The Catholic Church and Power Politics in Latin America: The Dominican Case in Comparative Perspecti

$89

“The Catholic Church acted as a mediator during social and political change in several Latin American countries from the 1960s through the 1990s: the Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador. Although the Catholic clergy was called to mediate in political crises in all five countries, in the Dominican Republic the Church’s role as mediator was eventually institutionalized. A historical examination of church-state relations and case study of the Dominican Republic leads into important regional comparisons that broaden our understanding of the Catholic Church in the whole of Latin America.”

The Education of Catholic Girls (Paperback)

$32.42

A century after its first publication, Mother Janet Erskine Stuart s classic The Education of Catholic Girls is back, and it s as relevant and useful as ever! Practical as it is pious, witty as it is wise, this collection of counsels not only helps educators in school or at home meet Catholic girls special intellectual needs, it offers sage strategies for whole-person formation: showing us how to help our girls grow into virtuous Catholic women.Catholic girls among other girls, writes Mother Stuart, and Catholic women among other women, have the privilege as well as the duty of upholding what is highest. The Education of Catholic Girls will help you teach your girls whether through math and science, needlework, Catholic philosophy, or good manners to uphold what is highest; it will help you train them to live a perfectly honorable and fearless life. This centenary edition of The Education of Catholic Girls features English translations of the original s foreign phrases and quoted sources (Mother Stuart s presumption about her readers knowledge of Latin, French, and German points to something education has lost over the years), as well as a new preface by Catholic homeschooling author and speaker Susie Lloyd.

Excerpt: Africa is an epic poem in Latin hexameters by the 14th century Italian poet Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca). It tells the story of the Second Punic War, in which the Carthaginian general Hannibal invaded Italy, but Roman forces were eventually victorious after an invasion of north Africa led by Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, the epic poem’s hero. Africa and De Viris Illustribus were partially inspired by Petrarch’s visit to Rome in 1337. After returning from his grand tour, the first sections of Africa were written in the valley of Vaucluse. Petrarch recalls The fact that he abandoned it early on is not entirely correct since it was far along when he received two invitations (from Rome and from Paris) in September 1340 each asking him to accept the crown as poet laureate. A preliminary form of the poem was completed in time for the laurel coronation April 8, 1341 (Easter Sunday). Petrarch spoke of this It could easily be inferred from this wording that the epic poem was far enough along to receive this flattering colloquy. By 1343 the work was provvisoriamente finished as we have it today worldwide. Petrarch had been with the court of Cardinal Giovanni Colonna in the days he lived at Avignon around 1330. He was ordained in the Catholic priesthood, as capellanus continuus, in the lower ranks. He received additional support from the Roman Colonna dynasty for his work on Cornelius Scipio. Petrarch’s epic poem was dedicated to Robert of Naples, king of Sicily. The king gave him a three-day oral examination at his residence a few days prior to see if he was qualified to receive the laurel crown. King Robert’s examination and the legal document privilegium

Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Summa Theologica (Latin: “Summary of Theology” or “Highest Theology”) or the Summa Theologiæ or simply the Summa, written 12651274) is the most famous work of Thomas Aquinas (c. 12251274), although it was never finished. It was intended as a manual for beginners as a compilation of all of the main theological teachings of the time. It summarizes the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West, which, before the Protestant Reformation, subsisted solely in the Roman Catholic Church. The Summa’s topics follow a cycle: the existence of God; God’s creation, Man; Man’s purpose; Christ; the Sacraments; and back to God. It is famous for its five arguments for the existence of God, the Quinquae viae (Latin: five ways). Throughout his work, Aquinas cites Augustine of Hippo, Aristotle, and other Christian, Jewish, Muslim and ancient pagan scholars. The Summa Theologica is a more mature and structured version of Aquinas’s earlier Summa contra Gentiles. This earlier work was more apologetic, each article refuting a belief of a heresy. The Summa is composed of three major parts, each of which deals with a major subsection of Christian theology. Each part contains several questions, each of which revolves around a more specific subtopic; one such question being “Of Christ’s Manner of Life.” Each question contains several articles, which are phrased as interrogative statements dealing with specific issues, such as “Whether Christ should have led a life of poverty in this world?” The Summa has a standard format for handling each article. This method of exposition is derived from Averroes, to whom Aquinas refers respectfully as “the Commentator.” The Summa makes many references to certain

