Bahala Na Ang Dios (Leave it to God) $62.27 This book investigates the role that the Roman Catholic church has played in the socialization of Filipinos in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The research is based on scholarly acknowledgement of the important place of social institutions-such as churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and other places for religious and faith-based gatherings-in the settlement and integration experiences of immigrants. Roman Catholicism, first introduced into the Philippines via Spanish colonization, has become an important marker of identity for many Filipinos and has functioned as a means of easing the barriers to Filipinos’ integration into Canada. To better analyze the role the Roman Catholic church has played in Filipino-Canadian immigrant life, this book provides an overview of the history of migration to Canada and discusses the place of the church as seen from the perspective of representatives of diasporic, transnational and second generation communities of Filipinos in Canada. As such, the main data is primary material comprising of interviews with Filipino-Canadians from each of these community groups. This book is an asset to those interested in religion, history, and immigration. |

”The Lord of the Rings” and the emerging generation: A study of the message and medium. J. R. R. Tolkien and Peter Jackson. $49.99 Throughout the ages, the communication of Christian truth has been the domain of preachers and poets, musicians and theologians, authors and dramatists, each seeking means by which to engage others in the truth that has captivated and transformed their lives. From direct proposition to allegorical representation, such effective communicators as Dwight L. Moody and C. S. Lewis have confronted their culture with Christian truth in response to Jesus’ command to “go and make disciples”. J. R. R. Tolkien employed myth as his vehicle of expression, creating The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) with no overt religious symbol or act, yet weaving his Roman Catholic Christian worldview into the very fabric of his characters and their journeys. Tolkien described his work as a “fundamentally religious and Catholic work, unconsciously at first, but consciously in the revision, with religious element absorbed into the story.”1 He discovered that myth allows the reader opportunity to explore the realities of life within the safety of an imagined world and its relationship.;Tolkien’s fantasy of Middle Earth and her people has captured the heart and mind of generations since its publication in 1954, offering glimpses into the truth that defined Tolkien’s life and worldview. This 20th century work found new expression and an even broader audience in Peter Jackson’s 21st century cinematic interpretation LOTR. Together, Tolkien’s myth and Jackson’s cinematic portrayal of that myth have successfully captured the attention of the Emerging generation. A study of both narrative and cinematic mediums along with the clarity of the message conveyed will allow an opportunity to consider the larger question of what medium and what message impacts the emerging post-modern generation. This dissertation will explore the effectiveness of Tolkien’s myth and Jackson’s cinematic interpretation of that myth in communicating truth, seeking insights into effective means of the communication of Christian truth |

10 Books Every Conservative Must Read: Plus Four Not to Miss and One Imposter $37.79 Praise for 10 Books Every Conservative Must Read“Because of too much TV and too little decent schooling, too many Americans are unread in the classics that have defined our culture. That’s why Wiker’s 10 Books Every Conservative Must Read is so important: it provides a shopping list for those who want to understand what makes America and the West exceptional.”—Brett M. 1111 Days in My Life Plus Four $5.03 In 1941, in Zlochow, Poland, where Ephraim Sten lived with his family, the SS rounded up Jews into ghettoes. Thirteen-year old Sten, who had started a diary, fled with his mother to the countryside where a Catholic-Ukrainian couple hid them and several relatives. Sten”s account of those years was harrowing. Fifty years later he had the diary translated into Hebrew for his children and responded to each of his own youthful entries. For decades, he writes, I was not conscious of the load crushing my soul. This damned writing has newly rediscovered everything. 1111 Days in My Life Plus Four is a double testimony of the boy and the man he became–an extraordinary record and, in itself, a distinctive work of literature. As Myra Sklarew writes, the boy and the man he became finally stand side by side in an attempt to free themselves from the voices, faces, images of their shared past. |

