This book investigates the role that the Roman Catholic church has played in the socialization of Filipinos in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The research is based on scholarly acknowledgement of the important place of social institutions-such as churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and other places for religious and faith-based gatherings-in the settlement and integration experiences of immigrants. Roman Catholicism, first introduced into the Philippines via Spanish colonization, has become an important marker of identity for many Filipinos and has functioned as a means of easing the barriers to Filipinos’ integration into Canada. To better analyze the role the Roman Catholic church has played in Filipino-Canadian immigrant life, this book provides an overview of the history of migration to Canada and discusses the place of the church as seen from the perspective of representatives of diasporic, transnational and second generation communities of Filipinos in Canada. As such, the main data is primary material comprising of interviews with Filipino-Canadians from each of these community groups. This book is an asset to those interested in religion, history, and immigration.

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Jugendweihe (youth consecration) is a secular coming of age ceremony practiced by German 14 year olds. It originated among the secular societies in the 19th century as an alternative to Confirmation by the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. It was especially widespread in East Germany, where atheism was encouraged under the GDR, but has become less popular since German reunification. Today it is occasionally known as Jugendfeier (youth ceremony). The term Jugendweihe first appeared in 1852, to mark a new form of initiation developed by the secular movements, who developed a course of moral instruction for their children, founded on cultural history, as an alternative to Christian teachings. The concluding Jugendweihe was above all a ceremony to mark the child’s leaving school, and so was held at the age of 14. Since the 1890s the form of the ceremony has remained largely unchanged. The teacher makes a speech about the humanist worldview, the young person makes a pledge, and is given ‘pages of remembrance’ (Erinnerungsblätter) and a commemorative book. The ceremony is broken up

The Crusades and the Expansion of Catholic Christendom, 1000-1714

$34.95

The Crusades and the Expansion of Catholic Christendom, 1000-1714 is a fascinating and accessible survey that places the medieval Crusades in their European context, and examines, for the first time, their impact on European expansion. Taking a unique approach that focuses on the motivation behind the Crusades, John France chronologically examines the whole crusading movement, from the development of a ‘crusading impulse’ in the eleventh century through to an examination of the relationship between the Crusades and the imperialist imperatives of the early modern period.France provides a detailed examination of the first Crusade, the expansion and climax of crusading during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and the failure and fragmentation of such practices in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Concluding with an assessment of the influence of the Crusades across history, and replete with illustrations, maps, timelines, guides for further reading, and a detailed list of rulers across Europe and the Muslim world, this study provides students with an essential guide to a central aspect of medieval history.

”By legal or moral suasion let us put it away”: Temperance in Baltimore, 1829–1870.

$49.99

This study revisits the history of temperance in Baltimore in order to present an inclusive and revealing narrative analyzing the work of Catholic men and women, free blacks, and the city’s few Jews alongside the more familiar story of white Protestant anti-alcohol activists. Their stories illustrate the ways in which people of different faiths, social classes, and ethnic backgrounds defined “temperance” at different times, and crafted a variety of approaches to alcohol restriction, regulation, or prohibition. My work exposes the ways in which antebellum Protestant and Catholic temperance strategies overlapped, particularly by demonstrating how the Washingtonians both influenced and were influenced by the work of the Irish Catholic temperance reformer, Father Theobald Mathew. But it shows how, in the end, denominational and ethnic differences dashed any real chances for Catholic-Protestant cooperation. And it chronicles how Protestant reformers’ turn toward strict regulation and, in the aftermath of a failed “Maine Law” campaign, prohibition, marginalized Catholic temperance reformers. Finally, it answers the question of what happened to this social reform through the Civil War years, on the home front and in the military, by tracing temperance activism during the war and the post-war years, ending up at the Panic of 1873 and the rise of a national prohibition movement. Throughout, it covers the work of both male and female reformers, and the shifting concerns that shaped male and female leadership.;Two points of entry help define the topic: temperance organizations and their leaders. Sources used in this study included temperance society minute books, constitutions, addresses, meeting notices, annual reports, articles of incorporation, city directories, newspapers, estate and cemetery records, church records, census reports, court records, temperance literature (fact and fiction), state legislative records, and biographical files. ''Cradles of culture, gardens of civilization'': Elementary schooling in Germany, 1900--1914.

