Family Payne $14.06 Agnes and Payne continue their romp through life in this second book about the Conley family. Family Payne picks up where Agnes and Me leaves off, as the kids see their family expand to include many new “family members” who join the gatherings in the little shack the Conley family calls home. The preacher from across the road takes cooking lessons from Ma, but only after he recovers from the shock of Payne nearly blowing the windows out of the church. Teenagers Lucy and Billy Watson “have to” get married, and Ma becomes their protector. What’s more, irrepressible Payne just happens to be in the right place at the right time, and delivers Lucy’s baby. Agnes learns the true cost of a dress she covets when she steals it from the Catholic Church Bazaar and a representative of the Pope, Sister Justine, comes to call on Ma. These and many more adventures await. Readers will delight when the “mo-bile home,” as Pa calls it, slides off its trailer and when Payne, through heroic action, briefly brings the Williams and Conley clans closer together. |

Food Culture In South America $52 This volume tells the story of the South Americans and their history through a survey of their food culture. Food in the various countries differs in some ways because of cultural heritage, cooking techniques, and geography, here divided into four zones. The traditions of the primary groups—Indians, Europeans, and Africans—and their five centuries of mixing have still resulted in a stable food culture. The foods of the Indians before European contact still play an important role, along with other foods brought by successive immigrant groups. Europeans tried to establish their staples, wheat and wine, with little success. Many dishes, cooking methods, and food habits have survived with little modification since time immemorial.Students and other readers will learn much about the South American foodways in daily life today, with special attention paid to historical perspective and any rural and urban differences. For example, in all the major cultural groups, food preparation and cooking have always been women’s work, with the exception of the meat roast (asado) by llaneros and gauchos. The rise of the cooking profession is discussed as well. A fascinating look at the daily meal schedule includes insight in to how the European conquerors imposed their eating habits and encouraged overeating, with the abundance found in the New World. Modern life is shown to affect where people eat, as buying meals, often from street vendors, during the workday has become more of a necessity. The survey includes a discussion of special occasions, including agricultural celebrations and Catholic feasts with indigenous elements. The overview is completed by a chapter on diet and health, covering such topics as botanical knowledge and science and an assessment of the nutritional value of the South American staples. Classic recipes from many of the countries and illustrations complement the narrative. |

Italian Pows and a Texas Church $11.51 While the tragedy of World War II played itself out in the cities and across the countrysides of Europe, a different drama took place in the Texas Panhandle, where three thousand Italian prisoners of war were interned in a camp at Hereford. In the last year of the war, the prisoners suffered a siege of hunger dictated by government-ordered cutbacks in rations. Only a handful of prisoners found a way to supplement their meager meals. Franco Di Bello, an Italian officer who spoke English, and a small band of fellow artists agreed to decorate St. Mary’s Church in the nearby town of Umbarger. There, amid the small farms and the hard-working German immigrants who had settled the area, the Italian POWs painted murals and carved figures reminiscent of the Renaissance. The good people of St. Mary’s provided the artistic Italians with a hearty meal each noon — feeding their thin bodies with an abundance of home-cooking and nourishing their souls with simple respect and friendship. This compassionate story of courage and kindliness is as enduring as the art work that still graces the walls of a modest Catholic church in a Panhandle town. This new edition of the book formerly titled Interlude in Umbarger has been released to coincide with the presentation of a musical drama, Bellini’s War, adapted from the story in these pages, with score by Steven Paxton and words by William Wenthe. |

Journey Without A Map: Growing Up Italian: A Memoir $5.94 Even as generations pass, the pride of being Italian is in the genes of those who were raised in Italian immigrant families. Caruso’s Journey Without A Map appropriately begins with pasta cooking instructions, and from that point the aroma of tomatoes, olives and red wine are never far from the stories she weaves of herself and the impact of her family. Whether making connections between her Uncle Nick’s nose and her Roman ancestors, or detailing the daily rituals of her shepherdess mother on the Italian hillsides, Caruso relays the information in broad colourful strokes that are at once both inviting and humorous. With her earliest recollections of her family life in New Jersey, her father’s grocery store, her mother’s Catholic admonishments, the death of Santa Clause, the family habits and the ever-present smells from the kitchen brings to us her sense of belonging to a rich heritage. But Caruso’s journal and journey are not all feel-good, romanticized Italian immigrant experience. There are those reflections on her mother’s life that are as beautiful and intense as they are revealing; the portraits of her extended family members that stand outside the warmth of family love, and the tensions that develop when families are separated by geography and dreams. And though the wisdom of her father and mother guides her through her growing years, it would have to be their remembered love that guides Caruso through her own darkest hours of breast cancer and family break up.As generations of North Americans move farther away from their immigrant experience and origins, Caruso’s Journey Without A Map conveys that in our increasingly homogenized culturalworld what may best nourish us in our needs, shape us in our identities, and be our strength when we are weakest, is our family’s heritage and love. |