Excerpt: The English Benedictine Congregation (abbr. EBC) comprises autonomous Roman Catholic Benedictine communities of monks and nuns and is technically the oldest of the 21 congregations that are affiliated in the Benedictine Confederation. Although the EBC claims technical canonical continuity with the congregation erected by the Holy See in 1216, that earlier English Congregation was destroyed at the dissolution of the monasteries in 1535-40. The present English Congregation was revived and restored by Rome in 1607-33 when numbers of Englishmen and Welshmen had become monks in continental European monasteries and were coming to England as missioners. At the beginning of the 21st century the EBC has Houses in the United Kingdom, the United States, South America and Africa. Every four years the General Chapter of the EBC elects an Abbot President from among the Ruling Abbots with jurisdiction, and those who have been Ruling Abbots. He is assisted by a number of officials. Periodically he undertakes a Visitation of the individual Houses. The purpose of the Visitation is the preservation, strengthening and renewal of the religious life, including the laws of the Church and the Constitutions of the congregation. The President may require by Acts of Visitation, that particular points in the Rule, the Constitutions and the law of the Church be observed. The current Abbot President is the Right Reverend Dom Richard Yeo, former Abbot of Downside Abbey. United Kingdom: United States: Zimbabwe Peru … More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2975011 |

Excerpt: The Canons Regular of the Holy Cross of Coimbra originated in Portugal . The congregation was founded using the principles of the Rule of Saint Augustine (as many other congregations at the time used) and in its earlier days its members were sometimes classified as “Augustinians,” as were many of the other congregations of Augustinian Canons Regular. It was founded through the labors of St. Theotonius , Archdeacon Dom Tello, and Don Juan Peculiar in 1131.Construction of its first facility began on June 28, 1131, and the common life of the members of the congregation began on February 25, 1132. It officially received papal protection on May 5, 1135, from Pope Innocent II .Saint Anthony of Padua was a member of this congregation before he joined the Franciscans . Saint Charles Borromeo was entrusted with the protection of this order when he was a cardinal. The order was suppressed in 1834 on account of the anti-Catholic Portuguese government. In 1977, a movement called the Work of the Holy Angels began to work to restore the order, which was formalized in 1979 by Pope John Paul II . 13th-Century Books $14.13 Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Summa Theologica. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Summa Theologica (Latin: “Summary of Theology” or “Highest Theology”) or the Summa Theologiæ or simply the Summa, written 12651274) is the most famous work of Thomas Aquinas (c. 12251274), although it was never finished. It was intended as a manual for beginners as a compilation of all of the main theological teachings of the time. It summarizes the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West, which, before the Protestant Reformation, subsisted solely in the Roman Catholic Church. The Summa’s topics follow a cycle: the existence of God; God’s creation, Man; Man’s purpose; Christ; the Sacraments; and back to God. It is famous for its five arguments for the existence of God, the Quinquae viae (Latin: five ways). Throughout his work, Aquinas cites Augustine of Hippo, Aristotle, and other Christian, Jewish, Muslim and ancient pagan scholars. The Summa Theologica is a more mature and structured version of Aquinas’s earlier Summa contra Gentiles. This earlier work was more apologetic, each article refuting a belief of a heresy. The Summa is composed of three major parts, each of which deals with a major subsection of Christian theology. Each part contains several questions, each of which revolves around a more specific subtopic; one such question being “Of Christ’s Manner of Life.” Each question contains several articles, which are phrased as interrogative statements dealing with specific issues, such as “Whether Christ should have led a life of poverty in this world?” The Summa has a standard format for handling each article. This method of exposition is derived from Averroes, to whom Aquinas refers respectfully as “the Commentator.” The Summa makes many references to certain |