”Cradles of culture, gardens of civilization”: Elementary schooling in Germany, 1900–1914.

$49.99

This dissertation examines the elementary schools of late Imperial Germany as agents of socialization and “civilization” and arbiters of morals and manners, health and hygiene, that changed relations between the family, the community, and the state. Using the official regulations surrounding the schools, scholars have embedded the elementary school (Volksschule) in a master narrative of German history. This so-called Sonderweg neglects the lived experiences of the schools with all their attendant diversity, complexity, and conflict. Beginning inside the elementary school itself, this study argues that the impact of education was open ended and multifaceted. The state remained present and powerful at the Volksschule but schooling was also a social phenomenon, enmeshed in a web of shifting cultural and communal relations. Not only did government ministers determine educational policies and practices, so too did a variety of social groups as well as the Protestant and Catholic churches. There is no better indication of the diversity of German schools than the absence of a national education ministry before 1934.;This study takes an ethnographic approach to its subject, showing how the school’s rituals and rules, hierarchy of age and grade, splintering of information into separate subjects, and division of boys and girls, Protestants and Catholics, shaped the pupil’s ways of seeing and knowing. Focusing on Prussia and Saxony, it uses textbooks, lesson plans, the pedagogical press, didactic literature, memoirs, and school journals (Schukhroniken) to illustrate the ways in which the Volksschule and its teachers mediated ideas about the family, community, and the nation. Moral messages on cleanliness, thrift, punctuality, obedience, and order accompanied portraits of the Kaisers and patriotic texts. Pupils took field trips to local landmarks and celebrated the invented traditions of Sedan Day and the birthday of Wilhelm II. More than policies and prescriptions, the

'The Horrid Popish Plot': Roger L'Estrange and the Circulation of Political Discourse in Late Seventeenth-Century London

‘The Horrid Popish Plot’: Roger L’Estrange and the Circulation of Political Discourse in Late Seventeenth-Century London

$100

The Popish plot was an alleged Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II and re-introduce the Catholic faith to England. Despite it being a fiction, belief in the plot became widespread and many innocent Catholics were sent to their deaths.Moving away from the focus of recent histories of the plot, which remain predominately in the realms of parliamentary discussion, courts of law and the councils of the King, this volume considers how details of the plot circulated more broadly. It investigates the many media used, primarily print, but also manuscript and word of mouth, for instance in books, pamphlets, newspapers, and ballads. The most prolific commentator on the Popish plot was Roger L’Estrange, the press censor during the reigns of Charles II and James II. L’Estrange was interested in the working of the London book trade at this time, and as one who did not believe there was a Popish plot, wrote prolifically in order publicly to cast doubt upon it. L’Estrange’s writings provide us with valuable insights into the production, dissemination, and reception of political opinion in this period.Drawing on the latest insights of literary studies, political history, and the history of the book and reading this volume will further understanding in how belief in such an extraordinary plot took hold amongst so many.

100 Dogs Who Changed Civilization

$7.47

100 Dogs Who Made a Difference   If you don’t believe that one dog has the power to alter civilization, then you’ve obviously never heard of Peritas (p. 166), the dog who saved Alexander the Great from being trampled by an elephant. Or Biche (p. 57), the Italian Greyhound who started a war between France and Russia. Or Urian (p. 74), the dog who bit Pope Clement VII and finalized England’s break with the Catholic church. Or Peps and Fips (p. 96), the dogs who helped Richard Wagner compose his operas.   These are just five of the 100 Dogs Who Changed Civilization, and this book honors their extraordinary contributions to science, history, art, government, religion, and more. You’ll meet a dog who ran for president of France (p. 79) and a dog who saved a movie studio (p. 115). You’ll meet dogs who have inspired great works of literature (p. 92) and who were awarded medals for their wartime service (p. 158). You’ll even meet a dog who became a real-estate mogul (p. 141). These beautifully illustrated true stories are a tribute to the intelligence, bravery, and loving nature of dogs all over the world.

