical book of that title. Even here, however, the actual number is uncertain. Some Psalms have been duplicated, some have been joined together, others split apart. Most Bibles number the Psalms from 1 to 150. Which numbers correspond to which Psalms, however, differs from Protestant to Catholic and Orthodox versions. For easy reference, both numbers are used in this book. Disregarding duplications and material that fails to qualify as either powerful or praiseworthy, 84 uplifting Psalms are given new life and meaning in this inspired and inspiring translation from the ancient Greek Old Testament, the Septuagint. Neither the original meaning nor the poetry is lost or diluted, for each selected Psalm is rendered in both a literal translation and a more poetic paraphrase. |
