Excerpt: Ponferrada – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The modern name derives from the iron reinforcements added to the ancient bridge over the river Sil (Latin pons for “bridge” and ferrata for “iron”). The city is noted for the Castillo de los Templarios, a Templar castle which covers approximately 16,000 square meters. In 1178, Ferdinand II of León donated the city to the Templar order for protecting the pilgrims on the Way of St. James who passed through El Bierzo in their road to Santiago de Compostela. The castle hosted the Knights Templar’s Grand Master of Castille. However, the Templars were only able to enjoy the use of their fortress for about twenty years before the order was disbanded and its properties confiscated in 1311. Several noble houses fought over the assets until Alfonso XI alloted them to the Count of Lemos in 1340. Finally the Catholic Monarchs incorporated Ponferrada and its castle into the Crown in 1486. As with many other historical sites in Europe, many of the blocks that at one point formed the walls of the castle were removed and used in local construction projects. Extensive restoration works are ongoing. A few kilometres from the city there are the “Las Médulas”, ancient Roman gold mines included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site List. Nearby are also the church of Santiago de Peñalba, an example of Mozarabic art, the hermitage of Santo Tomás de las Ollas (10th century) and the Romanesque church of Santa María de Vizbayo. El Morredero peak, 20 km from Ponferrada (2135 m) hosts a small ski resort. Ponferrada hosts its annual festival (“Fiestas de La Encina”) during the first week of September with many concerts and activities for adults and especially children, and in July it organises a very popular “Templar Night”

Excerpt: Chateau de Mores – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Marquis was a French aristocrat and entrepreneur who came to the Dakota badlands in 1883 to establish a new kind of cattle operation. He planned to slaughter and cold pack his cattle and ship it east in refrigerated rail cars. The slaughterhouse was built in the town which the Marquis founded and named for his wife, Medora. He built many structures in the town for those he employed in his operations, including St. Mary’s Catholic Church. For three years the small town bustled, but in 1886 the operation collapsed due to drought, competition from meat packers back east, and the Marquis’ own lack of business experience and the plant was abandoned. The Marquis and his family returned to Europe, but left behind a small town rife with the flavor and romanticism of the American Old West. The chateau was occupied seasonally by the family for only three years from 1883-1886. During the harsh winter months they would go to France, returning again in spring. After 1886 the Marquis visited the chateau twice, in 1887 and 1889, while Medora and their children visited only once more, after the Marquis’ death, in 1903. From this time on the house was maintained by caretakers. They would ready the house for occupation in the spring but the family never returned. The eldest son gave the caretakers permission to operate the chateau as a boarding house in 1921. During this period the house suffered from theft and lack of maintenance. The home and the land on which it sat was given to the state of North Dakota in… More:

Excerpt: La Salle Academy, Providence – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (also known as the Christian Brothers, the Lasallian Brothers, the French Christian Brothers, or the De La Salle Brothers; French: ; Latin: Fratres Scholarum Christianarum) is a Roman Catholic religious teaching order, founded by French Priest Jean-Baptiste de la Salle (b. 1651). De La Salle was a canon of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Reims in France, and came from a wealthy family. He began to realize the emptiness of wealth and with this new perspective, set about helping those less fortunate. With the assistance of a lay man, Adrian Nyel, he began setting up free schools where the children of the working class and the poor could learn reading, writing and arithmetic. These students also received religious instruction and other training appropriate for forming good Christian citizens. Jean-Baptiste de la Salle established the order of the De La Salle Christian Brothers to continue this work into posterity. The De La Salle Christian Brothers continue to fulfill his mission to this day and it is for this reason that the academy was established in 1871. Founded in 1871 under the discretion of the De La Salle Christian Brothers, the all-male school was originally an elementary school located in downtown Providence. Known as the Brothers’ School, the school’s name changed to La Salle Academy when its status changed from an elementary school to a secondary school. When the student population grew too l… More:

The Origin About The Sweet Saint Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day, also known as St. Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14 in each year, is one of the traditional festivals in western countries. {p2}> As to the so-called Valentine’s Day today, its roots can be traced back to Ancient Greece. The adoration and fear to the Pan was very popular at that time.Kate Moss Adore

Pan is a God of fertility and is described as a combination of man and goat; he is bad in temper and moody that makes people tremble when he was mentioned. In fact, english word panic means literally of Pan, this extended meaning is very vivid. Pan was supposed to blow his syrinx and guard his herd. However, he was easily distracted and had amorous affairs with many fairies and goddesses. A sculpture described Pan close to Eros Aphrodite, while Erose circled above their head with wings, the situation is like today’s Valentine Day greeting cards on which the same as depicted Cupid.Recession Chic â€[ How to Be Trendiest on a Budget

Many Romans also worship a God for a similar, named Faunus who was described as half-man and half-foat look. Romans will revel to worship Faunus on Lupercalia on February 15 every year. During the holiday, some man with some thread on their body would run round the hill, with whips in their hands.

Any woman who wants to have children just need to stand beside the runway. The Romans believe that if a man beats a woman with whips, her infertility will be cured without medicine. In the Catch Phrase and Fable Dictionary, by Brewer, it is said that St. Valentine served as a priest at the temple during helping the martyred Christians. He turned to Christian later, and was beaten to death by sticks on February 14.”

Valentine’s Day getting involve in relationship with Valentine is actually a purely coincidence. In fact, this festival may be related to ancient Rome Faun festival or birds mating season as likely as not. The Characteristic of Valentine’s is to exchange gifts for lovers. People would like to express their affection by valentine cards till now. The card usually depict Cupid, the heart hit by an arrow and other things.

Regarding the connection of Cupid and Valentine’s Day, the dictionary we mentioned aboved records Cupid, the god of love in Roman, is identified with the Greek god Eros.

He usually the representative of by a cute little boy, there are two wings in the back, eyes under a piece of clothes, hand-held bow and arrow. “World Book Encyclopedia” provides further information, which shows that there are different opinions about the origin of the Valentine’s Day. The encylopedia points out: it is said that the Roman emperor Claudius II prohibit the young men from marriage during the period AD 200. He believed that unmarried men can become much better soldiers, a priest named Valentine violated the emperor’s command, and priested over the wedding for young men secretly.

According to the The Catholic Encyclopedia, in AD 496, St. Gelasius I, abolished Lupercalia, and set aside February 14 the Valentine’s Day. And the Valentine’s Day has prevailed as a festival for lovers. People began to commemorate it before 14 century. Valentine’s Day originate from the ancient faith regardless of the true origin and is named after saint of Christian country. Valentine’s Day is also exploited by the business community and become another excuse of money grabbing.
