Christian Monastic Architecture $8.69 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Cistercian architecture is a style of architecture associated with the churches, monasteries and abbeys of the Roman Catholic Cistercian Order. It was headed by Abbot Bernard of Clairvaux (d. 1154), who believed that churches should avoid superfluous ornamentation so as not to distract from the religious life. Cistercian architecture was simple and utilitarian, and though images of religious subjects were allowed in very limited instances (such as the crucifix), many of the more elaborate figures that commonly adorned medieval churches were not; their capacity for distracting monks was criticised in a famous letter by Bernard. Early Cistercian architecture shows a transition between Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Later abbeys were also constructed in Renaissance and Baroque styles, though by then simplicity is rather less evident. In terms of construction, buildings were made where possible of smooth, pale, stone. Columns, pillars and windows fell at the same base level, and if plastering was done at all, it was kept extremely simple. The sanctuary kept a simple style of proportion of 1:2 at both elevation and floor levels. To maintain the appearance of ecclesiastical buildings, Cistercian sites were constructed in a pure, rational style; and may be counted among the most beautiful relics of the Middle Ages. Most Cistercian abbeys and churches were built in remote valleys far from cities and populated areas, and this isolation and need for self-sustainability bred an innovativeness among the Cistercians. Many Cistercian establishments display early examples of hydraulic engineering and waterwheels. After stone, the two most important building materials were wood and metal. The Cistercians were careful in the management and conservation … More: |

Confessional $50.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A confessional is a small, enclosed booth used for the Sacrament of Penance, often called confession, or Reconciliation. It is the usual venue for the sacrament in the Roman Catholic Church, but similar structures are also used in Anglican churches of an Anglo-Catholic orientation, and also in the Lutheran Church. In the Catholic Church, confessions are only to be heard in a confessional or oratory, except for a just reason (1983 Code of Canon Law, Canon 964.3). The priest and penitent are in separate compartments and speak to each other through a grid or lattice. A crucifix is sometimes hung over the grille. The priest will usually sit in the middle and the penitents will enter the compartments to either side of him. The priest can close off the other compartment by a sliding screen so that only one person will be confessing at a time. |

Crucifix $39.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A crucifix is a three-dimensional cross with a representation of Jesus’ body. It is a principal symbol of the Christian religion, and one of the commonest forms of the Crucifixion in the arts. It is especially important in the Roman Catholic Church, but is also used in Orthodox and Eastern Catholic, as well as Anglican, and Lutheran churches, and it emphasizes Jesus’ sacrifice – his death by crucifixion, which some Christians believe brought about the redemption of mankind. Large crucifixes high across the central axis of a church, by the late Middle Ages a near-universal feature of Western churches, but now very rare, are known by the Old English term rood. Modern Roman Catholic churches mostly have a crucifix above the altar on the wall, as most do not have rood screens. |

Chapters: Hugo Pratt, Fiona May, Silvana Mangano, Francis Aidan Gasquet, Carla Thorneycroft, Baroness Thorneycroft, Henry Noris, Warren Spragg, Adel Smith, Ray Lovelock, Ignazio Hugford, John Woodcock, Lamont Young. Excerpt: Adel Smith , born in 1960 as Emilio Smith in Alexandria , Egypt , is an Italian Muslim known for his radical stances and often accused of fundamentalism . He is the son of a Naples -born Italian architect of Scottish descent and an Egyptian woman. Smith relocated to Italy as a child and later made a living as a translator for Arabic -speaking tourists in Rome . Raised as a Roman Catholic , he eventually converted to Islam . He later relocated to Albania , where he worked as a printer , before coming back to Italy and settling in the northern town of Ofena . Adel Smith founded the Union of Italian Muslims (Unione dei musulmani d’Italia), claiming it to be the most representative Italian Muslim association. Critics of Smith, however, contend that his association numbers very few members. He came to preeminence in the Italian media when he requested that a crucifix be removed from Ofena’s elementary school , of which his son is a student. He was subsequently a regular guest on Italian media venues, where he vehemently attacked Western civilization and Christianity . In 2001, he founded the Italian Islamic Party ( Partito Islamico Italiano ) . He attracted more media attention by demanding that crucifixes in public places (i.e., schools, hospitals, and government offices) be removed, and throwing a crucifix out of the window of his mother’s hospital room after authorities refused to remove it. The Italian Council of State , with the sentence number 556 of 13 February 2006, upheld the display of the crucifix in government-sponsored spaces. Smith was subsequently |

Nuns: Nun, Sister Vincenza Taffarel, Killer Nun, Apostolnik $8.69 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: A nun is a woman who has taken special vows committing her to a religious life. She may be an ascetic who voluntarily chooses to leave mainstream society and live her life in prayer and contemplation in a monastery or convent. The term “nun” is applicable to Catholics both eastern and western traditions Orthodox Christians, Anglicans, Lutherans, Jains, Buddhists, and Taoists. While in common usage the terms nun and sister are often used interchangeably, in some cases they are differentiated, a nun being a religious female who lives a contemplative cloistered life of prayer and meditation, while a sister, in Christian denominations, lives an active vocation of prayer and service, often to the needy, sick, poor, and uneducated. Typical nuns’ clothing consists of undergarments which are made mainly of wool, and a tunic which is tied around the waist with a cloth or leather belt. Over the tunic is a scapula which is a garment of long wide piece of woolen cloth worn over the shoulders with an opening for the head, to which a hood is also attached. A chain with a crucifix, or a set of rosary beads, is usually worn around the neck. Nuns in traditional habit singing Gregorian chantIn the Catholic Church, a nun is a female who has taken solemn vows (the male equivalent is often called a “monk”, although the positions actually entail very different religious origins and constitute very different duties within the church). Nuns are cloistered to the degree established by the rule of the religious institution they enter. In the Roman Catholic tradition, there are a number of different orders of nuns each with its own charism or special character. In general, when a woman enters a convent she first undergoes an initial period of testing the life for a peri… More: |