The diocese, which adheres to the Roman Rite, was established on 18 April 1474; in 2004 it had a population of 103,500 of whom 101,200 were baptised. Alceste Catella has been bishop of the diocese since 15 May 2008. The cathedral of Casale Monferrato in Via Liutprando. Casale Monferrato, the ancient Bodincomagus, is a city in the province of Alessandria, Piedmont (Italy), on the River Po, and has been a stronghold since the time of the Lombards. Liutprand, King of the Lombards enlarged it, and Emperor Otto II made it the chief town of a marquisate, giving it to the sons of Aleran, Duke of Saxony; later it was inherited by Emperor Michael VIII, Palaeologus, who sent thither his son Theodore. In 1533, the dynasty of the Palaeologi being extinct, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor gave it to the House of Gonzaga. From 1681 to 1706 it was in the hands of the French, from whom, in 1713, it passed to the House of Savoy. Casale was created a see in 1474 by Sixtus IV; previously it belonged to the Diocese of Asti. Its first bishop was Bernardino de Tebaldeschi; his successor was Gian Giorgio Paleologo (1517), who also governed the marquisate for his nephew, a minor. Among its noteworthy bishops were: the Dominican Benedetto Erba (1570), most zealous for the Christian instruction of children and the introduction of the Tridentine reforms, in which good work he was associated with St. Charles Borromeo; he was also the founder of the monti di pietà; Giulio Careta (1614), who imitated other contemporary bishops and founded an oratory for priests, a… More:

Excerpt: The Biblia Polyglotta (also called the Biblia Regia ) was printed between 1568 and 1573 by the printer Christoffel Plantijn in his printing house in Antwerp (now Belgium ).Plantin was suspected of Calvinist sympathies, although Antwerp at that time was firmly Catholic . He developed a plan to prove his loyalty to the Catholic king Philip II of Spain by producing a version of the Bible in five languages. The king financed the plan and sent the Spanish theologian Benito Arias Montano to Antwerp to watch over the production of this eight-volume masterpiece of printing, which was printed in 1100 copies. The first four volumes contain the Old Testament . The left page has two columns with the Hebrew original and the Latin translation, the right page has same text in Greek with its own Latin translation. Underneath these columns there is a Aramaic version on the left-hand page and a Latin translation of this on the right-hand side. For printing the Hebrew text Plantin used among others Daniel Bomberg ‘s Hebrew type, which he had received from Bomberg’s nephews. Volume 5 contains the New Testament in Greek and Syriac , each with a Latin translation, and a translation of the Syriac into Hebrew. Volume 6 has the complete Bible in the original Hebrew and Greek, as well as an interlinear version that has the Latin translation printed between the lines. The last two volumes contain dictionaries (Hebrew-Latin, Greek-Latin, Syriac-Aramaic, grammar rules, list of names, etc.) that were of value to scholars.A complete copy of this Bible is on display at the Plantin-Moretus Museum (the site of the original printing press), including the typefaces which were designed for this project.Sources Notes A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The Modena Triptych is 1568 triptych (three panel

The kingdom of Navarre was formed when local Basque leader Íñigo Arista was elected or declared King in Pamplona (traditionally in 824) and led a revolt against the regional Frankish authority. The southern part of the kingdom was conquered by the Crown of Castile in 1513, and thus became part of the unified Kingdom of Spain. The northern part of the kingdom remained independent, but it was joined with France in a personal union in 1589 when King Henry III of Navarre inherited the French throne as Henry IV of France, and in 1620 it was merged into the Kingdom of France. There are similar earlier toponyms but the first documentation of Latin navarros appears in Eginhard’s chronicle of the feats of Charles the Great. Other Royal Frankish Annals give nabarros. There are two proposed etymologies for the name of Navarra/Nafarroa/Naparroa: Note that Joan Corominas does not