Excerpt: Gui d’Ussel, d’Ussèl, or d’Uisel (fl. 11951209) was a turn-of-the-thirteenth-century troubadour of the Limousin. Twenty of his poems survive: eight cansos, two pastorelas, two coblas, and eight tensos, several with his relatives and including a partimen with Maria de Ventadorn. Four of his cansos melodies remain. According to his vida, Gui was the youngest of three sons of a wealthy noble family of the castle Ussel-sur-Sarzonne, northeast of Ventadorn. He and his brothers Ebles and Peire, as well as his cousin Elias, are all reputed troubadours and castellans of Ussel according to the author of the vida, who makes Gui himself a canon of Montferrand and Brioude in the diocese of Clermont. Among his relatives Gui was known for his cansos. The only confirmation of Gui’s family from outside his vida is a reference to the brothers Guido and Eblo Usseli donating land to the abbey of Bonaigue. Gui’s biographer believed him to have been in love with Malgarita, wife of Rainaut VI, viscount of Aubusson. He supposedly later fell in love with Guillemette de Comborn, wife of Dalfi d’Alvernha, and composed many songs about her. Gui spent almost his entire life in the Limousin and Auvergne, rarely travelling abroad. Gui addresses several of his songs to Maria de Ventadorn (including the partimen) and makes reference to Peter II of Aragon in one which survives with a melody. The reference to Peter’s queen in the song’s razo puts the date of its composition in 1204 or later, after Peter’s marria… |

Excerpt: Apostolici Regiminis was a papal bull issued 19 December, 1513, by Pope Leo X , in defence of the Roman Catholic doctrine concerning the immortality of the soul .Theological content Its object was to condemn a two-fold doctrine then current: That the soul of man is of its nature mortal, and that it is one and the same soul which animates all men. Others, prescinding from the teaching of revelation, held that doctrine to be true according to natural reason and philosophy.Leo X condemned the doctrine in itself and from every point of view. He refers to the definiteion of the Council of Vienne (1311) published by Pope Clement V (1305-14) which taught that the soul is “really, of itself, and essentially, the form of the body”; and then declares that it is of its own nature immortal, and that each body has a soul of its own. This doctrine is said to be clear from those words of the Gospel, “But he cannot kill the soul”, and “he who hates his soul in this world preserves it for eternal life”. Moreover, if the condemned doctrine were true, the Incarnation would have been useless, and we should not need the Resurrection; and those who are the most holy would be the most wretched of all.The Bull enjoins on all professors of philosophy in universities to expound for their pupils the true doctrine and refute the false one. To prevent such errors in future, the Bull makes it obligatory on all ecclesiastics, secular and regular, in holy orders, who devote their time to the study of philosophy and poetry for five years after the study of grammar and dialectic, to study also theology or canon law.References (URLs online) This article incorporates text from the entry Apostolici Regiminis in Catholic Encyclopedia of 1913, a publication now in the public domain . 1702 Works: 1702 Architecture, 1702 Books, 1702 Operas, 1702 Plays, Santa Maria in Trastevere, St. Thomas Church, Leipzig, Ariadne Musica $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Ariadne musica is a collection of organ music by Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer , first published in 1702. The main part of the collection is a cycle of 20 preludes and fugues in different keys , so Ariadne musica is considered an important precursor to Johann Sebastian Bach ‘s Well-Tempered Clavier , which has a similar structure. The title refers to the Greek myth in which Theseus is able to find his way out of Minotaur ‘s labyrinth using a ball of thread Ariadne , daughter of King Minos of Crete , gave him. Similarly, the music in the collection can be said to guide the listener through a labyrinth of keys. Fischer also used Greek mythology to name the pieces in another large scale music collection of his, Musikalischer Parnassus .The first edition of Ariadne musica was made in 1702 in Schlackenwerth . The work was reprinted several times during Fischer’s life. The original print mentioned by Johann Gottfried Walther in Musicalisches Lexicon is now lost, but a manuscript copy survives.Pieces 20 preludes and fugues:5 ricercars on chorale melodies, each connected with a specific catholic event:All pieces are quite short, including a few really brief fugues (the 7 bar A minor fugue being the shortest). Most are in common time , with a few exceptions (most notably the E Dorian fugue which is in 12/8). The preludes vary from pieces based on short simplistic toccata -like passages over long sustained chords (as in, for example, the C major and G major ones) to slightly more complex works with brief imitative passages like this one, from the end of the E-flat major prelude:The fugues are all in four voices, except the A-flat major one which is a five voice fugue. Some are loosely connected thematically to the accompanying preludes. The ricercars all feature themes |
