Archbishop Thomas Joseph Toolen was the Bishop of Mobile through some rather turbulent times for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mobile, Alabama. One of the most frequently occurring questions he had to deal with was the question of race. During the early decades of his episcopate, Toolen carried out his mission of saving the souls of Alabama’s African Americans by establishing separate missions, thereby expanding the South’s only truly biracial religion while also respecting societal norms crystallized in the Jim Crow laws of segregation. When the atmosphere was such that it was practical, Toolen acted quietly to integrate all levels of Catholic education which included Spring Hill College in 1954 and the parochial school system in 1964. As the Civil Rights Movement brought turbulence and violence to the State of Alabama, Toolen responded by condemning the activists’ methods, not their goals. This book is great for those who are interested in the Civil Rights Movement in America viewed from a different angle or anyone interested in the American South, the American Catholic Church, or race relations in the United States.

''Go and make disciples of all the nations'': Moravian missionaries in Nicaragua's Atlantic Coast from 1912--1933.

”Go and make disciples of all the nations”: Moravian missionaries in Nicaragua’s Atlantic Coast from 1912–1933.

$49.99

According to Matthew, chapter 28, verse 19 of the Bible, Jesus ordered his disciples to go forth from Galilee to convert the people. A seemingly direct initiative, this instruction would prompt scores of missionaries over the course of the next 2000 years to follow in the footsteps of Jesus the Nazarene, believe in Christianity, and pursue active steps to convert nonbelievers. In 1849, a group of Moravian missionaries had taken this teaching to heart and landed on the Eastern Coast of Nicaragua. Armed with faith and a plan, these devout Christians and their successors would spend the next 125 years in communion with the native peoples.;The period of 1912-1933 was one of constant struggle for the Moravian missionaries in Nicaragua’s Miskitu Coast. They were waging a two front melee with the American Marines and businessmen on one side and the Roman Catholic Church on the other. In 1912, the U.S. Marine Corps entered Nicaragua. Sent in to restore stability to the region, their goals satisfied the needs of wealthy shareholders and Washington bureaucrats. In place non-consecutively until 1933, the Marines brought modernism to the coast, which upset Moravian teachings of simplicity. Meanwhile, the Roman Catholic Church experienced a wave of interest in integrating the coast into the traditional religion, prevalent across the majority of the country. Whether an actual campaign to convert the coast existed is not of concern here; of interest is simply that the Moravians perceived it to be so. They honestly believed that “Rome” was attempting to take their communities. So, they fervently fought back through strengthening their convictions and working harder. Besieged by forces out of their control, they turned their attentions toward converting the native populations, particularly the Miskitu, to Christianity and reduce or eliminate all remnants of aboriginal spiritual practices. During the course of their mission, Moravian preachers influenced native beliefs. However, in

”We are all as one fish in the sea…”. Catholicism in Protestant Pennsylvania: 1730–1790.

$49.99

This work is a study of colonial Catholicism in eastern Pennsylvania. Although Catholicism was one of the major religions of the European world, few have studied its first transitions to America. Pennsylvania Quakers in the Philadelphia area created a society and government modeled on Great Britain and British law but with a difference: religious tolerance for other Christian sects. They allowed and encouraged the unfettered immigration of a diverse European Christian population, mostly Protestant but including hated Catholics. This fundamentalist and rigid Christian Church arrived with English and German Jesuits. These priests as leaders took up a non-threatening political stance early in the 18th century. Pennsylvania was the only colony that allowed them entrance. The Quakers started a new ethnically diverse and religiously tolerant province where religions competed for members. Catholics could safely grow and prosper.;Even though social and political events in Protestant Pennsylvania brought attempts to eject the priests at points, such as at the start of the French and Indian War, the government failed to respond to the supposed civic Catholic threat that was articulated by many of the Protestant clergy. Catholics were positive members of the colony and assisted colonial authorities whenever possible. The Catholic population made a positive cultural impact, participating in a broad array of educational, financial, military, and civic associations. In early manufacturing enterprises, mercantile operations, and technical or scientific innovations, Catholics became a substantial economic force. As many prospered, they built churches and schools for their congregations.;As the Revolutionary War approached, Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia region anchored the rebellion of the American colonies. Its geographical location and its colonial humanistic policies including religious toleration, offered physical protection, ideological neutrality and tactical centrality

