Hymns $11.98 As a very successful and celebrated songwriter, Beth Nielsen Chapman has never chosen an easy road to that bounty. In fact, she’s consistently managed to avoid trite sentimentality in her work. Her voice shines through her songs no matter who’s singing them. This project is a departure for Chapman, though it is one she has been at work on in one form or another for nearly a decade. These hymns, mostly sung in Latin, come from a larger project of hymns from the religions of the world. Chapman grew up Catholic, and these songs were part of the pre-Vatican II liturgy. These pieces are scored for multiple voices. Chapman herself sings soprano as a lead vocalist and alto with songwriter Pam Rose, as well as tenor with her son Ernest in chorale. Her father, Robert Nielsen, is one of four bass singers; songwriter Mike Reid is another. While some of these pieces are a cappella, others feature spare accompaniment on stringed instruments from harps to cello to classical guitar. The material comes from the Roman liturgy, whether it be processional hymns such as “Veni Veni Emmanuel” to devotionals such as “Salve Regina” and responsorials such as “Dona Nobis Pacem” and “O Sanctissima.” There are two pieces in English, with one of them, “Hymn to Mary,” an original. These performances are humble in scope. They do not reflect the awe of the heavens as many classical performances do, but instead a smaller, more human spirituality and grace. They are earthy, humble, and deeply moving for the limit of their scope. These songs portray the response of the human soul speaking to the God who speaks within, rather than the one that echoes thunderously from the margins of the universe. But there is something else here that makes Chapman’s recording of these age-old pieces so compelling. The weight of history can make a song, especially a devotional, feel oppressive and constraining — i.e., it needs to be performed “correctly.” Chapman feels no such burden on Hymns. These beautiful antiquities are sung reverently with a simple grace that frees them from their chains and makes them resonate, underscoring their meaning, solace, beauty, and stillness. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Beth Nielsen Chapman – Alto, Alto (Vocals), Tenor (Vocal), Soprano (Vocal), Mandolin, Guitar (Classical), Vocals; Chris Carmichael – Strings; Dorothy Nielsen – Choir, Chorus; Ernest Chapman – Tenor (Vocal), Vocals; John Catchings – Cello; Laura Nielsen – Choir, Chorus; |

Ave Maria
Over the years, the hymn Ave Maria has been set to music several times. The most famous of which was composed by Franz Schubert. Today, this piece of music is loved and well known worldwide for its simplicity and ability to travel virtually anywhere which the listener. Even if you only make an instrumental, the song remains an emotional force. The play was written around 1825 when Schubert was than 28 years.
Although many people do not know the words to the anthem was written by Walter Scott's "Lady of the Lake. The narrative poem was published by Scott in 1810, with the words that describe the struggle that occurs between a number of clans in the Highlands of Scotland During the 16th century. Although the account in the poem is a fiction, of course, some clans loyal to King Jacques V, while other loyalties elsewhere. The young heroine of the poem is Ellen Douglas. Finally, she is forced to hide in a cave in the mountains with his father in his attempt to escape the wrath of the king. It is hiding in that begins to sing a song. The song "Hymn to the Virgin" is a prayer the Virgin Mary for comfort and support. His song, the hymn in the poem is the very basis of the song now wanted to know so well, Hail Marie.
"The Lady of the Lake" has been translated into German in 1819 by Philip Adam Storck. The translation was finally used as the basis for the book of songs Schubert was written in 1825. In the book of Schubert, Ave Maria is known as "Ellen Dritter Gesang", which translates as "the third song of Ellen." A year later, a separate edition of the same songs were the two words of English and German words.
It was said that this piece was performed in a small Austrian town in a castle belonging to the Countess Sophie Weissenwolff. According to reports, the song was dedicated to her and, finally, is often called the lady of the lake.
Today, "Ave Maria" is still one of most popular songs in the world, especially among the hymns. Sometimes the song is sung to the words that are not the same as those of Scott Storch and Schubert. In some cases, the song is played only instrumental versions and do not use the words.
The first words of the song, so that the choir is supposed to have inspired the adaptation of the melody as the setting for the whole body of traditional Catholic prayer "Hail Mary." Accordingly, the Latin version of the song is used on a day so frequent, with a Schubert song, a misunderstanding that has arisen that Schubert had written led to the melody specifically to serve as a framework for prayer.
New British recording artists The priests will Ave Maria, including her new album of classical songs. The anthem will be in four different languages, including a trio of Spanish, Latin, English, Italian and German. The album was produced by Mike Hedges and will be a unique perspective on several traditional songs inspired by the church.
