Praise for previous volumes in the Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible"[In Jonah, Phillip] Cary writes with an energy and clarity rarely found in biblical commentaries of any type. . . . Cary works his way through the text phrase by phrase, with an eye for allusions and intertextual echoes; these often fund his theological reflections. He, appropriately in my opinion, blurs the distinction between interpretation and theology. . . . If . . . you want a sustained theological theme played out over the course of interpreting a text, then this volume will both edify and repay repeated reading."–Stephen Fowl, Catholic Biblical Quarterly"Phillip Cary’s commentary on the book of Jonah combines profound exegesis with original insights that could serve both the biblical scholar and the layperson. . . . Cary does end on a hopeful note in helping us rediscover that Christians and Jews can rejoice in the graces that they have both received from God. It is a hermeneutical conclusion that brings to an end this thought-provoking commentary. . . . A fine contribution to the field of exegesis on the book of Jonah. Phillip Cary does not simply repeat what others have written. He opens the way to some new possibilities in the interpretation of the book of Jonah for Christians today."–Jacek Stefanski, Review of Biblical Literature"One of the great strengths of Ephraim Radner’s Leviticus commentary is his commitment to giving unrelenting attention to the materiality of the text, its reasonings, and the way of life it exhibits–all of which make it possible for Christians better to see how Jesus might be seen as performing the logic and reasoning of the Levitical text itself."–Jacob Goodson, Modern Theology

101 Answers to the Most Asked Questions About the End Times

101 Answers to the Most Asked Questions About the End Times

$0.25

For many believers, the subject of the End Times stirs confusion, apprehension, and dread. No longer! This user-friendly manual answers 101 of the most frequently asked questions about everything from the Pre-Tribulation Rapture, the Antichrist, and Tribulation to the Second Coming and the Millennium. Prophecy expert Mark Hitchcock offers a biblically authoritative resource for understanding God’s plan and a reason for peace instead of anxiety about each believer’s role in it.‘The End Is Near!’ Or is it? The Antichrist is alive and well today! Or is he? The church is about to be raptured and will certainly escape the tribulation…. right? When it comes to the End Times, there’s so much confusion. Preachers with elaborate charts share their theories about Revelation and other prophetic books of the Bible. “Ah, Babylon stands for the United States ,” they say. But then other teachers share their theories: “No, Babylon stands for the Roman Catholic Church, or the European Union, or the literal Babylon rebuilt in Iraq ….” Would somebody please shoot straight with me? Finally, someone has. Gifted scholar and pastor Mark Hitchcock walks you gently through Bible prophecy in an engaging, user-friendly style. Hitchcock’s careful examination of the topic will leave you feeling informed and balanced in your understanding of events to come…in our time?

The alphabetically-arranged articles often criticize the Roman Catholic Church and other institutions. The first edition, released in June of 1764, went by the name of Dictionnaire Philosphique Portatif. It was 344 pages and consisted of 73 articles. Later versions were expanded into two volumes consisting of 120 articles. The first editions were published anonymously in Geneva by Gabriel Grasset. Due to the volatile content of the Dictionnaire, Voltaire chose Grasset over his usual publisher to ensure his own anonymity. The Dictionnaire was a lifelong project for Voltaire. It represents the culmination of his views on Christianity, God, morality, and other subjects. The Enlightenment saw the creation of a new way of structuring information in books. The first work to employ this method was the Dictionnaire Historique et Critique (1697) by Pierre Bayle, in which the information is ordered in alphabetical order. Other important works using a similar structure followed, such as the Encyclopedie by Diderot and DAlembert. Having witnessed first hand the popularity and many advantages of this form, Voltaire used this information while preparing the Philosophical Dictionary in 1752, although it wasn’t completed until 1764. Having had the opportunity to write his Dictionary at a later point in time, Voltaire saw that there were certain problems with previous dictionaries, chiefly that they