Chapters: Nacho Libre, Huracán Ramírez, Mil Mascaras Vs. the Aztec Mummy, El Misterio de Huracán Ramírez, Santo Contra Los Zombis, Santo Vs. Las Mujeres Vampiro, El Hijo de Huracán Ramírez. Excerpt: Nacho Libre is a 2006 comedy film directed by Jared Hess. It is a production of Nickelodeon Movies. The script was written by Jared Hess, Jerusha Hess, and Mike White. It was loosely based on the story of Fray Tormenta (“Friar Storm”), aka Rev. Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez, a real-life Mexican Catholic priest who had a 23-year career as a masked luchador. He competed in order to support the orphanage he directed. The producers are Jack Black, David Klawans, Julia Pistor, and Mike White. Ignacio (Jack Black) is the son of a Lutheran missionary from Scandinavia and a deacon from Mexico. They tried to convert each other but instead got married, then died while Ignacio was young. At the beginning of the film Ignacio is seen looking through his religious toys and books, and hidden inside his bible is a drawing of a masked wrestler titled Nacho. He steals various items (a table cloth, beads from a robe, a flower from a grave) and makes a wrestling costume. He briefly pretends to be a great wrestler but is caught by the monks and put to work in the kitchens as punishment for breaking the rules; he is seen to vent his frustration piledriving on a bowl of tortilla chips, starting to cook stew. The scene fades and Ignacio is shown to be a man still cooking for the monastery. Having grown up as an orphan in a Mexican monastery, he is now a grown man and the monasterys cook, but he is looked down upon by the other friars. All his life, Ignacio has dreamed of becoming a luchador (lucha libre performer); but because wrestling was forbidden by the |

Some Interesting Facts About Cooking With Your Rosary – Celtic Rosary
Have you ever wondered where Rosary derived its name from? Rosary has its origin in Latin and means a garland made of roses. And, the most common thought that flows into you whenever you think of the Blessed Mother is also the rose. Though according to Catholic Church, the Eucharist or the Crucifix is often the top thought in the mind the Rosary is never an exception whether Catholic or non Catholic. Celtic rosary caters to every denomination of Christianity. For most Christians the Rosary is an essential part of their prayer. Some may choose to place it around their car mirror, while in the case of older nuns, they may prefer to the larger version hanging from their waist. Children in school are often given the blue and pink Rosary to inculcate the habit in them. In recent years, the Rosary has made a big come back. The wide range of Celtic rosary will cater to every aspiration.
Revival of Rosary with Pope John Paul II
It would appear that for a brief while during the 1960s after VaticanII, the Rosary faded a bit in popularity. Several people stopped saying the Rosary and Marian devotions. Pope John Paul II who had a deep commitment to Blessed Mother helped revive the tradition. In recent years, Rosary Recitation has rekindled itself. Pope John Paul II’s love for the Rosary was so intense that he added 5 new mysteries to commemorate his 25th year as Pope. Celtic rosarysalutes Pope John Paul II for this noble service.
The Rosary Sequence – Celtic Rosary
A series of devotional prayers recited sequentially in honor of Virgin Mary is the Rosary. The introductory prayers comprise of One Apostles’ Creed – a statement of faith, Our Father (the Lord’s prayer) handed down to us by Our Lord and forming part of the Sermon on the Mount and the ‘Hail Mary” – a two prayer announced to Mary by Angel Gabriel, and a second part which is an intercessory prayer seeking the help of Our Holy Mother, and finally one Glory Be. It is commonly believed that St.Dominic, the founder of the Dominican order, helped add the Rosary. However, some parts of the Rosary predate Dominic while some others came into existence after his death. Celtic rosary will be glad to assist you in understanding and practicing Rosary better.
The Evolution
All the 150 psalms were being regularly recited by monks several centuries prior to St.Dominic. People in the town used to hear these recitations and though they could never read, mimicked the chant using Our Father reciting it 150 times in place of the 150 psalms. The Hail Mary then was eventually added to the prayers. In later centuries, the intercessory part was also added moving the rosary closer to its present form. Celtic rosary can help you understand these depths further.
The Catholics as well as non Catholics are adopting the Rosary more and more in recent times, and are using it more frequently with more means of learning being available. The Protestants too are getting more devoted to the Rosary and using the prayers. You should choose your Celtic rosary today.
