Excerpt: The Tithe War (Irish: ) was a campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience, punctuated by sporadic violent episodes, in Ireland between 1830-36 in reaction to the enforcement of Tithes, a tax payable by subsistence farmers for the upkeep of the Anglican protestant Church of Ireland irrespective of an individual’s religion. Tithe payment was a obligation on those working the land to pay ten per cent of the value of certain types of agricultural produce for the upkeep of the Christian Church. After the Reformation in Ireland, tithe payments were directed to the established state church, the Anglican protestant Church of Ireland. This church was not supported by the majority of the population, seventy five percent of whom remained nominally Roman Catholic. Emancipation for Catholics was a core promise during the campaign for implementation of the Act of Union in 1801 but it was not until 1829 that the Wellington government finally succeeded in passing the Catholic Emancipation Act, despite defiant royal opposition. However, the obligation to pay tithes remained, causing much resentment. Roman Catholic clerical establishments in Ireland had refused government offers of tithe sharing with the established church, fearing U.K. government regulation and control. The tithe burden lay directly on the shoulders of on tenant farmers. More often than not, tithes were paid in the form of produce or livestock. Excerpt: The Philadelphia Nativist Riots (also known as the Philadelphia Prayer Riots, the Bible Riots and the Native American Riots) were a series of riots that took place between May 6 and 8 and July 6 and 7, 1844, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States and the adjacent districts of Kensington and Southwark. The riots were a result of rising anti-Catholic sentiment at the growing population of Irish Catholic immigrants. In the months prior to the riots, nativist groups had been spreading a rumor that Catholics were trying to remove the Bible from public schools. A nativist rally in Kensington erupted in violence on May 6 and started a deadly riot that would result in destruction of two Catholic churches and numerous other buildings. Riots erupted again in July after it was discovered that St. Philip Neri’s Catholic Church in Southwark had armed itself for protection. Fierce fighting broke out between the nativists and the soldiers sent to protect the church, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries. Catholic Church rReaping What has sown?
The fact that the Catholic Church is against a bill that would eliminate the requirement civil action by the victims of child sex offenders, like priests, in the service of the Catholic Church is deplorable. And demand the Church may file for bankruptcy is almost laughable when the Vatican is sitting on billions of dollars, while at the same time asking for donations of its faithful, some very little money. Perhaps the Catholic Church should consider selling the property.
