Excerpt: A babydoll is a short, sometimes sleeveless , loose fitting nightgown or negligee intended as nightwear for women . It sometimes has formed cups called a Bralette for cleavage with an attached loose fitting skirt falling in length usually between the upper thigh and the belly button. The garment is often trimmed with lace , ruffles, appliques , marabou fur, bows and ribbons , optionally with spaghetti straps . Sometimes it is made of sheer or translucent fabric like nylon or chiffon or silk .It is said the name was popularized by the 1956 movie Baby Doll starring Carroll Baker in the title role, which essentially marked the beginning of the enduring popularity of the style for adults.Short daywear dresses of a similar style are sometimes called babydoll dresses ; the name is sometimes two words, baby doll , and sometimes hyphenated, baby-doll . Some styles are similar to what is worn by dolls in the form of infants, and by some infants; the gown is short enough that diapers are easily changed. However, there may be an alternative origin for the style, if we consider the lineage of lace -trimmed shortie bedjackets and bed-capes of the 1930s and 1940s.It is now a highly eroticized item of adult apparel, often classified as a form of lingerie . In Gratitude To My Guardian Angel $26.55 Theresa Patnode opens the door to a simpler, more balanced time in America, reflecting upon her life growing up on a farm, vividly reliving her detailed memories as a ten-year-old girl living in the New York State Adirondack Mountains in the 1930s. Theresa reflects the conflicts of living on a farm in searing poverty with eleven siblings in the cold unforgiving North Country with her guardian angel as a source of comfort. Few today have experienced the many scenarios Patnode relates in a starkly realistic manner. Some of those experiences include family struggles on their Ellenburg, New York farm with inclement weather ruining crops, rodent infestation, snow clogged roads as she helps with barn chores, learns basic catholic ideologies in her local church, dresses freshly killed chickens to eat, helps can fresh tomatoes, goes to school in a one-room schoolhouse without running water and attends fun school picnics. In Gratitude to My Guardian Angel portrays stunning details of a historical time in the United States, a time that was simpler and more basic than the fastpaced, constantly escalating quest for faster and more sophisticated technology in the age of the new millennium. |

Radclyffe Hall $16.95 Radclyffe Hall was a legend in her own lifetime and her fame has never faded. She was also a lesbian, which became part of that legend. Christened Marguerite, a shy insecure child with golden curls and Victorian muslin dresses, she became, at a time when men alone wore the trousers, a flamboyant character who smoked small green cigars, cross-dressed in Chinese silk smoking jackets, and called herself John. In 1928, when she was forty-eight, her fifth novel, The Well of Loneliness, was banned for obscenity, despite protests from leading literary and political figures. The trial turned the book into a notorious bestseller and brought the author literary fame.First a serious poet and novelist, then a notorious cause celebre, Radclyffe Hall was also a suffragist, a sometime feminist, a member of the Natalie Barney-Djuna Barnes Paris circle, and a Catholic convert who believed in spiritualism. Though she was a passionate believer in sexual loyalty, her blazing acts of infidelity lead her to infamous and tormented triangular relationships. Sally Cline uses entirely new material to explore, for the first time, the connections between Radclyffe Hall’s writings, her life, and her milieu, meticulously analyzing the effects on a writer of her readiness to become a martyr to a cause and creating a major biography that is both a signal contribution to women’s studies and a marvelous read. |

The Habit $15.99 Curiosity about nuns and their distinctive clothing is almost as old as Catholicism itself. The habit intrigues the religious and the nonreligious alike, from medieval maidens to contemporary schoolboys, to feminists and other social critics. The first book to explore the symbolism of this attire, The Habit presents a visual gallery of the diverse forms of religious clothing and explains the principles and traditions that inspired them. More than just an eye-opening study of the symbolic significance of starched wimples, dark dresses, and flowing veils, The Habit is an incisive, engaging portrait of the roles nuns have and do play in the Catholic Church and in ministering to the needs of society. From the clothing seen in an eleventh-century monastery to the garb worn by nuns on picket lines during the 1960s, habits have always been designed to convey a specific image or ideal. The habits of the Benedictines and the Dominicans, for example, were specifically created to distinguish women who consecrated their lives to God; other habits reflected the sisters’ desire to blend in among the people they served. The brown Carmelite habit was rarely seen outside the monastery wall, while the Flying Nun turned the white winged cornette of the Daughters of Charity into a universally recognized icon. And when many religious abandoned habits in the 1960s and ’70s, it stirred a debate that continues today. Drawing on archival research and personal interviews with nuns all over the United States, Elizabeth Kuhns examines some of the gender and identity issues behind the controversy and brings to light the paradoxes the habit represents. For some, it epitomizes oppression and obsolescence; for others, it embodies the ultimate beauty and dignity of the vocation. Complete with extraordinary photographs, including images of the nineteenth century nuns’ silk bonnets to the simple gray dresses of the Sisters of Social Service, this evocative narrative explores the timele |

Dress Up on Halloween!
When people think of Halloween they think fancy dress costumes, trick or treating, pumpkins and ghost stories. Just like any other holiday that we celebrate the true meaning has been forgotten and most people don’t even know how these traditions started.
Halloween is one of the most fun customs celebrated around the world. For children it’s all about dressing up and getting as many sweets as possible and for adults it’s all about dressing up and having a drink or two. Note the common occurrence is dressing up – a practice that is hundreds of years old and is still performed to this day. What is it about fancy dress costumes that gets everyone so excited and why do we actually dress up on Halloween?
The word Halloween derives from the term “All Hallows Eve” which occurred the night before All Hallows Day and was a Roman Catholic holiday that celebrated the saints. However, even before people started celebrating All Hallows Day, the Celtic Irish celebrated the 31st October as the New Year. It was believed that on the eve of this day the spirits of the recently deceased would re – enter the bodies of the living for a chance of an afterlife.
Naturally scared and fearing for their souls, the Celts would turn off all the lights in their houses, dress up in scary costumes and cause mayhem in the town in an attempt to scare the spirits away. This theory was so popular that the Roman Catholics later adopted these practices as their own making them even more popular and widespread. However, over the years spirit possession became less popular and people started dressing up as witches, goblins and demons in a more ceremonial manner.
It is a common misconception that Halloween is an American holiday. However, traditions such as Boys Clothes fancy dress costumes and ghosts weren’t introduced in America until the famous potato famine which hit Ireland in the 1840s. Desperately seeking refuge many Irish residents fled to America taking their Halloween celebrations with them.
Even though people now Boden Girls celebrate Halloween very differently to how they did many centuries ago, people all over the world still dress up in fancy dress costumes at Halloween today. Many believe that dressing up is a tribute to the devil when in fact the exact opposite is the case as it was originally started as an attempt to save peoples’ souls from demons and to celebrate the saints.
