Catholic and Feminist: The Surprising History of the American Catholic Feminist Movement

Catholic and Feminist: The Surprising History of the American Catholic Feminist Movement

$36

“In 1963, as Betty Friedan’s “Feminine Mystique” appeared and civil rights activists marched on Washington, a separate but related social movement emerged among American Catholics, says Mary Henold. Thousands of Catholic feminists–both lay women and women religious–marched, strategized, theologized, and prayed together, building sisterhood and confronting sexism in the Roman Catholic Church. In the first history of American Catholic feminism, Henold explores the movement from the 1960s through the early 1980s, showing that although Catholic feminists had much in common with their sisters in the larger American feminist movement, Catholic feminism was distinct and had not been simply imported from outside. >Catholic feminism grew from within the church, rooted in women’s own experiences of Catholicism and religious practice, Henold argues. She identifies the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), an inspiring but overtly sexist event that enraged and exhilarated Catholic women in equal measure, as a catalyst of the movement within the church. Catholic feminists regularly explained their feminism in terms of their commitment to a gospel mandate for social justice, liberation, and radical equality. They considered feminism to be a Christian principle.>Yet as Catholic feminists confronted sexism in the church and the world, Henold explains, they struggled to integrate the two parts of their self-definition. Both Catholic culture and feminist culture indicated that such a conjunction was unlikely, if not impossible. Henold demonstrates that efforts to reconcile faith and feminism reveal both the complex nature of feminist consciousness and the creative potential of religious feminism.”

A Cloud of Witnesses: The Cult of Saints in Past and Present

A Cloud of Witnesses: The Cult of Saints in Past and Present

$72

From 11 to 16 August 2003, the nineteenth international congress of the Societas Liturgica was held in Veldhoven (the Netherlands), with as its theme “A Cloud of Witnesses: Saints and role models in Christian liturgy”. The present publication contains a collection of nineteen case studies reflecting the versatility of the congress in its variations and themes, its scope in time (from early Christian times to the present day), and the fact that many churches and religious communities as well as the Jewish tradition are represented. The collection contains a number of articles that reflect on subjects like the phenomenon of saintliness, heortology, the dimensions of time and space in ritual-liturgical practice, and saints and canonizations in the present-day Roman Catholic and Protestant church. The last section consists of contributions on saints and forms of saint’s cult by a number of authors, based on their own religious communities, such as the Old Catholic Church, Anglican Church, Dissenting Free Church, Reformed Church and ecumenical movement. The editors of this collection have by way of an introduction compiled a historiographic-bibliographic overview relating to saints and their cults in various research domains, specifically within liturgical studies, also touching upon certain specific, and for this collection interesting, themes such as the position of the (cult of) saints in cultural and historical studies, Protestant traditions, and the Feminist Liturgical Movement. Aquinas, Feminism, and the Common Good

Aquinas, Feminism, and the Common Good

$13.74

To dismiss the work of philosophers and theologians of the past because of their limited perceptions of the whole of humankind is tantamount to tossing the tot out with the tub water. Such is the case when feminist scholars of religion and ethics confront Thomas Aquinas, whose views of women can only be described as misogynistic. Rather than dispense with him, Susanne DeCrane seeks to engage Aquinas and reflect his otherwise compelling thought through the prism of feminist theology, hermeneutics, and ethics.Focusing on one of Aquinas’s great intellectual contributions, the fundamental notion of the common good — in short, the human will toward peace and justice — DeCrane demonstrates the currency of that notion through a contemporary social issue: women’s health care in the United States and, specifically, black women and breast cancer. In her skillful re-engagement with Aquinas, DeCrane shows that certain aspects of religious traditions heretofore understood as oppressive to women and minority groups can actually be parsed, retrieved, and used to rectify social ills. Aquinas, Feminism, and the Common Good is a bold and intellectually rigorous feminist retrieval of an important text by a Catholic scholar seeking to remain in the tradition, while demanding that the tradition live up to its emphasis on human equity and justice.

