The Moon Is Blue [VHS]

$14.98

More famous as a controversy than a movie, The Moon Is Blue (1953) marked a turning point in the history of frankness in American film. Because producer-director Otto Preminger owned the rights to the hit Broadway play, he stubbornly refused to change the racy dialogue in the script. The offending words included such end-of-western-civilization-as-we-know-it terms as “virgin” and “pregnant.” The P…

A cult phenomenon returns with The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day. “For more than three decades the Catholic Church through its Legion of Decency controlled the content of Hollywood films. Studios submitted their films to the Legion for a rating, which varied from general approval to condemnation. Documenting the inner workings of the Legion, The Catholic Crusade Against the Movies examines how the Church acquired such control and how the changes in the movie industry and American society at large in the post-World War II era eventually conspired against that institution’s power and led to its demise.”

Catholics in the Movies (Paperback)

Catholics in the Movies (Paperback)

$24.75

Catholicism was all over movie screens in 2004. Mel Gibson`s The Passion of the Christ was at the center of a media firestorm for months. A priest was a crucial character in the Academy Award-winning Million Dollar Baby. Everyone, it seemed, was talking about how religious stories should be represented, marketed, and received. Catholic characters, spaces, and rituals have been stock features in popular films since the silent era. An intensely visual religion with a well-defined ritual and authority system, Catholicism lends itself to the drama and pageantry of film. Moviegoers watch as Catholic visionaries interact with the supernatural, priests counsel their flocks, reformers fight for social justice, and bishops wield authoritarian power. Rather than being marginal to American popular culture, Catholic people, places, and rituals are all central to the world of the movie. Catholics in the Movies begins with an introductory essay that orients readers to the ways that films appear in culture and describes the broad trends that can be seen in the movies` hundred-year history of representing Catholics. Each chapter is written by a noted scholar of American religion who concentrates on one movie engaging important historical, artistic, and religious issues. Each then places the film within American cultural and social history, discusses the film as an expression of Catholic concerns of the period, and relates the film to others of its genre. Tracing the story of American Catholic history through popular films, Catholics in the Movies should be a valuable resource for anyone interested in American Catholicism and religion and film.

Excerpt: The history of cinema in Quebec started on June 27, 1896 when the French Louis Minier inaugurated the first movie projection in North America in a Montreal theatre room. However, it would have to wait until the 1960s before a genuine Quebec cinema industry would emerge. Approximately 620 feature length films have been produced, or partially produced by the Quebec film industry since 1943. Due to language and cultural differences between the predominantly francophone population of Quebec and the predominantly anglophone population of the rest of Canada, Quebec’s film industry is commonly regarded as a distinct entity from its English Canadian counterpart. In addition to participating in Canada’s national Genie Awards, the Quebec film industry also maintains its own awards ceremony, the Jutra Awards. In addition, the popularity of homegrown French language films among Quebec audiences, as opposed to English Canadians’ preference for Hollywood films, means that Quebec films are often more successful at the box office than English Canadian films in fact, the top-grossing Canadian film of the year is often a French language film from Quebec. From the 1896 to the 1960s, the Catholic clergy tried to control what movies Quebecers could see. Two methods were employed: censorship and prohibition of attendance by children under 16. In 1913, the Bureau de censure de vues animées (Office of censorship for motion pictures) began regulating the projection of movies in Quebec. In 1927, the Laurier-Palace theatre burned down, killing many children. The church then almost succeeded at closing down all projection rooms in the province. However, the Parliament of Quebec passed a law preventing only children under 16 from attending movie projections. This law wou… More:

Betty Hutton was the top grossing female star at Paramount during much of the 1940s. At the top of her career, she was one of the most celebrated actresses in Hollywood, starring in such movies as “Annie Get Your Gun” and “The Greatest Show On Earth”. Without warning, her career and world collapsed virtually overnight. Betty’s tumultuous childhood came back to haunt her, and along with it, an addiction to prescription pills that almost ended her life. Betty disappeared from the public eye, until in 1974, when she was discovered living with and caring for Priests in a Catholic Rectory in Rhode Island. Interest in her and her life returned to the forefront. She began writing this book in 1970, as a means to explain the chain of events that led to her downfall. Sadly, she never finished writing it. After her death in 2007, the Betty Hutton Estate picked up where she left off, and has finally completed her book. Almost 40 years after it was first started, Betty’s real story is ready to be told! Includes 70 photos

In the story, a drag performer known as Zahara (also played by Bernal) attempts to blackmail a predatory priest by exposing their scandalous past. The tale provides the inspiration for Enrique s next film. But when the villainous priest from their school days arrives on to tell his own version of the events, the truth is wilder than anything anyone could have imagined. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone raves, Gael Garcia Bernal is dynamite! and calls the film a rapturous masterwork!

Filmmaker John Jeffcoat takes an unanticipated, and often endearing look at all that is Bingo! from welfare recipients to drag queens and the Catholic Church–in all it’s gaudy, bawdy, and grandly humorous. Filmed on location throughout the United States, Europe and even on a floating Carnival Cruise Bingo Ship in the Caribbean, the film reveals all that lies below the gloss of American kitsch: an unexpected subculture of eccentric and tightly-knit people for whom hope truly springs eternal.

When a young college professor (Lino Capolicchio of House With Laughing Windows) returns home to visit his Catholic priest brother (Craig Hill), prominent members of the community begin to be stalked and slaughtered by an unknown killer. Can the brothers uncover the identity of this deranged fiend, even while they are being tortured by their own nightmares of an unspeakable childhood trauma? Directed by Antonio Bido (Watch Me When I Kill) and known in Italy as Solamente Nero, this suspenseful 1978 giallo co-stars Stefania Casini (Suspira) and features one of the last scores performed by the legendary band Goblin (Suspira, Deep Red). The word giallo (yellow) refers to the controversial series of savage Italian suspense thrillers that shocked international audiences throughout the 60s and 70s. The Giallo Collection presents these rarely seen classics fully restored from original vault elements and filled with all the explicit sex, graphic violence and startling twist endings that have come to define this brutal, stylish genre.

Christian Morality and Justice Catechist Guide

Through the Ten Commandments, God provides us with moral principles for living in right relationship with God and with one another. Christian Morality and Justice Catechist’s Guide contains ten sessions to help young adolescents understand these basic moral principles and explore how we apply them to the choices we make every day. The basic activities form 60-minute sessions and have optional session extensions that make it easy to plan longer sessions. Seven of the sessions connect directly to The Catholic Connections Handbook for Middle Schoolers (Saint Mary’s Press, 2009) and cover basic teachings about Christian morality based on the Ten Commandments. Two sessions apply these basic moral principles to the topics of money and technology. The concluding session asks the young people to make God’s goal for their lives their own personal life goal. The guide also includes an optional project on movies and moral choices.