Prayer Before A Crucifix $57.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Prayer before the Crucifix is a Roman Catholic prayer to Jesus which is said while kneeling before a crucifix. It is often said by Roman Catholics after Communion or after Mass. The faithful receive a partial indulgence if they recite the prayer after Communion before a crucifix. On the Fridays of Lent, the indulgence is a plenary indulgence. A number of prayers to Jesus Christ exist within the Roman Catholic tradition. These prayers have diverse origins and forms. Some were attributed to visions of saints, others were handed down by tradition. Some such prayers are provided in the Raccolta Roman Catholic prayer book, first published in association with the Roman Catholic Congregation of Indulgences in 1807. Various prayers listed in this article are due to saints, or have been used by saints (e.g. Augustine of Hippo, Ignatius of Loyola, Louis de Montfort, etc.) but they are usually not associated with a specific Catholic devotion with a feast day. |

Priest $30.92 Now in paperback, a gripping tale steeped in Ireland’s Catholic history—from the most riveting writer to come out of Ireland since John Connolly.Struggling to find his feet back in Ireland after a lengthy posting with Europol in Spain, drug specialist Mike Mulcahy is plunged into unfamiliar territory when the daughter of a foreign politician suffers a horrific sex attack. Dragged into the case against his will, Mulcahy becomes convinced there is a more to it than a random, frenzied sexual assault, especially when he discovers that the weapon used by the attacker to “brand” his victim was a crucifix. But his know-it-all colleagues and politically motivated bosses, eager for a quick, uncontroversial result, ignore his belief that the attack had religious as well as sexual motivations. Sidelined and overruled, Mulcahy sets out on his own parallel investigation. But frustrations abound at every turn—until reporter Siobhan Fallon turns up asking awkward questions. As more young women are attacked, and assault turns to murder, Mulcahy and Fallon are drawn deeper into an uneasy alliance, as each step they take hurtles them ever closer to the monstrous killer known only as The Priest, and a final showdown that’s as explosive as it is unforgettable. |

Sometimes I Dream in Italian $12.95 The plastic Pieta on top of the TV. The condiment dish shaped like a Venetian gondola. The crucifix studded with seashells . . . Years later, Angel and Lina Lupo would debate: what really was the most hideous thing in their parents’ cramped and quintessentially Catholic house? And why couldn’t they just forget about being Italian and have a normal American childhood? |

Pews in a historical perspective
Imagine this scenario. It is 8:00 Sunday morning and you've stumbled out of bed knowing that is your responsibility to raise their family members, feed and dress breakfast in their "Sunday clothes." Although is he just may be tired enough to pull the blanket over his head, the expectations of their families and their preparation and for yourself Sunday Mass their local church.
You cook the bacon and eggs, find socks that do not have a career, get out your bombs and flowered dress, and do all these things for his own daughter. Please find attached your child that can not be found, and tie line interconnection her husband because he can not do.
You even for the door, however, and you're tired and sore feet. You have all piled into the car and take care of Cheerios to his young son and a snack a coloring book for children not to misbehave during the sermon. I can not wait to get there and fall on your favorite seat.
What if what you have here only to discover that his church was not to be members of the congregation feel? You will discover that the shock chairs the church and the banks have been kidnapped and are standing for the entire service. Very probably he would be disturbed, and, fortunately, it is not likely to occur.
Anyone who has entered a modern church knows chairs will be good for the church and church pews. Since there are no other seats were unprecedented in our society today day. Centuries ago, however, most of the parishioners had to walk rather than sitting, then churches have no pews.
More churches have been built around a dome or a central area where the priests or pastors who preach around the congregation. It worked well parishioners to rise, but by the seventeenth century, the congregation began require more involved, and the need to be increased. Always, however, there were no seats for many, and benches or chairs in the church that did exist were normally reserved for the rich could afford the rent money for the church to retain his seat open to them until their arrival.
In the 1700s, it was common for banks to take a family name on them and everybody knew that banks have been reserved for this family. Even if a family is not there to worship, the bank was still his, and remained empty, while others stayed.
Then, in mid-1800, the headquarters of the church began to evolve more. It has become rare to pay for a reserved seat on a bench, and benches were full of everything you are today, on a first-come/first-serve. Same If, however, it was rare to find enough room in the pews.
As banks began to be known, there were different areas of banks for different people. In general, the richest people closer to the altar or pulpit Sat, while the poorest farther Sat It would also have a special seat for blacks, children, and sometimes widows. They may or may not be labeled with the appropriate name, such as Banks Black Widow.
When slavery is still customary in the United States, slave owners could pay for the bank space for agents close to them to meet their needs, or, sometimes, you must have a separate kitchen for the slaves.
reform of most banks in the United States began around the 1930s. The black and white people, at least in the northern states sitting next each other if they so wished. There was no special seats for the widows or other specific groups of people. The children started sit with their families, most of the time. In addition, the chairs changed during this period. Balconies became more important, and the seats were arranged so that everyone can see the preacher in the pulpit and the altar.
Over the passage of time, some churches have come from different ways to build benches or chairs in the church. At one point, was even common for church members to meet each other. In the Catholic tradition, before the Second Vatican Council changed many elements of the Catholic Mass, the priest before the meeting of his church and has seats in the same direction as the parishioners banks more likely to face the altar and / or the crucifix.
Today, the world is different and every culture and color, both sexes, young and old, rich and with fewer resources are considered as equals in most churches, and seating arrangements have that belief. Anyone can sit where they want, and only in the busiest days are not enough bench room for everyone to have a place to sit.