Aztl N and Viet Nam: Chicano and Chicana Experiences of the War

Aztl N and Viet Nam: Chicano and Chicana Experiences of the War

$10.2

Showcasing over sixty short stories, poems, speeches, and articles, Aztlan and Viet Nam is the first anthology of Mexican American writings about the U.S. war in Southeast Asia. The words are startlingly frank, moving, and immensely powerful, as they call to our attention an important and neglected part of U.S. history. Gathered from many little-known sources, the works reflect both the soldiers’ experience and the antiwar movement at home. Taken together, they illustrate the contradictions faced by the traditionally patriotic Mexican American community, and show us the war and the grassroots opposition to it from a new perspective — one that goes beyond the familiar dichotomy of black and white America.George Mariscal offers critical introductions and provides historical background by identifying specific issues which have not been widely discussed in relation to the war, noting, for example, the potential for Chicano soldiers to recognize their own ethnic and class identities in those of the Vietnamese people. Drawing upon interviews with key participants in the National Chicano Moratorium Committee, Mariscal analyzes the antiwar movement, the Catholic Church, traditional Mexican American groups, and an emerging feminist consciousness among Chicanas. Also included are personal accounts: Norma Elia Cantu’s remembrance of her brother who died in combat, Barbara Renaud Gonzalez’s evocative poem about Chicanas on the homefront, Alberto Rios’s and Naomi Helena Quinonez’s moving poetry about the Wall, and the recollections of Abelardo Delgado and others on the August 29, 1970 Moratorium.

Becoming and Bonding: Contemporary Feminism and Popular Fiction by American Women Writers

Becoming and Bonding: Contemporary Feminism and Popular Fiction by American Women Writers

$137.99

Expounding the view that the feminist movement has both encouraged and enriched literature by women, Katherine Payant examines a large body of popular fiction of the late 1960s through the early 1990s, relating these writers and works to the women’s movement and feminist theories. The study concentrates on popular fiction, which is seen as evidence of the widespread influence of feminism and as a vehicle for dissemination of mainstream feminist ideas. The opening chapter argues that feminist-influenced popular literature has been neglected by critics and stresses the importance of its study to discern how social movements, such as feminism, affect the arts. Chapters dealing with the 1970s and 1980s survey relevant feminist theories and tie them to representative novels. Especially characteristic of the 1970s was the novel of development, of growing up female, or, in feminist terminology, the social construction of femininity. The 1980s and early 1990s showed themes broadening into women’s experiences, such as motherhood, and bonds between women, including mother/daughter relationships and friendships. Chosen for special focus in individual chapters are Marge Piercy, Mary Gordon, and Toni Morrison, all immensely successful during the last twenty years and reflecting divergent perspectives on feminism. Gordon, writing from an Irish Catholic perspective, synthesizes feminist ideas with traditional feminine experiences. Morrison celebrates the strength and laments the pain of African-American women, but shows ambivalence toward some feminist issues in the light of the experiences of black women. Written in accessible prose, this work will deepen the appreciation of readers of thesenovelists and can serve as valuable supplementary reading for courses in women’s studies and women in literature. An extensive bibliography includes primary sources and studies in feminism, literary criticism, and contemporary women’s writing.

Before the Revolution: Women’s Rights and Right-Wing Politics in Nicaragua, 1821-1979

$64.95

Those who survived the brutal dictatorship of the Somoza family have tended to portray the rise of the women’s movement and feminist activism as part of the overall story of the anti-Somoza resistance. But this mythic depiction of heroic struggle conceals a much more complicated history, which Victoria González-Rivera unravels in this book. As early as 1837, she shows, some Nicaraguan women expressed interest in eliminating the tyranny of male domination, and this interest grew into full-fledged campaigns for female suffrage and access to education by the 1880s. By the 1920s a feminist movement emerged among urban, middle-class women and lasted for two more decades until it was eclipsed in the 1950s by a nonfeminist movement of mainly Catholic, urban, middle-class and working-class women who supported the liberal, populist, patron-clientelistic regime of the Somozas in return for the right to vote and various economic, educational, and political opportunities. Counterintuitively, it was actually the Somozas who encouraged the participation of women in the public sphere (as long as they remained loyal Somocistas), whereas their opponents, the Sandinistas and Conservatives, often appealed to women through their maternal identity. What emerges from this fine-grained analysis is a picture of a much more complex political landscape than that portrayed by the simplifying myths of current Nicaraguan historiography, and we can now see why and how the Somoza dictatorship did not endure by dint of fear and compulsion alone.

