Altars Restored: The Changing Face of English Religious Worship, 1547-c.1700 $180 Altars are powerful symbols, fraught with meaning, but during the early modern period they became a religious battleground. Attacked by reformers in the mid-sixteenth century because of their allegedly idolatrous associations with the Catholic sacrifice of the mass, a hundred years later they served to divide Protestants due to their re-introduction by Archbishop Laud and his associates as part of a counter-reforming program. Moreover, having subsequently been removed by the victorious puritans, they gradually came back after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. This book explores these developments, over a 150 year period, and recaptures the experience of the ordinary parishioner in this crucial period of religious change. Far from being the passive recipients of changes imposed from above, the laity are revealed as actively engaged from the early days of the Reformation, as zealous iconoclasts or their Catholic opponents — a division later translated into competing protestant views.Altars Restored integrates the worlds of theological debate, church politics and government, and parish practice and belief, which are often studied in isolation from one another. It draws from hitherto largely untapped sources, notably the surviving artefactual evidence comprising communion tables and rails, fonts, images in stained glass, paintings and plates, and examines the riches of local parish records — especially churchwardens’ accounts. The result is a richly textured study of religious change at both local and national level. |

Come Rack Come Rope $6.95 Set in Derbyshire, England, at the time when “Queen Elizabeth I” was persecuting Catholics, when being or harboring a priest was considered treason, and was punishable with death, it tells the story of two young lovers who give up their chance of happiness together, choosing instead to face imprisonment and martyrdom, so that “God’s will” may be done. It is perhaps the best known of Benson’s novels. The book was written nearly nine years after Benson’s reception into the Catholic Church. The inspiration for the story comes from Dom Bede Camm’s account of the recusant Fitzherbert family in Forgotten Shrines (1910), and from Benson’s own visit in 1911 to Padley, home of the Fitzherberts, a scene for part of the novel, in order to preach at the annual pilgrimage there. The title of the book is taken from a letter of Saint Edmund Campion, in which, after torture, he assured Catholics that he had revealed “no things of secret, nor would he, come rack, come rope.” Most of the characters in the book are historical people; only the hero and heroine, their parents, and some minor characters are fictional.Robin Audrey and Marjorie Manners, both aged seventeen, are secretly engaged. They both come from recusant Catholic families in Derbyshire, but she is the more devout of the two. Robin’s mother died when he was about seven, and his father has continued to practice the Catholic faith, despite having to pay heavy fines for refusing to attend services in the established Church of England. The two families meet several times a year, when Mass is being secretly offered by a priest. The story begins when Robin visits his fiancée and tells her that his father has announced that he can no longer tolerate the persecution and fines, that he will take the bread and wine in the Anglican church at Easter, and that Robin must do the same. Marjorie advises her lover to leave the area for Easter, so that his father will have time to accept that his son will |

Excerpt: Saint Adelheid of Willich For another Saint Adelaide, see Adelaide of Italy Adelaide, Abbess of Villich. Sheet for Pilgrims Adelaide, Abbess of Villich (Adelheid of Villich) (c. 970 February 5 O.S. , 1015) was a daughter of Megingoz des Brunharingen, Count of Guelders , and Gerberga of Metzgau, a granddaughter of Charles the Simple , king of the West Franks . When still very young she entered the convent of St Ursula , Our Lady of the Capitol, founded by her parents in Cologne , where the Rule of St Jerome was followed. About 980, her parents founded the convent of Villich, supported by a manor at the confluence of the Rhine and the Sieg , opposite the city of Bonn , on the site of a Frankish cemetery and what appears to have been a proprietary church, modern archeology has revealed. Adelaide was “redeemed” from the convent by exchange with a parcel of land and became abbess of this new convent, initially established as an unusually late example of a community of canonesses . Canons were attached to the convent in order that Mass might be said. After the death of Gerberga, Adelaide introduced the stricter Benedictine rule . She insisted that the nuns under her care learn to read Latin , that they might understand the Mass. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia “the fame of her sanctity and of her gift of working miracles soon attracted the attention of Saint Heribert , Archbishop of Cologne “, who could scarcely have ignored an abbess of her high Carolingian and Ottonian |