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! As a means of recording the passage of time, the 16th century lasted from 1501 to 1600. During the 16th century, Spain and Portugal explored and conquered the world seas. Latin America became a Spanish colony, while Portugal became the master of the Indian Ocean. In Europe, the Protestant Reformation gave a major blow to the authority of the Papacy and the Roman Catholic Church. European politics became dominated by religious conflicts, with the groundwork for the epochal Thirty Years’ War being laid towards the end of the century. In the Middle East, the Ottoman Empire continued to expand, with the Sultan taking the title of Caliph, while dealing with a resurgent Persia. Iran and Iraq were caught by major popularity of the once-obscure Shiite sect of Islam under the rule of the Safavid dynasty of warrior-mystics, providing grounds for a Persia independent of the majority-Sunni Muslim world.

Excerpt: The Zauski Library (Polish: , Latin: ) was built in Warsaw 17471795 by Józef Andrzej Zauski and his brother, Andrzej Stanisaw Zauski, both Roman Catholic bishops. The library was open to the public and indeed was the first Polish public library, the biggest in Poland and one of the earliest public libraries in Europe. After the Kociuszko Uprising, the Russian troops acting on orders from Czarina Catherine II transferred the library’s contents to her personal collection in Petersburg, where a year later it formed the cornerstone of the newly founded Imperial Public Library’s collection. In the 1920s, the government of the RSFSR returned some of the collection to the recently reestablished Polish state, yet this collection was destroyed by German soldiers during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Exlibris of the Zauski Library showing the library’s interior. The greatest passion of the Zauski brothers was books. Józef Andrzej Zauski together with his brother Andrzej Stanisaw Zauski obtained the collections of such earlier Polish bibliophiles as Jakub Zadzik, Krzysztof Opaliski, Tomasz Ujejski, Janusz Winiowiecki, Jerzy Mniszech and Jan III Sobieski from his grand daughter Maria Karolina Sobieska. From 1730s they planned the creation of a library and in 1747 the brothers founded the Zauski Library (Biblioteka Zauskich). Located in the 17th century Daniowiczowski Palace in Warsaw (built for Mikoaj Daniowicz of urów) the library had two storeys (the large reading room was on the second floor) and was topped with a small tower, in which an astronomy observatory was placed. The building reconstruction in rococo style was accomplished in 1745 by Francesco Antonio Melana and his brother. It was considered to be the first Polish public library and one of the…

Excerpt: The Fourth Council of Constantinople (Roman Catholic) was the 8th Catholic Ecumenical Council held in Constantinople from October 5, 869 to February 28, 870. It included 102 bishops, 3 papal legates, and 4 patriarchs. The Council met in 10 sessions from October 869 to February 870 and issued 27 canons. The council was called by Emperor Basil I the Macedonian and Pope Adrian II. It deposed Photios, a layman who had been appointed as Patriarch of Constantinople, and reinstated his predecessor Ignatius. The Council also reaffirmed the decisions of the Second Council of Nicaea in support of icons and holy images and required the image of Christ to have veneration equal with that of the gospel book. A later council, the Greek Fourth Council of Constantinople, was held after Photios had been reinstated on order of the Emperor. Today, the Roman Catholic Church recognizes the council in 869870 as “Constantinople IV”, while the Eastern Orthodox Churches recognize the councils in 879880 as “Constantinople IV” and revere Photios as a saint. At the time that these councils were being held, this division was not yet clear. These two councils represent a break between East and West. The previous seven ecumenical councils are recognized as ecumenical and authoritative by both Greek-literate Eastern Christians and Latin-literate Western Christians. This division led eventually to the East-West Schism of 1054. With the coronation of Charlemagne by Pope Leo III in 800, his new title as Patricius Romanorum, and the handing over of the keys to the Tomb of Saint Peter, the papacy had acquired a new protector in the West. This freed the pontiffs to some degree from the power of the emperor in Constantinople but it also led to a schism, because t… More:

Excerpt: Anastasius Bibliothecarius (c. 810-c. 878) was Head of archives (bibliothecarius, literally “librarian”) and antipope of the Roman Catholic Church. He was a nephew of Bishop Arsenius of Orte, who executed important commissions as Papal legate. Anastasius learned the Greek language from Eastern Roman monks and obtained an unusual education for his era, such that he appears to be the most learned ecclesiastic of Rome in the barbaric period of the 9th century. During the pontificate of pope Nicholas I (855-867) Anastasius was abbot of Santa Maria in Trastevere on the farther side of the Tiber. Among other matters, he was employed by the pope as secretary and he has been shown by Ernst Perels to be the ‘ghost-writer’ behind much papal official correspondence of these years. He was also active as an author, and translated Greek language works into Latin. Among them was the biography of St. John the Merciful, which he dedicated to Nicholas I. The successor of Nicholas, Pope Adrian II (867-872), appointed Anastasius bibliothecarius (Head of archives) of the Roman Church, an important office at the Lateran Palace that gave him further influence at the papal Court. In 869 he was sent by Louis II, Holy Roman Emperor as envoy to Constantinople, with two men of high rank in the Frankish Empire, to negotiate a marriage between Leo VI the Wise, oldest son of the Byzantine emperor Basil I, and Louis’s only child, Ermengard. When the envoys arrived at Constantinople, the Fourth Council of Constantinople was still in session, and Anastasius, who atte… More:

William Tyndale (sometimes spelled Tindall or Tyndall; pronounced /ˈtɪndəl/) (c. 1494 – 1536) was a 16th-century Protestant reformer and scholar who, influenced by the work of Desiderius Erasmus and Martin Luther, translated considerable parts of the Bible into the Early Modern English of his day. While a number of partial and complete Old English translations had been made from the seventh century onward, and Middle English translations particularly during the 14th century, Tyndale’s was the first English translation to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, and the first to take advantage of the new medium of print, which allowed for its wide distribution. In 1535, Tyndale was arrested, jailed in the castle of Vilvoorde outside Brussels for over a year, tried for heresy and burned at the stake. He was strangled before his body was burnt by some people who associated themselves with the Roman Catholic Church.Much of Tyndale’s work eventually found its way into the King James Version (or “Authorised Version”) of the Bible, published in 1611, which, as the work of 54 independent scholars revising the existing English versions, drew significantly on Tyndale’s translations. The King James Version New Testament is 83.7 per cent Tyndale’s work, with the KJV Old Testament 75.7 per cent Tyndale’s.Whereas John Wycliffe had earlier produced an English translation of the Bible from Latin, Tyndale was the first to translate from the original Greek language. This was only made possible after Erasmus made the Greek New Testament available in Europe.

Latin Cupid American men dating Brazilian women

The American men dating Brazilian women

Here are some general suggestions (I repeat, do not apply to all women Brazil):

See examples

1) There is a strong sense of family in Brazil. The extended family is also important. Married people or people in committed relationships will not a night œBoys € € or â € Outa œGirls night Outa € where they can flirt with other people. Men can play football with his friends in the afternoon, women can take coffee and shoppping with her friends, but not go out at night and leave your partner alone at home. No clubs strip for men in committed relationships. It's all one, no, no, shocking, Brazilians, even for us.

2) When it comes engagement and marriage, Brazilian women are used in a number of different things. No need to spend thousands of dollars a ring diamond. We do not have this tradition (see my post on engagement rings.) We are happy with just a simple wedding ring or some bands. We However, after living in the U.S. and see so many ads of De Beers, you may want a diamond ring as well.

3) Do not even think not having an affair with prostitutes and strippers just because it's his bachelor € ™ s party. We believe that the traps and Donâ € ™ t be surprised if your boyfriend annul the marriage if she finds out. Do not even the bachelor tradition. Very few men to celebrate while € ™ s friends Flanges meet to receive their gifts to their new home. Sometimes men are also involved (a tradition which also starts here.)

4) Latinos in general are more emotional and more possessive, keep this in mind when fighting with him.