73 Reasons to Reject Sola Scriptura – The Easy Button Bible – LIST PRICE REDUCED from $14.95 – You SAVE 55%

$6.95

73 Reasons to reject Sola Scriptura – The Easy Button Bible, contains a section for each of the 73 Books found in the Catholic Bible, but the Scripture itself will be missing. In its place will be 73 arguments against the concept of Sola Scriptura (the Bible Alone) which is the Protestant belief that the Bible is the “sole rule of authority” with only 66 Books in the Bible. There is no “Easy Button” on the Bible that activates the voice of the Holy Spirit so we can understand Scripture free of division. Sola Scriptura is not Biblical, and it is a misguided concept that divides the Kingdom of God creating the doctrines of men condemned by the Apostle Paul. Anyone who lives by it has been deceived.Look about and see whether or not the world of Protestantism is fractured in belief since the days of the Reformation. Tens of thousands of legally registered Protestant denominations now bicker and differ with each other over the Bible. It is impossible that Sola Scriptura which gives birth to such division represents the Church established by Jesus Christ.Until Sola Scriptura is abandoned as a rule of faith, unity will never be achieved.

William Tyndale (sometimes spelled Tindall or Tyndall; pronounced /ˈtɪndəl/) (c. 1494 – 1536) was a 16th-century Protestant reformer and scholar who, influenced by the work of Desiderius Erasmus and Martin Luther, translated considerable parts of the Bible into the Early Modern English of his day. While a number of partial and complete Old English translations had been made from the seventh century onward, and Middle English translations particularly during the 14th century, Tyndale’s was the first English translation to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, and the first to take advantage of the new medium of print, which allowed for its wide distribution. In 1535, Tyndale was arrested, jailed in the castle of Vilvoorde outside Brussels for over a year, tried for heresy and burned at the stake. He was strangled before his body was burnt by some people who associated themselves with the Roman Catholic Church.Much of Tyndale’s work eventually found its way into the King James Version (or “Authorised Version”) of the Bible, published in 1611, which, as the work of 54 independent scholars revising the existing English versions, drew significantly on Tyndale’s translations. The King James Version New Testament is 83.7 per cent Tyndale’s work, with the KJV Old Testament 75.7 per cent Tyndale’s.Whereas John Wycliffe had earlier produced an English translation of the Bible from Latin, Tyndale was the first to translate from the original Greek language. This was only made possible after Erasmus made the Greek New Testament available in Europe.

The outcome was Protestantism with its cardinal dogma—Justification by Faith. Protestant Theology. Protestant Theology is based on three principles: 1. The Material Principle—textit{Justification by Faith. This is in antithesis to the Catholic doctrine of meritorious “works.” Salvation is through grace by faith. Faith is the true approach to God. It is all that is required. The moral life flows therefrom as the stream from its source. It is a matter of religious experience. It is the sense of sonship, of inner and immediate relation to God. textit{2. The Formal Principle—the textit{Authority of the Holy Scriptures. The Roman Church held to a manifold literature—Scripture, the Fathers, creeds, lives of saints—all of which were traditionally authoritative. The Reformers limited the authority to the Holy Scriptures. “The Bible, and the Bible only, is the religion of Protestants.” 3. The Social Principle—textit{The Universal Priesthood of all Believers. This is placed over against the claims of the hierarchy. There is to be no mediation. Each conscience is free before God. Thus, Protestantism was a return to the Christian Principle effected by a new religious experience in use of the Holy Scriptures. It developed in three periods: 1. The First Generation. This was the Reformation proper. It embraced Luther, Melanchton, Zwingli, in their earlier lives. This early ground was receded from because of the extremes of the Anabaptists. The Reformers really joined the Catholics in a common opposition to this false subjectivism. They fell back on the Greek dogmas. These are the first articles of their creeds. Here Zwingli remained firmest on the original ground. This period was marked by but one principle—the Material, Justification by

The Book of Jonah, although a work of only two pages long, has made an extraordinary impact on the history of Jewish, Catholic, and Islamic spirituality. As the author demonstrates in this compact and readable book, the Book of Jonah emerges as perhaps the most profoundly Christian of all the books in the Hebrew Bible, and the book that speaks with the most telling resonance for our own age. The Book’s message is a serious and compelling one.

People Still Make a Claim That Catholics Worship Statues

Christ is the “image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation” (Col 1:15). God, who could not be imaged in the Old Testament, has given us a human image of the divine being. Image as a method of focusing his prayer to God, as a method of showing respect through pious bodily action.