Belief in Dialogue: U. S. Latina Writers Confront Their Religious Heritage

The works of Julia Alvarez, Ana Castillo, Sandra Cisneros, Rosario Ferre, Graciela Limon, Pat Mora, Judith Ortiz Cofer, and Esmerelda Santiago, among others, are illuminated here.By uniting historical, cultural, religious, and literary commentary, Belief in Dialogue is designed to help the student or general reader to more completely enjoy and understand contemporary Latina writing. These highly readable discussions are informed by contemporary feminist and postcolonialist thought about color, gender, race, class, and region.Readers of literature being produced by Latina writers in the U.S. today may well miss the full impact of their work if they do not understand the complex spirituality underlying these writings. In addition to influences from the colonial Catholic Church, Latina religious heritage reflects numerous other philosophies: Amerindian spiritual beliefs, African spiritism brought by the slave trade, varieties of European spiritism, liberation theology, and mujerista theology. In response to this predicament, the author considers the long history of resistance and adaptation to Catholic and Christian colonization, including the reinterpretation of figures such as the Virgin of Guadalupe and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The result is a rich and constantly changing spiritual philosophy that is evident in the content, metaphor, and psychological motivation in the fiction and nonfiction produced.

 Beyond Patching

Beyond Patching

$14.95

Here is a revised edition of a landmark text by one of our most distinguished authors and theologians. In BEYOND PATCHING, Sandra Schneiders clarifies the language and concerns of feminist spirituality and effectively addresses the excruciating tensions that have arisen because of the sometimes morally unacceptable way that women are treated in the Church. She asserts that the current halt-hearted attempts to patch things up must be replaced with a whole-hearted renewal, or the Church stands in danger of losing touch with many of its women. BEYOND PATCHING supports meaningful change by presenting the feminist theological agenda in a manner that does not undermine the foundations of Christian faith. It includes such fundamental theological problems as the function of scripture for women once its patriarchal and misogynist content has been identified, the spiritual struggle of women who feel alienated by the church, and Catholic feminism in relation to the larger feminist movement. BEYOND PATCHING is an excellent tool that not only gives hope to women but serves as a warning to Church authorities: just as an old garment can be beyond repair, so, too, the Church, in this case, is beyond patching.

In such works as Gender Trouble and Bodies That Matter Judith Butler broke new ground in understanding the construction and performance of identities. While Butler’s writings have been crucial and often controversial in the development of feminist and queer theory, Bodily Citations is the first anthology centered on applying her theories to religion. In this collection scholars in anthropology, biblical studies, theology, ethics, and ritual studies use Butler’s work to investigate a variety of topics in biblical, Islamic, Buddhist, and Christian traditions. The authors shed new light on Butler’s ideas and highlight their ethical and political import. They also broaden the scope of religious studies as they bring it into conversation with feminist and queer theory.Subjects discussed include the woman’s mosque movement in Cairo, the ordination of women in the Catholic Church, the possibility of queer ethics, religious ritual, and biblical constructions of sexuality.

 Building Sisterhood

Building Sisterhood

$18.35

This story is feminist in the noblest sense. It is about the power of individual women and the strength of their collective energies. It is about building and sustaining community . — from the ForewordThe often forgotten role of Catholic sisters is told in stories deeply rooted in self-realization and feminist methodology in this much-needed history of this fascinating order. In a series of thirteen essays the contributors offer a look into the mysterious world of very strong and creative women, their values and mission. In this unprecedented work, readers gain insight into a world that has rarely been seen by outsiders. An often neglected part of feminist research, the collaboration of the sisters further illustrates the seminal paradigms in women’s work and writing. They deal with many of the same issues of power, economic autonomy, friendship and spirituality, socialization, and professional commitment. In addition to the rigorous training involved in becoming a nun, the authors elaborate upon the complex relationship between this order, other IHM communities, and of the intricate hierarchy of the Church itself. Feminist historian Margaret Susan Thompson places the essays within a historical context and provides detailed background for those unfamiliar with the life, duty, and experience of Catholic sisters. This book will make a unique contribution to feminist scholarship, religious studies, and women’s history.