101 Questions and Answers on the Da Vinci Code and the Catholic Tradition

$12.95

101 Questions and Answers on the Four Last Things

$12.95

Joseph Kelley has written a short, accessible, thorough introduction to, and overview of, Christian teaching on death, judgment, hell and heaven, called in theology the four last things. Presented in the popular 101 Questions format, this book shows how these four topics, also referred to as Christian eschatology, have their ancient roots in the sacred books of the Hebrew Scriptures, especially in the later writings known as apocalyptic literature. The New Testament receives and builds upon Jewish thought and piety, finding in Jesus Christ a new revelation about the meaning of death, the nature of judgment, and God’s desire that all be saved and united through Christ in heaven. Kelley clearly presents the major theological ideas about the four last things that have emerged in Christian history, as well as the sacramental and pastoral practices surrounding death. This one-step guide to Catholic teaching on death, judgment, heaven, and hell is a one-of-a-kind book and will make informative, fascinating reading.

Black Abbey was established in 1225 as one of the first houses of the Dominican Order in Ireland. Black Abbey has had a long and interesting history, having seen many reversals of fortune under different governments. The name The name Black Abbey is based on the fact that in England and other countries the Dominicans were often referred to as “Black Friars” on account of the black cappa or cloak which they wear over their white habits . The site When the priory was founded the 13th century, the town of Kilkenny was divided in two parts by the Bregach River. One part was an Irish town and other was an English town. Dominicans established the priory between those two towns and outside the city walls, because they wished to show their independence from either side. In practical terms, the site chosen for the priory presented challenges, because ever since the priory was established, right up to the present time, the buildings are subject to severe annual flooding from the river. Eight members of the community died in three months during this pandemic . After the plague years, very few structural changes were carried out at the priory up until the end of 15th century. In 1540, Ireland was under the

It was established in 1515.History There are a couple of divergent traditions regarding its founding..”The site where the monastery now stands was once a part of the numerous monastic properties, offered during the time of Dharmaraja Jamyang Namgial to Chosje Damma Kunga. The hill of Phyang served as the venue of a monastery, known as Tashi Chozong, established in the year 1515. A monastic community was introduced to the monastery and with this started, the first establishment of the Digung teachings in Ladakh.” Others say that it was founded by king Tashi Namgyal , whose reign has been established from independent sources to have been in the third quarter of the sixteenth century. There are a number of chronological difficulties in establishing events in Ladakh at this period and it is assumed that some names have been omitted from the Chronicle either from mistakes in memory or tradition, or a deliberate attempt to eradicate some events which were thought better forgotten. The monastery is one of only two in Ladakh belonging to the Drikung Kagyu , Dri-gung-pa or Drigungpa school, one of eight schools derived from the teachings of Phakmadrupa Dorje Gyelpo (1110-1170 CE). After the monastery was built, it specialised in Digung teachings under Skyoba Jigsten Gonbo. The current head teacher is Apchi Choski Dolma and the reincarnation of Skyabje Toldan Rinpoche is the head lama. Description Phyang contains numerous sacred shrines

Sunniva, a Central and Important Name in Norwegian Mythology and History, Even as Religious Monument

Sunniva

Scandinavian form of the Old English name Sunngifu, which meant “sun gift” from the Old English elements sunne “sun” and giefu “gift”. This was the name of a legendary English saint who was shipwrecked in Norway and killed by the inhabitants.

Saint Sunniva (10th century) is the patron saint of the Norwegian Diocese of Bjørgvin, as well as all of Western Norway. According to legend, Sunniva was the heir of an Irish kingdom, but had to flee when a heathen king, who wanted to marry her, invaded. At the Norwegian island of Selja, in the present-day municipality of Selje, she and her followers took refuge in a cave. The locals suspected the foreigners of stealing their sheep, and the king Håkon Jarl was sent for. Sunniva and her followers prayed to God that they should not fall into the hands of the heathens, upon which rocks fell down blocking the entrance to the cave.

Sunniva and the others died in the cave, but in the years to come miracles were reported on the island. When the Christian king Olaf Tryggvason excavated the cave in 996, the body of Sunniva was found intact. Later a Benedictine monastery was built on the site, the ruins of which can still be seen.