Praise for 10 Books Every Conservative Must Read“Because of too much TV and too little decent schooling, too many Americans are unread in the classics that have defined our culture. That’s why Wiker’s 10 Books Every Conservative Must Read is so important: it provides a shopping list for those who want to understand what makes America and the West exceptional.”—Brett M. Decker, Editorial Page Editor, Washington Times“Benjamin Wiker illuminates some of the great books of our civilization with an insightful simplicity that is not only breathtaking but potentially life changing.”—Joseph Pearce, author of biographies of Chesterton, Belloc, C. S. Lewis, and J. R. R. TolkienPraise for 10 Books That Screwed Up the World“Benjamin Wiker has read the worst books in Western Civilization so you don’t have to. Professor Wiker’s poison pen portraits are great critical aids to analyzing some of the worst ideas that have ever contaminated Western Civilization. Professor Wiker recommends actually reading the books—but his own book is a whole lot more fun.”—Thomas E. Woods, Jr., Ph.D., author of How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization“If you want to know where Western civilization ran off the rails, read this book. And if you want to help get us back on track, buy extra copies and see what you can do to get them into doctor’s office waiting rooms, faculty lounges, and your local public library. Wiker has the goods on the authors of our current confusion about (among other things) human nature, morality, sex, economics, law, and government—this book will open many eyes.”—Elizabeth Kantor, Ph.D., Editor of the Conservative Book Club and author of The Politically Incorrect Guide™ to English and American Literature

Excerpt: The Maryland Toleration Act, also known as the Act Concerning Religion, was a law mandating religious tolerance for trinitarian Christians. Passed on September 21, 1649 by the assembly of the Maryland colony, it was the first law requiring religious tolerance in the British North American colonies and created the first legal limitations on hate speech in the world. Historians argue that it helped inspire later legal protections for freedom of religion in the United States. The Calvert family, who founded Maryland partly as a refuge for English Catholics, sought enactment of the law to protect Catholic settlers and those of other religions that did not conform to the dominant Anglicanism of Britain and her colonies. The Act allowed freedom of worship for all trinitarian Christians in Maryland, but sentenced to death anyone who denied the divinity of Jesus. It was revoked in 1654 by William Claiborne, a Virginian who had been appointed as a commissioner by Oliver Cromwell and was a staunch advocate for the Anglican Church. When the Calverts regained control of Maryland, the Act was reinstated, before being repealed permanently in 1692 following the Glorious Revolution. As the first law on religious tolerance in the British North America, it influenced related laws in other colonies and portions of it were echoed in the writing of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which enshrined religious freedom in American law. Cecilius Calvert, proprietor of the Maryland colony when the Maryland Toleration Act was passedThe Maryland colony was founded by Cecilius Calvert in 1634. Like his father George Calvert, who had originated the efforts that led to the colony’s charter, Cecilius Calvert was Catholic at a time when England was dominat… More:

Excerpt: The Philadelphia Nativist Riots (also known as the Philadelphia Prayer Riots, the Bible Riots and the Native American Riots) were a series of riots that took place between May 6 and 8 and July 6 and 7, 1844, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States and the adjacent districts of Kensington and Southwark. The riots were a result of rising anti-Catholic sentiment at the growing population of Irish Catholic immigrants. In the months prior to the riots, nativist groups had been spreading a rumor that Catholics were trying to remove the Bible from public schools. A nativist rally in Kensington erupted in violence on May 6 and started a deadly riot that would result in destruction of two Catholic churches and numerous other buildings. Riots erupted again in July after it was discovered that St. Philip Neri’s Catholic Church in Southwark had armed itself for protection. Fierce fighting broke out between the nativists and the soldiers sent to protect the church, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries. Grand juries investigating the riots found that fault lay mainly with the Irish Catholic population. However, nationally the riots helped fuel criticism of the nativist movement despite denials from nativist groups of responsibility. The riots made the deficiencies in law enforcement in Philadelphia and the surrounding districts readily apparent, influencing various reforms in local police departments and the eventual consolidation of the city in 1854. Bishop Francis Kenrick. As Philadelphia became industrialized, immigrants from England, Ireland, and Germany settled in the city and the surrounding districts. Once it began, the potato famine increased immigration from Ireland, although this largely occurred after the Philadelphia riots. In the area… More:

1960-LBJ vs. JFK vs. Nixon: The Epic Campaign That Forged Three Presidencies

$11.99

It was the election that would ultimately give America “Camelot” and its tragic aftermath, a momentous contest when three giants who each would have a chance to shape the nation battled to win the presidency.Award-winning author David Pietrusza does here for the 1960 presidential race what he did in his previous book, 1920: the Year of the Six Presidents—which Kirkus Reviews selected as one of their Best Books of 2007. Until now, the most authoritative study of the 1960 election was Theodore White’s Pulitzer Prize-winning The Making of the President, 1960. But White, as a trusted insider, didn’t tell all. Here’s the rest of the story, what White could never have known, nor revealed. Finally, it’s all out—including JFK’s poignant comment on why LBJ’s nomination as vice president would be inconsequential: “I’m 43 years old. I’m not going to die in office.”Combining an engaging narrative with exhaustive research, Pietrusza chronicles the pivotal election of 1960, in which issues of civil rights and religion (Kennedy was only the second major-party Roman Catholic candidate ever) converged. The volatile primary clash between Senate Majority leader LBJ and the young JFK culminated in an improbable fusion ticket. The historic, legendary Kennedy-Nixon debates followed in its wake. The first presidential televised debates, they forever altered American politics when an exhausted Nixon was unkempt and tentative in their first showdown. With 80 million viewers passing judgment, Nixon’s poll numbers dropped as the charismatic Kennedy’s star rose. Nixon learned his lesson—resting before subsequent debates, reluctantly wearing makeup, and challenging JFK with a more aggressive stance—but the damage was done. There’s no one better to convey the drama of that tumultuous year than Pietrusza. Excerpt: The Chilean Civil War of 1829 (Spanish : Guerra Civil de 1829 ) was an armed conflict between conservative and liberal forces in Chile over the constitutional regime in force. This conflict ended with the defeat of the liberal forces and the approval of a new constitution in 1833, that was in force until 1925.Background The resignation and self-exile of General Bernardo O’Higgins in 1823 did not put an end to the political infighting. Civil conflict continued, focusing mainly on the issues of anticlericalism and regionalism. Presidents and constitutions rose and fell quickly in the 1820s. The Chilean political scene divided itself into two groups that were already embrionary during the independence days. The followers of O’Higgins became the Conservatives or Bigwigs (Spanish : Pelucones ). This group was mainly composed by the remains of the colonial aristocracy, and defended the ideas of a strong central government, respect of tradition and a strong support for the Catholic Church. Their most prominent leaders where José Gregorio Argomedo, Juan Egaña and José Joaquín Prieto . Opposed to them were the Liberals or Pipiolos . Catechism Gives Blueprint To Catholics

The word catechism as a variety of meanings however the most accepted one comes from Greek and means to Echo. In this application it is a way to echo or repeat the tenants of the Catholic Church. Prior to the invention of the printing press in the 1400s , the beliefs and tradition of the church were handed down verbally. They asked people to repeat them over and over until they were learned, like an echo. Even in the time of Jesus the teacher taught scriptures by asking again and again for them to be repeated, until they were learned. This was a common way of teaching even before the time of Jesus. But this again invoked the Echo theme.

After the invention of the printing press, it changed the way things could be taught. The beliefs were written down and there was many question and answer books to help with the catechesis process. In the 15th century the influential catechisms of St/ Peter and St. Rober Bellarmine became the mainstay of the catechesis process.

But it wasn’t until the 90s that Vatican II framer, Pope John Paul II recognized something that many overlooked. The young post Vatican II Catholic was severely under catechized and with that in Oct of 1992, he published an apostolic constitution the Deposit of Faith which announced the need for a Catechism of the Catholic Church. The date of his release coincided with the 30th anniversary of the Vatican II. The Catechism of the The Catholic Church goal was to fill in all the missing information that most Catholics no longer know by rote memory. It gave a way for every Catholic Family to have a desktop reference for any question their children may ask or any friend of another faith. Many of these persons of other faith still attempt to challenge us and now with the Catechism, any Catholic is armed in answer those questions.

As many look back since Vatican II there is an paradigm shift in the church that moved from self to community. Then Cardinal Karol Wojtyla, who later became known as Pope John Paul II, in the writing of the Vatican II documents said that to help yourself you had to help others and outlined a framework that spoke of the acts of helping others would help one’s self. The other shifts in the church though are what allowed the Pope to say we need a Catechism written that would allow Catholics a reference of their faith. He saw the Catechism as a reference of Catholic Doctrine, which was something that was lacking.

In tandem, the US bishops also set to work writing a comprehensive version for the United States Catholics. The format is dramatically different although the message is the same. In June of 2000 they under took the task of creating a Catechism that is uniquely American. This book was to address the local situation and culture but preserved the unity and fidelity of the faith in its teaching found in Pope John Paul II’s catechism and gave a more readable book format of the desktop reference out of the Vatican.
