The world was at peace; Augustus was Emperor of Rome, and Herod, the Idumean, King of Judea (§8.), when the promise of God, and the predictions of the Prophets, were accomplished. Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Redeemer of the world, was born, in a stable at Bethlehem, of Mary, a virgin, descended from the royal family of David. His birth was announced by Angels to the shepherds at Bethlehem, and by a star to the Wise Men in the East. The cruel Herod made every eifort to discover the Divine Infant, that he might put Him to death ; but by the Lord, s command, Joseph, the foster-father of Jesus, fled with Him and His mother to Egypt, and did not return till after the death of Herod. Jesus then led a retired life at Nazareth in Galilee, was subject to His parents, and ” advanced in wisdom, and age, and grace with God and men.” (Luke 2, 52.) When He was twelve years old, He went with His parents to Jerusalem to celebrate the Pasch, or Passover, and remained there three days in the temple, astonishing even the Scribes or Doctors of the Law, by His wise questions and answers. At the age of thirty, He went to the River Jordan to be baptized by John the Baptist. When He came out of the water, the Holy Ghost descended upon Him in the shape of a dove, and a voice came from Heaven, saying : ” This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matt. 3, 17.) 22. Jesus then retired into the desert, and after having fasted and prayed there forty days and forty 21. Under what Emperor and what King was the Redeemer born ? Where, and of whom, was He boru |

ADVANTAGE OF SPENDING SUNDAY WELL. WE have seen how to spend the day, united to God by devout sighs and aspirations and holy prayers, amidst all the employments of busy life. Every week, by God’s appointment, there comes around a day especially devoted to His service, and the refreshment of our souls—the Sunday—when labor ceases, in great measure, to give place to devotion and innocent recreation. What a blessing this is from God ! We may compare it to the oasis in the desert. The weary traveller, in eastern countries, sometimes has to make his way through vast regions of barren, heated sand, with no springs of refreshing water, no trees to shade him from the sun, no cool breezes, often for many days, until he is ready to sink down from fatigue and exhaustion ; his tongue parched with thirst; his blood on fire with the heat. In these regions, scattered here and there, are beautiful spots, where clear, fresh water springs from the ground; where delightful fruits, oranges, lemons, dates, grew in greatabundance, and the air is cooled by the water springs. How these travellers long to find these spots! When the camels anct other beasts of burden snuff the air from a distance, they forget their fatigue, they run with eagerness to quench their thirst at the cool fountains, and to enjoy the fresh grass. Their owners, with no less delight, stop a day, or several of them, to recruit their strength and cheer up their spirits, that they may be enabled to continue their way until they reach another of these refreshing places. So, they hope, finally, to get through the weari- someness of the whole journey, and successfully gain all they had in view in setting out. Hitler’s Grail $19.27 Hitler’s Grail tells of the invasion of France by Germany in 1940 and of the search by the SS for the Holy Grail in the south of France. A newly formed French Resistance of army and air force regulars chases the SS from France to the heart of Nazi Germany with an abundance of intrigue and military action. The return trip is even more spectacular with the Resistance capturing a Uboat and sailing it from the Baltic to Spain while under attack from the Kriegsmarine and the Royal Navy. But Hitler’s Grail tells much more, It describes the little known fact that the greatest of Roman Emperors, Constantine the Great, the first Christian Emperor, forced together the sun religion of the Roman Army and Christianity to form the Catholic Church. And that’s where the Holy Grail comes in. The Emperor was head of the army (Imperator) and also head of the army sun religion (Pontifex Maximus). The symbol of the Pontifex Maximus was the cup he used to preside over that religion’s communion ceremony, performed with bread, water and wine 300 years before the first recorded Catholic Mass. The sun god used it to grant salvation to his faithful soldiers – salvation without moral judgement – and that’s why Hitler wanted it. Read Hitler’s Grail as a World War II thriller, it does move along, and you will almost certainly find some military-political facts you didn’t know. Read Hitler’s Grail as a statement of the history of Christianity and you will encounter an undeniable historical record never heard from the pulpit. |

Midnight Mass $0.99 Vampires have always lived in Eastern Europe. But with the fall of the Soviet Union, they began to spread across the continent, then the world, turning whole populations into vampires—or human cattle. Having overrun India, the far East, and the great cities of North and South America, the forces of Night are now spreading into the countryside to consolidate their conquest. In a town on the New Jersey shore, the vampires have just arrived, along with their human henchmen, the cowboys, who round up human cattle for the overlords in return for the promise of eternal life—-later. For the vampires wish only a few of their own kind to rule, and feed. The rest of humanity are to be helpless herds, the source of the blood of life. Falsely accused of abuse, Father Dan is drunk in a basement waiting for the end. His superior has betrayed the local Catholic congregation and become a vampire. Sister Carolyn has become a formidable killer of cowboys and vampires. Dan’s niece, escaped from the conquest of New York, has made her way south to find him. Brought together by Rabbi Zev Wolpin, who is shaken by the vampires’ fear of the cross and holy water, they plan their resistance. Against all odds, they discover that there just might be a way for humanity to really fight back. But first they will have to kill the vampire king of New York. |

Please Don’t Drink the Holy Water!: Homeschool Days, Rosary Nights, and Other Near Occasions of Sin $15.95 If heaven””s a banquet, will I have to do dishes? That””s all Catholic mom Susie Lloyd wants to know. Marriage and motherhood have taught her the rest, including the things that are most important in life: Metaphysical realities like the existence of God can get along without my help. Cleaning the bathroom can”t. Homeschooling her kids has left Susie wise beyond her years: she”s learned why pi is square instead of round, and searched out the best places to buy a cow”s eyeball for the science fair. In fact, she says, Socrates had it easy. His students never interrupted him to go to the bathroom or ask when lunch was. Susie”s husband is always there to support her: Greg tells me education would have no purpose if kids didn”t start out ignorant. He seems to think that will keep me from strangling them. Yet she”s always patient, even when strangers gawk at her and her five daughters and ask: Are they all yours?, Are you done yet?, Don”t you have a TV? |

The Catholic Imagination $10.13 Catholics live in an enchanted world: a world of statues and holy water, stained glass and votive candles, saints and religious medals, rosary beads and holy pictures. But these Catholic paraphernalia are merely hints of a deeper and more pervasive religious sensibility that inclines Catholics to see the Holy lurking in creation. The world of the Catholic is haunted by a sense that the objects, events, and persons of daily life are revelations of grace. In this fascinating discussion of what is unique about the Catholic worldview and culture and what distinguishes it from Protestantism, Andrew Greeley — one of the most popular and prolific authors writing today — examines the religious imagination that shapes Catholics’ lives. In a lively and engaging style, Greeley discusses the central themes of Catholic culture: sacrament, salvation, community, festival, hierarchy, erotic desire, and the mother love of God. Ranging widely from Bernini to Scorsese, Greeley’s discourse distills these themes from the high arts of Catholic culture and asks: Do these values really influence people’s lives? Using international survey data, he shows the counterintuitive ways in 06which Catholics are defined. He goes on to root these behaviors in the Catholic imagination. As he identifies and explores the fertile terrain of Catholic culture, Greeley illustrates the enduring power of particular stories, images, and orientations in shaping Catholics’ lived experience. He challenges a host of assumptions about who Catholics are and makes a strong case for the vitality of the culture today. The Catholic imagination is sustained and passed on in relationships, in the home and the community, Greeley shows.Absorbing, compassionate, and deeply informed, this book provides an entirely new perspective on the nature and role of religion in daily life for Catholics and non-Catholics alike. |