5) Women tend to be feminine, women do things (which can have piano lessons and ballet does, baseball or sports hard.) Many are still raised to marry and have children than the first home and career as a secondary activity, a necessary evil. Women are encouraged to spend much time on their looks on the body, clothes and hair. Stay attractive is a sine qua non for a culture that judges people by their appearance.

6) Although racism is not so widespread and divisive as the United States, Brazil minimize lighter skinned Brazilians with darker skin. They Brazilians are darker as belonging to lower social classes.

7) Brazil still has a strong class division. Not only is it very visible, but there is little interaction between the classes (unless the â € € œlower classesâ work for œhigherâ € â €). Sad but true.

8) Many media class Brazilian girls were raised with the servants. Therefore, any are used household chores, which is considered below. Working with hands in Brazil is also associated with lower classes.

Remember that Brazil had slavery and South America and one of the consequences of slavery, it it may take several generations of their descendants to achieve the same level of success in the life of their former owners had. Therefore, Brazilians of African descent is the poor who are struggling in Brazil, which had more difficulty in obtaining an education and better jobs. Fortunately, this situation is slowly improving. Brazilian men and women often do not know how to arrange things or practices ING-cost labor and serves a lifetime.

9) The Brazilian women expect the man is a gentleman. They love a man who opens doors, leads sites, changes your oil, etc. when it comes to practical things. But when it comes to making decisions, women Brazil is critical and does not shrink violets. They expect the respect and share decisions with them if they are part of a couple.

10) Never, under any pretext, call your GF or wife word B. Caller's name in Brazil is considered extremely offensive and a man should never call his name, little matter how the woman is a terrible argument. A woman, a mother or daughter, is sacred. American movies show a lot of profanity (the F-word appears be the most popular). Brazilian partners cursing gangsters and accessories.

11) The mother in law thing. Many older women in Brazil are in a dire economic situation due to widowhood, divorce, lack of opportunities, low paid jobs. Generation older women are not employed outside the home. Therefore, they expect their children to take care of them. Much these mothers with their children interfere € ™ relationships and try to control their daughters or son.

They also tend to be solitary and live through their children. They use guilt tactics to keep the children who attend to their needs and see the children in their own right as devil. Toman Kids € ™ s on your side if you have problems with their husbands and marriages sometimes destroy their interference. Not every mother is like this: those careers, those who are in a happy relationship and those who have a life. So beware of MIL load!

12) You and her (or him, in the case of an American woman with an American man) may have differences on how to use your time. Brazilians consider sacred Sunday. It is a day of work, but one day of being lazy, go to the beach, enjoy a barbecue by the pool, football games or watch Formula One, visit friends, visits, films nap or work activities and entertainment consulting.

On Saturday, we could races, but never on Sunday! It is not only the Catholic influence, but also the fact that in their minds, the work week is for work, while the weekend for fun and relaxation. So if you want to play with your car, wash the car, reconstruction ceiling, clean the garage or mowing the lawn on Sunday, you will find resistance. She feels abandoned. In your mind, you should be with her and not neglect it with a € € œchoresâ. Â Not only that, she grew up watching his father to pay someone to do these things. Aid works, the middle class and upper middle class to rest and play.

13) Once you are married and have children with a Brazilian, you must understand cultural differences when it comes be a partner. In Brazil, the emphasis is on the couple. The children come second. You and your wife are the main unit, and not on you and your children. Many American men and women to turn their attention to the children after birth, spending time alone with her husband little time.

Do not spend enough time with your spouse, Romancing Thema and not spend too much time kids can create resentment.

Brazil not â € œDaddy and culture Daughter €. The children spend time with their parents together, not a single parent. Tell your children how you love, hugs and kisses all the time and not do the same with your spouse can create resentment. Brazilians want the novel to continue, regardless how long you've been married. They want to walk hand in hand, they want a PDA, they want to know first.

14) Finally, good things because of the sense of family and his natural warmth, Brazilian women are very loyal, family oriented, feminine and loving companions!
