Shouts of joy
Each of us has his own childhood memories of music. more 'brothers A collection folder, songs sang at school, mom always had the radio in the kitchen. For millions of Americans, these early memories are of hymns and songs from other of faith heard in church or at home, and the resonance of life. A recent Gallup poll indicates that up to 41% of American families regularly attend religious services and churches are still one of the country's main source of live music.
Over the past 25 years, the United States experienced a significant increase in the number of non-denominational "mega" churches, many of of hosting major musical events. However, most churches across the country are still modest, with members of the congregation to provide support Music. These members are professional musicians or music teachers sometimes, but they are also amateur – amateur musicians who put aside her career and obligations family to make music in their lives. Each week they gather their instruments and make their voices heard in worship. The churches and temples where they exercise are as different as the musicians are, but the common elements that bind them – the community, music and faith – are universal.
Grajko Phil (the microphone) is the music director of the East Hills Bible Church in Manlius, New York. church musicians from professional CV Abdellah as a drummer for the beginner, as the son of Chris Cox high. Grajko said most of the benefits of music where every musician is able to find their place, and all the world shares the desire to get involved
Playing from the heart
Peter Green, 49, a musician and business consultant at Niagara Falls, New York, grew up with a love for music, learning to play the flute, oboe, French horn and the guitar. In his teens he began playing in his church, where he met with the church organist, a young man Holland, who was in the United States for school. Green argues that the influence organist and the changing role of music in church during these, Acted as a catalyst for him.
"It was the 1970s, and Catholic churches have begun to change what was once called to the masses, "he recalls." It was a mixture of folk and pop songs that sound. One night, after having run through a few songs, the organist asked to avoid partition and quite just play with heart. I terrified!
This fear quickly gave way inspiration, however, that Green has found it easy with his ability to improvise flute. The result was powerful and inspiring, "he said," almost as if I could pray through music. "Began to play in various groups worship-oriented, and is still active as a church musician today.
Melany Ethridge, 38, an account executive of public relations, also found great satisfaction in making music on Sundays. Her husband's career as music director of the church his family moved several times, and each new home, she found a congregation that is welcoming and eager to live music. In his current church in Dallas, Texas, often plays the clarinet solos or accompanies the offering of service
"He made a wonderful creativity to me," she said. " and a wonderful way to worship too. Being in the Church is called to play a lot more sense. This is not just entertainment or fulfillment staff, it is to bring glory to God. "
Product quality
The volunteers who devote their time and talent each week from a wide variety of backgrounds and musical abilities, and many have considered important to be flexible. According to Paul Witkowski, 43, a pianist who plays in his church in Jacksonville, Florida, "Basically, we work with the talent that people are offering. "
However, the quality of performance is important for these musicians, and work hard to ensure we respect. "You should be able to play well enough to follow with everyone and really be part of the group," said Ethridge. " The aim is to show respect for celebrating God. You do not want to deliver a product of the second category. "
To stay on your game, Ethridge found time at home to practice his clarinet, but acknowledges that her husband's work as a musician gives a little advantage. "This is probably a little easier for me to find the time, "he said. "We're a very musical family. So my family supports the practice of my time. "
Green also finds time to play at home, and agrees that having a family member brought to the music does not help. "My wife play with me, "he said. "She plays the mandolin and sings, and makes several months. Often, repeated at home. "
Technically speaking playing in a religious environment is not very different from playing in a band or a group, the skills are the same. sight reading, versatile, works well with others – these are all essential. But making music as a means of expressing his faith is an inherent feature. Instead of music, an accent, or the final result becomes the medium. Worship, community, and respect are the ends, the music is the journey.
"For be a church musician with a heart very different, "says Green." You can not measure, even expected, that success the world calls. "You can not count heads, or offers of collection, and call it a sign that you're reaching people. Sometimes they'll call to reach a room with only four people – but if you do achieve them, then there's success. "
Community praise
Whether secular or spiritual, the music has a way of bringing people together. Witkowski said the community and diversity are which inspired him in his church. As a child in Detroit, he sang with the whole church, continuing the tradition of the university. "What was unique about our group was how she became multicultural," he recalls. "Really embraced the community, and increasing the number of families who come to church. "
After college, Witkowski moved a little, moving to Jacksonville, where he worked as Director of Public Relations Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. "The church I play today is the first African-American Church Catholic in Jacksonville, "he said. "I searched the church after finding that there was a wide diversity elsewhere. It's something I really like. "
Lonnie Pacelli became a Member of his own church community, back the battery after a hiatus of 20 years to play in a marriage retreat. "I played regularly throughout the university, but after obtaining Diploma I'm gone, "he said. "When I heard they needed a drummer, decided to try to choose another time. "
Pacelli, 44, who works as an author and business consultant in Sammamish, Washington. musical director of the church heard him play in retirement, and Pacelli then asked to play in the service when your battery permanently on the left. "At first I resisted," he recalls. But eventually I agreed to play. I am now in rotation with two other drummers, and I played in church three times a month. "
The decisions and strengthening links with the community is one of the most rewarding aspects of joining a religious group. The musicians are often they feel more connected to their faithful companions, because the objective is not performance, but mere participation.
"We are a part of something, "says Green. "These instruments are not" Special "in the manner they would if they were in one phase to another party. We're just part of the general assembly of people who are there to pray together. Some are there with the voice, and there are some tools to help get these votes. But all are there for the same reason.