Calling for Justice Throughout the World: Catholic Women Theologians on the HIV/AIDS Pandemic

$55.76

It’s common knowledge that in developing countries—Africa, India, Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America—the burden of HIV/AIDS falls disproportionately on women, who are generally the victims of male carriers of the disease. In this book, Roman Catholic women theologians from all over the world will discuss the pandemic in terms of their particular geographical and social location. The model for the volume is Continuum’s "Catholic Ethicists on HIV/AIDS Prevention" (2000), edited by James Keenan, S.J. The occasion or impetus for the volume was the First International Crosscultural Conference for Catholic Theological Ethicists, single-handedly created by James Keenan (he raised 3/4 of a million dollars) and held at Padua, July 2006. (The plenary sessions will be published by Continuum under the title "Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church." ) The mentors for the volume will be James Keenan (editor Iozzio’s Doktorvater) and Margaret Farley, "America’s leading Catholic feminist theological ethicist" (19 Dec. review of "Just Love" in "America"). Farley’s advocacy both in the US and Africa on the issue of women and AIDS is renowned, and she will be the best-known contributor. The leading contributor from English-speaking Europe is Linda Hogan from Trinity College Dublin.

The Da Vinci Code and the Holy Grail

The Da Vinci Code, a best-seller, has gained much attention in recent days. The argument is in the theories medieval legends and traditions woven into a novel post-modern thriller with political overtones.

The novel also makes attacks very serious direct in the Christian faith. Let me emphasize the word "novel" because it is clearly a work of fiction, not fact.

Any student seriously considering this book draws the conclusion that it is pure speculation based on little evidence. readers uninformed however, are seduced by this book and some people even promote it as a truth. It is therefore necessary to correct their mistakes.

The book's plot focuses on the unproven assumption that Jesus married Mary Magdalen and a son who became a part of the monarchy French. This story was abolished by the Roman Catholic Church over the centuries.

The book also argues that the Holy Grail is the chalice that was used at the Last Supper, but the body of Mary Magdalene. I want to emphasize that the Bible does not use the term "Holy Grail "much less define it as the chalice used in the first communion at the Last Supper. Empowerment for the cup was made much later in the legends made in medieval times.

The novel denies the divinity blasphemous (deity) of Christ. Argues that the doctrine of the divinity of Christ did not begin with Christ himself, but was introduced later and Constantine called the council of Nicaea in 325 AD to apply.

It is also stated in the Da Vinci Code that Christ was deified in the context of attempt to assert male dominance and suppress worship of the goddess. feminist victimization is a major theme underlying this book is a political subtext. It is called Da Vinci Code, Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519) was supposed to be a believer and propagator of Mary Magdalene as the wife of Jesus rumor.

The New Testament that Jesus openly claimed to be divine. (See John 5:23, 8:58, 10:30.) The Apostles, written under the inspiration of the Spirit Saint also said that Jesus was and is divine. It is equal to God the Father. (See John 1:1,14, Tit 2:13, Hebrews 1:6-8).

Only Jesus as God in the flesh was willing to die for the sins of all people. The leaders of the early church who came after the apostles continued to teach the divinity of Christ. To say or think that other or Constantine invented the doctrine of the divinity of Christ to promote a patriarchal system is as ridiculous as it is anti-historical.

Christ came to die for the sins of all people. He, in his great love and mercy, took upon himself the punishment because all people for our sins. The name "Emmanuel," a title of Christ, means "God with us."

Part of the reason The Da Vinci Code denies the divinity of Christ is based on the Gnostic gospels to strengthen their claims. Many manuscripts have been Gnostic Gospels found in a clay jar at Nag Hammadi in Egypt in 1945.

Among the group of manuscripts of Nag Hammadi was the so-called Gospel of Thomas and the so-called Gospel of Philip. Since these manuscripts are dated between 150 AD until the third or regarding fourth centuries AD, no researcher, not even the most liberal as well have been written by Philip Thomas and the New Testament.

Dr. Erwin Lutzer of Moody Church in Chicago, Illinois wrote on the Gnostic gospels: "The Gnostic Gospels are not historical, and even anti-historical, which contains no narration and little did no sense of chronology. Despise the belief that God had come in the flesh. . . These documents are not intended to have duplicated the canonical Gospels. They are full of quotations from the New Testament, many maimed and many idiots who put words into the mouth of Jesus "(page 9 of the brochure by Dr. Lutzer rumors about Jesus: Jesus of The Da Vinci Code).

Sandra Miesel, Catholic wrote in the newsletter says the crisis in the Da Vinci Code "The Blasphemy is delivered in a soft voice. "

The declaration that Jesus married Mary Magdalene is wild speculation, unsupported support the biblical support and ironically very little even in the medieval legend and tradition. Those who deny the divinity of Christ commit the sin of blasphemy and separated from Christ. I pray that people do not be fooled by "The Da Vinci Code.