Deut. 4:15 – from this verse, Protestants say that since we saw “no form” of the Lord, we should not make graven images of Him.

Deut. 4:16 – of course, in early history Israel was forbidden to make images of God because God didn’t yet reveal himself visibly “in the form of any figure.”

Deut. 4:17-19 – hence, had the Israelites depicted God not yet revealed, they might be tempted to worship Him in the form of a beast, bird, reptile or fish, which was a common error of the times.

Exodus 3:2-3; Dan 7:9; Matt. 3:16; Mark 1:10; Luke 3:22; John 1:32; Acts 2:3- later on, however, we see that God did reveal himself in visible form (as a dove, fire, etc).

Deut. 5:8 – God’s commandment “thou shall not make a graven image” is entirely connected to the worship of false gods. God does not prohibit images to be used in worship, but He prohibits the images themselves to be worshiped.

Exodus 25:18-22; 26:1,31 – for example, God commands the making of the image of a golden cherubim. This heavenly image, of course, is not worshiped by the Israelites. Instead, the image disposes their minds to the supernatural and draws them to God.

Num. 21:8-9 – God also commands the making of the bronze serpent. The image of the bronze serpent is not an idol to be worshiped, but an article that lifts the mind to the supernatural.

I Kings 6:23-36; 7:27-39; 8:6-67 – Solomon’s temple contains statues of cherubim and images of cherubim, oxen and lions. God did not condemn these images that were used in worship.

2 Kings 18:4 – it was only when the people began to worship the statue did they incur God’s wrath, and the king destroyed it. The command prohibiting the use of graven images deals exclusively with the false worship of those images.

1 Chron. 28:18-19 – David gives Solomon the plan for the altar made of refined gold with a golden cherubim images. These images were used in the Jews’ most solemn place of worship.

2 Chron. 3:7-14 – the house was lined with gold with elaborate cherubim carved in wood and overlaid with gold.

Ezek. 41:15 – Ezekiel describes graven images in the temple consisting of carved likenesses of cherubim. These are similar to the images of the angels and saints in many Catholic churches.

Col. 1:15 – the only image of God that Catholics worship is Jesus Christ, who is the “image” (Greek “eikon”) of the invisible God.

David gave Solomon the plan “for the altar of incense made of refined gold, and its weight; also his plan for the golden chariot of the cherubim that spread their wings and covered the ark of the covenant of the Lord. All this he made clear by the writing of the hand of the Lord concerning it all, all the work to be done according to the plan” (1 Chr. 28:18–19). David’s plan for the temple, which the biblical author tells us was “by the writing of the hand of the Lord concerning it all,” included statues of angels.

During a plague of serpents sent to punish the Israelites during the exodus, God told Moses to “make [a statue of] a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and every one who is bitten, when he sees it shall live. So Moses made a bronze serpent, and set it on a pole; and if a serpent bit any man, he would look at the bronze serpent and live” (Num. 21:8–9).

One had to look at the bronze statue of the serpent to be healed, which shows that statues could be used ritually, not merely as religious decorations.

Catholics use statues, paintings, and other artistic devices to recall the person or thing depicted. Just as it helps to remember one’s mother by looking at her photograph, so it helps to recall the example of the saints by looking at pictures of them. Catholics also use statues as teaching tools. In the early Church they were especially useful for the instruction of the illiterate. Many Protestants have pictures of Jesus and other Bible pictures in Sunday school for teaching children. Catholics also use statues to commemorate certain people and events, much as Protestant churches have three-dimensional nativity scenes at Christmas.

If one measured Protestants by the same rule, then by using these “graven” images, they would be practicing the “idolatry” of which they accuse Catholics. But there’s no idolatry going on in these situations. God forbids the worship of images as gods, but he doesn’t ban the making of images. If he had, religious movies, videos, photographs, paintings, and all similar things would be banned. But, as the case of the bronze serpent shows, God does not even forbid the ritual use of religious images.

It is when people begin to adore a statue as a god that the Lord becomes angry. Thus when people did start to worship the bronze serpent as a snake-god (whom they named “Nehushtan”), the righteous king Hezekiah had it destroyed (2 Kgs. 18:4).