During the fires in Bergen in 1170/71 and in 1198 the remains of Sunniva were taken from the Christchurch and sat down by Sandbru. This reportedly halted the advance of the fire and was hailed as a miracle

Around 1170 the story of Sunniva was written down in a Latin hagiographic work titled Acta sanctorum in Selio.

Sunniva wa an irish princess which was extraordinary beautiful and wise. She decided very early to forsake the marriage and become Kristi bride. After her fathers death whe had to rule his kingdom with the help of relatives, family and friends. When she decided to decline a foreign Viking kings proposal for marriage, he plundered her land. Sunniva declared in the summoning that she would leave Ireland and become Kristi foresight and travel to unknown land with people who would follow her on this journey.

She left with a flock of veaponless men in three ships without any sails, rudder and ores and let herself and her companionship be lead by the sea currents. They were lead north of Scotland, passed Orkenys and the Viking nests found on the main land to the Firdafylke, where the inhabitants thought she and her travel companions where enemy Vikings and cast stones and arrows at them. This event is documented in Acta Sanctorum in Selio. A storm divide the three ships, one ended up on the small Island Kinn, north of Sognefjorden. The irish pilgrims on this ship must have live an isolated life through their lifetime, like other lonely souls on the islands in the Atlantic ocean.

The two other ships drifted off with Sunniva further north to the island Selja, in a bay at Stad where they could find fresh water, fish and birds for survival. They did not meet any people there, so they settled in natural caves in the mountain sides there. However, inhabitants by the fjord nearby felt threatened because their sheep grassed on this island. Hakon Jarl, the king sent men to the island to get rid of Sunniva and her people in the faith they were Vikings. On the island Sunniva and her followers of men, women and children pray for salvation and when the earl and his people entered the island, big blocks of rocks fell down in the entrance of their cave and blocked its entrance totally. They were not discovered due to this fact, and the earl had to leave the island without finding any Vikings settled there.

After some time, two farmers from the Firdafylke, Tord Eigileivsson and Tord Jorunsson were traveling to Trondheim. Then, one night when they had anchored up at the island Selje, they discovered a strange light over the island. It came down from the sky and assembled on one place on the beach so the glow shined in the ocean. They made it to the shore and found a scull on the beach, snow white and with a sweet smell. They did not understand this, but would like to take it with them to the Earl Hakon – Hakon Jarl. He had been killed in the meantime till they arrived in Trondheim, but in their continued travel they arrived to the king Olav Tryggvason, who now ruled in Norway. The new king and the bishop Sigurd understood that the skull was a relique. They made sure the two farmers where baptized and taught in the Christian faith, and asked people about this island Selja.

After this, they sailed to the island and found the cave where they found Sunniva., she was as whole as she was only sleeping and together with her were lots of skeletons that sent out the same sweet smell as the skull had done. Olav Tryggvason made a chapel in front of the cave and made a small church below this location. Human bones that they had found were put in a shrine which was made in the name of Saint Sunniva. This event took place in the year 996.

The day of memorial for Sunniva is the July 8th.

Sunniva became the protection saint for the western Norway and Selja became bishops seat for the Gulating region. In 1170 the bishops seat was moved to Bergen and Sunnivas shrine was transferred to Church of Christ and put on the high alter on August 31st 1170 by bishop Pål. At least the part of the shrines of the Selje men left on the island. On Selje the benedict munch moved in, probably from England, and built a monastery they named after St Alban (according to the legend , Sunnivas brother Alban was with her on this venture). Judged by the excavations around the monastery ruins they had a boys school there, and had been hit by both fires and epidemics before the reform. Traditions tells us that the monastery was idle and abandoned already before the reform after it had been trashed by Swedes before this event.

In 1668 it is told about a protestant priest widow which the successor of the Selje monastery would not marry nor provide for. As a revenge for this, she burned all the archives of the monastery. But tradition tells us that Olav the holly has nealed in front of the small Church of Sunniva and the chapel in front of the cave. He landed on the island Selja on his way home from England when he wanted to conquer Norway and follow Olav Tryggvasons mission.

The holy Sunniva and the Seljemen: Seljumanna mass. The day is also marked on the Norwegian Prime pin. She also has a translation feast (Sunniva translatio) August 31st , in memory of the transfer of Sunniva’s remains to Bergen. The catholic church in Molde is named after her.
